There is more music available then at any other time in history. Amazing stuff out there you just have to look for it as its not delivered to you on the radio.
"back in the day" getting a record label was the goal and there were high barriers to entry.
Now you have the tools on your iphone to make an album and get it on spotify to make it available to the world.

can captivate an audience without any bells and whistles. Mark Knopfler plays the geetar so effortlessly, it is second nature to him at this point in his life.
Other oldies like James Taylor, or Neil Young, can take an acoustic guitar and make an audience forget about the outside world. I haven't seen much in the current crop of "artists" that will take their place. Maybe Chris Stapleton, but that's about it.

Neil Young.
I may not agree with Neil Young's politics, but the man churned out songs like most people breathed. Nobody ever made better use of a coked up nasal wail.

relatively young and new artists if you haven't:
Billy Strings - IBMA Entertainer of the Year (Dust in a Baggie, cover of Black Sabbath's War Pigs at the Orange Peel in Asheville)
Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway - Molly IBMA guitar player of the year, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes IBMA fiddle player of the year (Dooley's Farm, cover of Starship's White Rabbit, Ant's Marching last weekend w/ Dave Mathews)
Sierra Hull - IBMA Mandolin player of the year, voice compared to Alison Krauss
They're all new/progressive bluegrass but play everything. If bored check them out on the youtubes.

couple of his songs and I think wrote some also (Oldest Surfer on the Beach, Whoop-de-doo).
‘It’s time to bid a sad farewell to our friend Jimmy Buffett who passed away last week.
Jimmy and his band were a pleasure to be around and I’m sure they’ll have a mountain of happy memories of their friend and leader.
In the few short years of our friendship I’m proud Jimmy recorded a couple of my songs and glad that he enjoyed playing ‘Oldest Surfer On the Beach’ on his stage shows.
Our condolences go out to Jimmy’s family at this time.’ – MK

My dad used to blast Dire Straits through his McIntosh speakers when I was a kid and this man playing the guitar was some of the first music I remember hearing. Absolute wizard. I have no idea what happened to music. Hip Hop is a cancer IMO. Thanks for sharing, brought back memories.
