The targeting rule is BS.

"Targeting" implies intent. Lowering your shoulder by crouching and bending forward at the waist to make a normal, textbook tackle, can't be done without lowering the head which happens to be attached to the shoulders, and in no way implies or indicates intent. Trying to keep one's head up while performing said tackle is unnatural and puts the tackler's neck in an extremely vulnerable position.

I'm all for player safety, but severly penalizing players and their teams for making normal football tackles with zero intent to hurt another player is total bullshid, and is the wrong solution to the problem.

the hit was literally a targeting by definition. Young players are taught (or should be taught) to lead with their facemask. It's safer for their necks, I've learned. When I saw the replay I knew he was gone and that was actually the right call by the rules.

The only good play in leading with the crown is when the ball is the target. The ball carrier always loses control of the ball when it's hit that hard so the neck is not in danger.

The officiating in the Pitt game was generally subhuman. It was confusing to me. I got over it when Cade broke loose.

But I don’t think I have ever seen targeting called on an offensive player. Running backs seem to lead with the crown of their helmet very often.

Sammy was guilty by rule. Doesn’t mean I like the rule though.
