General Generator Question

Please understand, Greenr has lived 40+ years never owning a generator. Greenr has considered it, multiple times, but never bit the bullet (and still may not).
If you have a gas powered generator, not whole house, do you just crank that bish up and let it run 24/7? Do you run power cords into your house to plug in the fridge and hitachi charger?
Let me know what you have and how you have it setup.
I'm not trying to FBCoach this and plug it into my house and pray it doesn't kill everyone, but I might grab one for future use (and then never need it).

four cylinder WWII vintage army generator in a back shed. He pulled that thing out, got it running, and back plugged it into two outlets, and powered our whole house off it for about five days. It was a lifesaver.

who did this round of outages and it seems the consensus is to run it in short bursts to do a fridge freezer cycle every 2 hours and as needed for TV, lights etc.
I got by just fine with a 4 pack of solar camp lanterns, my Colman stove, and the two car jump batteries that I bring in and charge once a month. All stuff I use anyways
Protip - my chest freezer stayed cold like a yeti for 4 days and fortunately I had room to put the stuff from the house fridge freezer in there.

After seeing the cluster at the gas stations, I don’t think having one that requires fuel would be a good long term outage solution.
I have a smallish portable panel for charging electronics whilst camping. Might see if I can get a deal on a larger one and battery during prime days next week.

it.
Irony of most folks with solar panels on the roof, if it’s a grid interconnect system, they don’t have power until the grid comes back up either.
BTW, if the wind takes the solar panels off your roof, your roof is going with them.

Downside is they're expensive AF for the power you get. I've looked into them, but at the end of the day you'd probably need a gas generator to charge the power bank back up. If you got a big enough bank with enough storage capacity you could probably get by, other considerations are the fact that I didn't see the sun at my house for like a week so not sure how well the solar panels would have worked.
In regards to Honda vs. others, noise levels are going to be the biggest difference IMO. I've got a Generac and my dad has a Honda. His is like 15 years old still going strong and MUCH quieter than mine. However, the Generac was less than half the cost of the Honda. After this experience, I'd also go with something in the 3500w+ range like you linked below...Maybe even 4500-5000w if you don't plan to use it for anything other than power backup.
Mine uses maybe 1 gallon a day, so not super thirst. Also, get one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CY44TVNJ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1
That little pump has been clutch transferring fuel to generators, cars, and chainsaws. All the gas stations around me were cash only, since we're under 40 we had very little cash on hand so I've been keeping the car topped off from my big tank I use for the boat at home.

We have one. 3500 watts. Gas or propane powered.

We kept ours on the back porch and ran it 24/7 from Friday through Sunday evening, on propane as the gas was not working. We ran extension cords all over the house too. We had two refrigerators, and one freezer hooked to it. Also had a high velocity fan downstairs, and an window AC unit upstairs cooling one room. We ran an extension cord up to that room to power a light, the window AC unit, and the TV/Roku, and a phone/laptop charging station. Used a hotspot for internet. We plugged in the Keurig for coffee, as needed.
The only two big things we missed were laundry, and hot showers, which brings me to the next point.
You CAN hook the generator to backfeed your house through the fuse box, and we WILL be getting this done (by an electrician) someday. The benefit to doing this, aside from not having to run 5+ long extension cords with power strips all over the place, is you can also have a hot shower, as our tankless GAS hot water heater only needs around 125 watts to kick on the GAS hot water.
If you're getting a generator be careful of what you buy also. It's tempting to go the cheaper route and buy a traditional generator, but that can cause bigger problems with voltage fluctuations, which can brick any device that's electronic. Get an inverter generator, and preferably 3,000 watts or more, and you will be able to power most things in our house other than the HVAC, dryer, and stove. Also important to spend the extra $160 or so for a small, 6500BTU window unit for AC to cool one room. You can run a much larger 19,000 BTU AC unit that can cool 800 square feet, for 1900 watts, roughly, and still have overhead for some fridges. ALSO, newer freezers and refrigerators use significantly less watts than older ones. We have three "newish" fridges/freezers and they all use less than 200 watts. An older fridge can use far more, limiting your capacity for other things.
If you have your fuse panel set up to backfeed, with a plug on the outside of the house, you start with ALL the breakers off. You then turn on the one for the room you want to cool and use. Then the one with the hot water heater, making sure to keep all other things turned off on the circuits you activate. You can even light up the kitchen and laundry areas, and use the microwave, dish washer, garbage disposal, etc. but NOT the stove or dryer. We kept a cord available in the kitchen for manual things like the Keurig, garbage disposal, and dish washer. You could plug those in as needed for single use.
If you have a well, hooking in the fuse box can give you water again as well pumps use a max of 1200 watts, usually 700-800.

