after 3 months trying to find someone who could get to us in less than 6 months. Had to fire the first guy who started working but was not competent to allow him to continue. He has made progress but the big problem is .... we have three decks - hope we are done by football season!

Decks are relatively simple. What was the first guy not able to do properly? I’m just curious

First guy had trouble even putting screws in straight- would miss the 2nd board he was attaching the1st one to. What really got me was when I asked why he wasn’t writing measurements down to order materials , he told me he had them”in his head” and then failed to order the correct number of boards the correct sizes . He even cut several full length boards to get small pieces when already cut boards could have been used

It took me 2 years to find someone to tear down the old deck and add a screened porch. If I had not watched everyday they were going to take every shortcut and cheap way out known to man. A 4 to 6 week job (including the screened porch) started late May snd finally ended late September. Needless to say, I used my 10% contingency for materials or it never would have been finished.

I get it, years ago I had a deck and sunroom project going and would come home at lunch to check on progress. I found a couple guys sleeping in my yard one day when I came home early. There were quality issues too like using MDF outside and arguments about it. About that time the contractor’s son ran over a neighborhood kid who was on a go kart. The kid had to be airlifted out and eventually lost his leg.
The contractor quit arguing and disappeared after that. I think he was just trying to keep his son out of trouble. I wound up learning a lot about construction after experience and do most things myself or closely vet contractors and babysitting them. If you have to do that you may as well do it yourself.
The son was also a hot head with a drinking problem and wound up beating a guy badly a few months later in a bar and went to prison. It kinda shows that you need to be careful who is working at your house.

Ever since the government shut the country down during Covid, it's been very tough to get anyone to do anything.

I have rebuilt several decks, porches, and turned screen porches into sun rooms. I am a DIY guy, so I am not a pro. Rebuilding is a whole lot easier from doing it if you have to start from nothing. Working with wood is a lot easier than working with metal. I completely remodeled a 3500 Sq ft. House and replaced every thing in it seen by the eye. Just buy the tools needed and take your time. I did cut off half my thumb and tried to cut off some fingers, but otherwise I did a better job than paying these half azzzed remodlers. And I lived far off the beaten path, so it was not easy getting anyone to do it, so I did it myself. Tore down walls, built new walls, hung sheet rock, laid 3000 feet of oak flooring. If I can do it, anyone can do it.

Amen brother. I’m currently about 80% done with my house which is about the same square footage. I hate giving someone money for something I can do myself. Now days if you don’t know how to do something just watch a few YouTube videos and read up and you’ll learn how to do it. I just believe we are all capable of doing more than we realize.

That’s where I got to in this house. I still have all my digits. 😂
I just do it myself as time allows. I did a lot a few years ago and now I’ve slowed down

Extremely hard to find true craftsmen anymore. Took me a year and a half to find someone to do work for me. Had 3 different projects to do and finally found 3 different individuals for each project in a row. Each one did what they said they would, showed up on time and stuck to their estimate. But still had to oversee each project for daily inspection.
Still material cost and labor cost is unreal. I tend to blame this on influx of not true southerners moving in and not caring what it cost to pay for something.
It's truly a different world now and the one we once knew will never be again.

Agree. If you hire someone to do work for you, you better watch them like a hawk and don't be shy about calling them out regarding inferior work and making them redo or or fire them. Once they finish and leave your job, you will never see them again. Take pictures of inferior work, as you may end up in a law suit with them. Either filed by you or them. Also, video any conversation in which you have with them in which you are calling attention to wanting work done correctly.

Grab you a hammer and saw and get after it. You need a little common sense and some want to. YouTube might help. The hardest part is getting started.

I needed our yard fenced in, the screen porch enlarged into a sunroom and a large deck built. After meeting with so called contractors, I hired my handyman nephew and we are doing the work. I can tell you as a retired contractor that cost have doubled over the last few years, even doing a lot of the work myself.

I’m a licensed general contractor. Material and labor have doubled since Covid. With that being said, the old adage rings truer now than anytime in the last 3 decades I’ve been in construction: You get what you pay for.

You did not get sucked in by the Anderson window scam did you? They charge 1500 to 2000 for a window that costs 200 dollars. 3000 for as entry door that costs 600 dollars. I don’t see how they can live with themselves.

Clover - I can come tell you what to do. But, I prolly won't be there before 10am and would need to be on the road by 2pm. Did I mention my lunch break? A man's gotta eat.

If you trim the bushes around your deck, it will make your deck look bigger.

A few years ago, I finally got a guy out here to repair and repaint my deck. He got about halfway done and said it was going to be more money. I told him to get lost. I’ve been doing all my own carpentry work ever since.
