and the position that will ultimately cost us a game or two this season will be WR. Realistically, losing Peake was a huge blow to a thin and inexperienced WR corp. Man I hope I'm wrong, but my gut is telling me if Sammy is taken out of the game, we could be in deep trouble at some point this season.

Regardless of whether those guys come through or not, losing Sammy Watkins without someone performing like Nuk '12 will be a huge blow. For the record, you don't see many performances like that from seniors, much less underclassmen.
BTW, saying that we are thin at receiver and citing what happens if Sammy goes down is about like saying that we are thin at quarterback and citing what happens if Tajh goes down. IMO, QB is just a little thinner than WR.

the ball be thrown too? Humphries or Peake? I feel for Charone and yes, I think he was going to have a good year. But I honestly like us better with Humphries as a starter. Best downfield blocker we have at WR, and clutch in those tight space situations. We'll build our depth over the next 4 weeks, but as a starting unit, this is the best one we put on the field IMO

Dood, you gotta stop reading the press and watching ESPiN. Take another look at the guys that Cole was throwing to in our last game. Every back, TE and WR has hands and knows the playbook.
Our only problem with our WR corp is their lack of desire to block downfield.

oh i thought we were going to talk about sausage. Yeah I agree we have no talent at WR and we surely don't have a good enough QB to put the ball in their chest.

its not like he was a star player. Many wondered over his first few years whether he would ever develop into the type of player everyone hoped he could be. Last year Clemson won 11 games with one really good wr and the rest of the guys had average seasons. Same thing this year. There is one really good wr and there are a bunch of other ones that are kind of unknowns but have the potential to be good contributors. Clemson will be fine at WR. Just watch.

Then what you're implying is Charone Peake was/is the key to our season? I'm not buying that.

I really don't like the thought of losing Blanks, but if we're saying that our depth looks bad IF we lose a heisman candidate, then I'd say that our QB depth looks worse than WR depth. We can survive losing Sammy more than losing Tajh.

Peake was unquestionably our 2nd best WR in my opinion. I think Humphries is solid, but another injury and we'll be real, real thin.

We play 3 or 4 at a time, usually 3.
Sep 18, 2013, 10:44 AM
|
|
We have 3 that are potentially all-conference quality and another 2 who are national recruits, one of which is already proven in Hopper.
We now have 4 TE/FB's that can rotate to take heat of the WR corps as well.
If you look at our other positions, we have several with less quality depth.

I'm not saying that we're dangerously thin at WR, but you are overstating what we have. "potentially all-conference quality" describes Sammy and Humphries, although Sammy is more of a slam dunk for all conference and potential All American. Bryant has the most work to do, but "potential" is a very broad word.
Hopper had one good game against SC State. I'm a fan, but he is not proven by any stretch of the word. About the 2 national recruits, Willaims fits that description with offers from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Notre Dame, etc., but TJ Green does not unless you consider offers from California, Cincinnati, Kentucky, Southern Miss, UAB, and Western Kentucky national. Again, I really like his potential, but at this point, it is only potential. Personally, I would like to see him redshirt.

Is not in our receivers. I'm just looking at Bryant, Humphries, Sekinger, Hopper, McDowell, and many other stars not seen bc of our bigger stars... These guys work hard to be clutch. I can't wait to see what Hopper does

I want to see Williams. He might shatter every receiving record we have by the time it is said and done. He is a stud. Would love to see him redshirt though. Hopper will fill in nicely. We have some of the most talented receivers in the country. If the WR is why we falter this season i'll give you $100!

What's with these panic-filled posts about our WRs?
Sep 18, 2013, 11:02 AM
|
|
I've seen several posts since Peake was injured talking about how awful we might be without him. I don't know if all of those posts are from you are not, but this seems like a huge overreaction. Peake is talented and has a lot of potential, for sure. He had a nice start to the season. But to be honest, I think he is probably our third best WR this year. Sammy is better, and Bryant is better too.
As unfortunate as his injury was, there is no reason for panic. We still have outstanding playmakers in Watkins and Bryant. And there is every indication that Humphries and Hopper are ready to step in and contribute in bigger ways than they have been asked to. We also have capable tight ends with good hands.