It a gas-powered wheely boi but it also plugs into the house, powering critical appliances through the breaker box.
We haven't lost power for longer than a day, so it's only been used a handful of times over the past three years.

is enough to power a fridge, freezer, and small devices.
I have 2 extension cords. One goes to freezer in garage and one (WITH A 3-WAY PLUG) goes to fridge.
I plugged another extension cord into the 3-way with a surge protector for small devices.
It is 14 years old and has always been reliable, never had an issue until MIA.
The GENERAC are bigger and can power more, but their dependability lessen with age.
The honda can power above appliances for 8-12 hours on 1 gallon.

I went and borrowed it (with permission) and as soon as I got home, lights came on. So let a neighbor use it.
But I've heard that it's a lot quieter than most and extremely reliable.
My neighbor behind me has like the Generac 5000 looking thing. Loud as hell. Would be obnoxious tailgating.

Your tacoma bed plug is prob good for 400 watts, or about 3.33 amps.
Oct 3, 2024, 4:13 PM
|
|
80% of 3.33 amps is 2.67 amps...so you can prob charge a phone, but no way you are making maragaritas in a blender.
Just somethin' to think about when you plug something into it.

before Hurricane Matthew, and ended using it for a week with no power. I just ran it during the day, plugged in the refrigerator, TV, etc, turned it off at night. The only think that sucks is my gas tankless water heater is hard wired, so still had cold showers.
The best thing about the Honda, I can go dig it out of my storage container and most likely crank it right up - a lot of those cheaper generators end up being one time use...

Get you a 50 amp plug and a 50 amp double pole breaker. Then find you some 6 ought and connect all of it.
Pull out a double pole breaker that you know you're not going to use and put that 50 amp breaker there. Like the stove/oven
Go to the main box and throw the main cut-off.
Cut off all breakers.
Crank that bad boy up.
Turn on the breakers you need.
When you see your neighbor has power, reverse this process.
I can power everything but the stove, oven, and AC. We have a gas hot water heater.

Well, considering food prices, I estimate we have a NICE generator's

worth just in the freezer alone. One outage and that pays for itself. Our neighbors are hauling spoiled food to the dump. Other thing, a cheap $150 or so window AC unit also pays for itself. When wife was preggers and was flashing, she kept turning the upstairs AC down to 65. I went to Lowes, bought a $150 AC unit for the window in the bedroom and told her to cut it as low as she likes. This saved $150 at least on electricity bills not having to cool the entire upstairs. We've kept it and used it for HVAC failures, and storms since then and it's a life saver.
Other thing, we both work from home. Generator allows me to earn a new generator in just a single good workday.
So yes, the window AC and generator, for us, have both been worth it.

most of our outages come in the winter it seems, so I snagged a plug in heater and we could put that in our BR w/ the wife and kids if it comes to it.
I sleep in front of the gas fire place.
if you have even a standard fridge / freezer worth of food, that alone is worth a generator now days. I have 2 of those and a big chest freezer. I'd wager north of $2k in food.
Plus.........nothing beats a pot of coffee when it's dadgum 15 degrees out and no power.
Also - if you guys don't have these I highly recommend...UPS for your network infrastructure. In happy path scenarios, you can mitigate outages caused by power glitches (their main purpose), but the battery back up also lasts for ~ 16 hours for me running my routers and switches.
Can be big if you lose power, but still have internet, and are tracking storms, etc.

bought a Honda eu2000i for work and rented it out on various jobs when I worked in the field. I did use it once in ten years for lost power, but I loaned it to my in-laws in Beaufort to help keep their fridge going, took them two weeks to get power back.

I've not traditionally been a boomer hater, but this past week is starting to turn me into one. Dude has 3 kids, thus I suspect a fridge/freezer full of food to feed said kids. That's kind of important, you MFing idiot. Nobody GAF that you made do without every modern convenience known to man when you were growing up.

but with a little more levity, we can win the day.
My timing could have been better. I'll work on that.

Yeah, I have looked at these but the price tag scares me off.

Plus, once I bought a portable Anker power block and that thing was TOAST within 3 months of using it. Maybe two charges and it never charged again.

Re: General Generator Question

Plenty of outages in Hawaii, I have this one:
https://www.dewalt.com/product/dxgnr8000/portable-gas-generator-8000-watt?tid=577136
8K on wheels with a battery for electric start - old folks, dainty women, and small children could fire it up no problem. 420cc motor by Generac. I especially like the runtime meter that automatically updates based on load and fuel tank level. My only regret is that I couldn't get the 10K, they only had the 8K on island when I got it.
I live in military housing so no permanent setup with the breaker box. I just run several extension cords. I have never overloaded it with 4 fridge/chest freezers, tv and electronics, bouncehouses, and more. We just don't have A/C when the power is out - nothing a swamp cooler can't fix. I have window units that it would run, but they don't fit the windows in this house (they all slide left/right instead of up/down).
It feels pretty great having lights on and movies playing while watching lousy neighbors suffer, assuming you have some neighbors you dislike that can see your house. I think it's funny to put the generator right out front for everyone to see (protected by the Good Lord and a gun).
