the track coach for that year (who according to rumor was selected by having lost a poker game) would give one of the Seniors or captain who had a car a small wad of cash for the trip.
The team would then drive themselves. Costs were kept to a minimum because they could pocket any leftover money, so sometimes they just ate candy bars.

So all of this is dependent on how good an athlete is. If she is world class, full scholly, if she isn't it goes down really depending on times, what meets they've done, etc. The lowest that I have heard of is free housing and meals. No real tuition reduction but still nothing to ignore.
So, somewhere in-between
