Ideal path for Clemson to SEC in 2024:

1

Aug 8, 2023, 10:44 AM

We have seen many “small minded” projecting a of the SEC adding just 2 teams, which is possible, but would be a weak step.

Key thoughts:
1) The SEC brand is built on showing dominate athletics and football leadership, and are more likely to take a power move than a small “keep up” move.
2) The ACC needs to be dissolved as a conference to free up an immediate move with Zero media rights liability.
3) There are only about 8 members of the ACC who provide meaningful media rights value.

Potential SEC Plan:
1) Offer a full membership to the 8 ACC schools who can add value: Clemson, FSU, UNC, Miami, NC State, UVA, VT, Duke.

2) Reach an agreement with ESPN to take over the full annual value of the defunct ACC deal, but spread over 8 schools rather than 14, plus a contract sweetener to expand to add at least 1 extra conference game and possibly a pre-season spring game (+5-10 mil annual per school).
- The 8 added ACC schools will pay for themselves and SEC keeps the same or higher payout per school.
- SEC maintains a travel budget 75% cheaper than the BIG and therefore pockets more $ per school.

3) 10 ACC members need to vote to end the conference. GA Tech and at least one more will make that choice with deals from the BIG to help expand BIG TV market.

I like it, but with one or two exceptions...

1. I don't think GT does anything for the B1G value wise. It's about eyeballs, not markets. B1G would have zero interest in a standalone GT.

2. I really believe the B1G is coming South. Fox has the resources, and they want in. Who will it be? FSU/Clem/UNC/Miami?? I don't know. I think whatever deal ESPN/SEC tries to do has to be with the knowledge the B1G is going to get someone. If you are the SEC, you just can't let it be your two biggest brands.

The biggest issue reaming GOR

I agree that GA Tech is not appealing alone, but if the SEC makes a lower play, it will be the BIG’s turn to play catch up and grab any south east market share they can - even if the offer GA Tech a reduced rate membership.

I can’t see the SEC or BIG allowing the other to take FSU, Clemson, UNC, UVA for example while the other picks up a much weaker return with NC State, Miami, Duke, VT for the same $ value.

They would need to both take 4-5 teams at the same time to break the ACC with 100% certainty.
Do you think they would ever find an agreeable split between the two conferences?

I think the split will be between 4 schools.. not everyone

FSU
Clemson
Miami
UNC

Those 4 get split 2 and 2, and both conferences stand pat. The remaining "bigger name schools" like NCST/VT/UL can either look to the B12, or stay in a revamped ACC.

I don't know how it will work out, but that is how I am guessing it gets split. I could make an argument for the B1G and SEC taking any of those 4 schools.

I agree on the four but the SEC would be taking Miami and UNC on speculation that at some point they wouldn't be a drag at a competitive level. That said I think they'd love to switch Vandy and Miss St. with those two programs.

Behind FSU and Clemson, I think those 2 bring the most

eyeballs across all sports... I would love for the SEC to take Clem/FSU, and they may. But I just don't know if I see the value they bring to the SEC compared to what they would bring the B1G.

I see two ways Clem/FSU bring value to the SEC.

1. Allows the conference to go to 9 conference games, which would be huge revenue wise.

2. Blocks B1G from those brands and keeps FOX at bay. It may be worth it to ESPN just for that.
