My DJ theory

Nov 27, 2022, 7:50 PM

We're all trying to make it make sense. This is what I think. Some combination of the two theories below.

DJ wanted to play baseball and football coming out of high school. Was there a promise or guarantee made for the gridiron if he elected not to pursue baseball? Could Dave or someone else have given Dabo a guilt trip about not wanting him to play baseball and throwing that opportunity away?

Part 2 is during the off-season, there was some conversation about DJ wanting to not play sports anymore. If I recall, he and his mom and Dabo had a sit down. Did Dabo promise him a starting role if he came back and stuck it out one more year?

Just hunches based on different things I've read and trying to make it make sense. None of this may be true, but I feel like some of it has to be involved.

There is clearly, very clearly something going on that we don’t know. I wonder if years down the road, when this era of Clemson football is over…whether we go down further and stay 9-10 win team every year or get talent in and rebuild the program…if something will come out about what is going on and why the stubbornness and blindness defy explanation and logic. Its not rocket science or even organic chemistry for crying out loud. These professionals have enough analysts and assistants to have a complete set of limited plays and looks for Klubnik only, should the need arise. They could have 2 complete tempo sets with literally 2 reads each that they could run in and change the whole game with if needed. It’s the most bizarre and disheartening thing in football right now.

enthusiasm Cade might bring to our team. It would be typical for the players to rally if the move was made during the game.

tough personal issues, and Dabo rightly committed to stand by him and help nurture him through it. Then, on top of that DJ was banged up with several nagging injuries that affacted his performance. DJ probably did endure a lot of unjust criticism during that spell, and Dabo had his back, and he and Streeter hitched their wagon to DJ. The more people who did not appreciate or fully understand DJ's situation criticized him, the deeper Dabo dug in. That committment carried over to this year, to the point that Dabo and Streeter now see any failure by DJ as a failure by them. The deeper they are in, and the longer it goes, the harder it is for them to recognize and accept, much less acknowledge and correct. It's one thing to point out the failure of others, but a very different thing to admit your own.

That sounds like professional negligence @ST

So why yank him against Syracuse?

Nov 27, 2022, 8:44 PM [ in reply to I think it's this ... Last year, DJ was battling some very ]

Even ND, if only for the pick by Cade?

If Cade had clearly taken the reins at any point, what in Dabo's history says he wouldn't make the move?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I honestly don't know, and I don't think Cade has to have

Nov 27, 2022, 9:18 PM

"taken the reins" to have gotten in the game yesterday; we just needed a competent back up QB who could execute the offense without screwing up. If Cade can't do that by now, something is wrong. I just know that if a QB ever needed to be yanked, it was DJ yesterday, and I can't buy that Cade is that incompetent. That's why I'm saying the whole thing makes no sense, and I can't get my head around it.

I rarely post but my question after reading hundreds of comments. Coaches knew after last year that DJ was average at best and at worst a liability. So why isn’t Cade ready? He came in Jan, went thru spring, summer and fall. One would think that priority number one would’ve been to have the back-up QB ready to go as DJ’s history clearly demonstrated uncertainty. I don’t understand how/why Cade was/is not ready. By all accounts he’s talented, bright, good leadership potential, etc. He should be ready unless he’s another serious miss in recruiting, which I doubt.

I think he is ready. Dabo does not have control of his "locker room". That became obvious when he let the BLM stickers go on the helmets couple years ago.

There is no position that has to process more

Nov 27, 2022, 9:34 PM [ in reply to Re: So why yank him against Syracuse? ]

than QB, we all know that. I'm in agreement with almost all that is DJ's biggest weakness. I also don't think it's the norm for a true freshman to get there his freshman year. Just like very few rookie QB's explode into the league, most struggle with the speed of the game and all the things they must process. Sane with the jump from HS to college.

DJ and TL are just to true exceptions, we just happened to have them 6vout of 7 years and think that's the way it is for everyone. It isn't

That’s not true , in fact i’m the last decade atleast freshmen QBs are more successful and typcially run college football.

Did you mean Watson and Lawrence instead of DJ and Lawrence were exceptions to the rule?

Cade is ready and a better QB than DJ. And he is as advertised. But Dabo in no way is going to have a repeat of the 2017 fiasco of benching Kelly Bryant. Being accused of racism and talks on sports programs of the motive being racist because we are in the "deep south" where that kind of stuff is still in going on you know. "Sarcasm".

It's as if Dabo is like a gun shy hunting dog. Or "once bitten, twice shy" as the saying goes. Dabo was really hurt by those allegations.

He is not going to bench a person of color (although Samoan, not African American) for a white guy. At least not in such a popular position as quarter back. The most important position on the team that gets the most media attention.

I hope this helps everyone to understand this seemingly insane situation we have been going through for 2 years.

Plausible

and then throw Cade in the game where he can't be successful to keep the plan going. They almost let the cat out the bag against Tech.

I know The coaches didn't expect Cade to do so good with the second and third string. He even completed a pass to Drew Swinney.

Any chance we can see DJ's NIL contracts? I'm wondering if maybe he only gets some pay based on playing time, and Dabo gets a cut. This is way more sketchy than what you suggest (though even your situation is unacceptable. It's their job to recognize and accept it. If they can't do it, we should find coaches who can).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Your theory is the most plausible. It’s simple

Re: My DJ theory

I find it strange that DJ sometimes gets overly excited and animated when he gets a first down in some situations, even when the game is far from over. It could be in the second quarter on Clemson’s side of the field and suddenly DJ will erupt in excitement after stumbling to a first down. Pretty sure I saw him punching the air and shouting something (as if to denounce the non-believers) in some of the past few games after some positive plays. You don’t typically see players have these sudden outbursts in these situations except maybe when they score a TD or make a huge play.

Maybe he’s just trying to amp his teammates up…or maybe he realizes people have noticed his struggles and he feels vindicated when there’s ANY kind of positive play. Either way, you have to wonder what’s going through his head at this point.
