Are you even a little embarrassed that your athletic administration admitted to cheating during your three years of prosperity? It seems peculiar to be so happy.

Doesn't really bother me. We had a full scale investigation and these are the only two things they turned up? If anything it reassures me that nothing truly egregious is going on. I suspect there are minor infractions at every school, they just aren't investigated.
Long story short, I care much more about football than players getting cheap rent.

They admitted to failing to properly monitor. SCar did not cheat exactly. SMU cheated. tOSU cheated. SCar did not actively set out to defraud any system, but rather, accepted the word of their former compliance director, who was wrong. When the two boosters were identified, they disassociated them for life.
I think SCar did everything properly ONCE they were aware of the violations.
Violators of rules but not cheaters.

But that was also 25 years ago. We are not living on borrowed time like USuCk these days. You know nothing has changed for your team except the names of players as some go to jail and other hoodlums take their places.

Probably as embarrassed as you were during the early 1980's when Homer was driving around in his new car or even recently when some of your players were slapping the girlfriends around.
You guys are really funny. It is so much fun coming on this board. Do you read what you write?
Going to be so much fun when we get four in a row. You guys will need to go on suicide watch.

I was disappointed when I first heard about it.
Today was about whether they accepted the sel imposed punishment- and they did.
Yes, I am glad they accepted it so that is worth being happy about.
I never thought - as some Clemson fans posted- that a lot of severe sanctions were on the way.

Yes, I am embarassed that the kids and the football program ran the Whitney thing by the compliance officer to make sure it was legit. The compliance officer said it was fine because the cost was as much or more than the cost of apartments and dorms in the area. She made a mistake and was demoted because of it. There was no intent to do anything wrong and there was no competitive advantage gained because of it. I am embarassed that our compliance officer was unable to come to the same conclusion that the NCAA came to, but I am proud that our players and football team followed the rules and ran it by the compliance office before they did anything. The reason the sanctions were accepted is because they actually are more than what we should have received.

Are you seriously overlooking the hypocrisy in your post?

Our success in the late 70's has a lot to do with scandals. Now I firmly believe our national championship was legitimate, but how are we just going to pretend that there is no relationship between our success and our cheating?
Rivalries are so fun, but they make some people blind. Why can't we just leave the rivalry on the field? Even on the quality of education or the campus is great. But creating false dichotomies about cheating doesn't add to the rivalry at all.

The Clemson NC happened before I was born...but after the scandal broke, was our fanbase filled with shame and demanding to the administration that we forfeit our NC?
Of course not...no fans are going to be "shamed" by any of this crap because legitimately everyone is doing it to a degree.

scandals, then we are just as guilty.
And if we are just as guilty, then what good does it do to point out their compliance issues?
If you acknowledge that we do the same thing, then my false dichotomy comment was wrong. But if you acknowledge we do the same thing, then what's the point of your post? To get them to remind us of our scandal?

I agree 100%. Our most successful run of football came with a string of scandals...but that's just how this is done. EVERY program is dirty to a degree. Carolina made these infractions, they're going to make infractions...at the same time, we're making infractions ourselves right now, no doubt about it.
I'm not saying all these infractions are Cam Newton or U of Miami-sized...but it's foolish to point our fingers at teams and talk about how "dirty" they are. If it meant we won a national championship, I'd be willing to bet my life that 90% of you would have been okay with Clemson paying for Cam Newton...I sure would have.

I have a question for you
Apr 28, 2012, 12:44 AM
|
|
After reading or hearing about the details of the infractions and USC's self-imposed penalties, did you really think that the NCAA was going to bang the hammer on the Gamecocks? Or did you just hope that would be the case? Anyone who knows how these things work could see from a mile away that no additional penalties would be imposed. I doubt most Clemson fans were really shocked about the ruling. USC could have been much easier on themselves with the self-imposed penalties.
If you are trying to claim some moral victory by saying "you still cheated," remember that moral victories are just comfortable excuses and are essentially worthless.
Am I a little embarrassed? Maybe I was when the news first broke, but how much should I really care about our compliance department? It made a big mistake but not a huge mistake, and it needs to improve in order to protect and monitor a perennially good team.
We did not "cheat" in a way that decided the outcome of games. The 3 years probation/scholarship reductions will hurt but not burn, and I'm happy that we can start to put this whole thing behind us.
Lol at "three years of prosperity" though, that's a good one.
