Hate Speech & the Barley Lamp

"Hate speech" is defined as communication that expresses hatred, discrimination, or incites violence against a person or group based on attributes such as race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other characteristics. It is generally characterized by abusive or threatening language that seeks to demean or harm individuals or communities.
I just mention this because for whatever reason, there are a number of you on this site who think there's a free pass for hate speech involving people who identify as members of another political party - or in the case of a lot of us, no party at all. (I'm now a registered independent after 20+ years of being a registered Republican.)
I would say "people with differing beliefs than yourself"...except that there's several of you who really don't appear to have any particular beliefs, you're just haters in general. There's nothing whatsoever wrong with being conservative or liberal, those are just worldviews, an approach to life more than any political orientation, and neither wing has a corner on asshattery. Regardless, it clearly isn't about policy or reason with several of you, you just hate your fellow humans to an absolutely poisonous degree and politics is just a convenient vehicle through which you can express that bile. You don't really care who it is, you just want targets, and your anonymity makes you think you can get away with it.
But you can't. Crump and BMeist tend to give a fairly long leash to folks on the P&R boards, which is a good idea - politics and religion can absolutely get heated, and it's better to have it here than spill over to the main board - but there are still limits. And several of you are a mile over it.
I used to be a bouncer back in the day. I can absolutely promise you that if I had heard some of you folks talking to someone in a bar or club that I was working the way you talk to other people in here, I would have walked you on the spot...because the way you're talking is a fight or hate crime about to happen. And I have never once heard anybody at a Clemson game talking like that to someone else. (Actually, I did...it was a drunken UGA fan back in that godawful 30-0 game back in '03, though I mostly blanked that out and will again twenty seconds from now. But the cops walked that guy too.) But that is not and never has been what Clemson's about.
But what several of you are doing is hate speech, plain and simple...and it needs to stop. Hate speech is banned on public forums and in public spaces in general for a reason, and that reason is very simple: because hate speech is a direct incitement of violence, and it can get people hurt or killed. And there's several of you who are clearly working your way up to that, egging each other on...and are frankly getting out of control. I've seen it happen a couple of times in here before...and when things start spiraling, my experience is, the banhammer's about to come out and the worst offenders are shipped off to electronic purgatory for a few weeks (or months, in a couple of your cases) to give things a good long think. Several of you have already had lengthy stays in Banville...and it's pretty clear you learned nothing from it. And my experience also is, the closer we get to the election, the more vicious things tend to get.
So I would just say to everybody: let's reign it all in a bit, and strive for a bit more civility. Or several of you are likely not going to be here much longer. At the end of the day, we're all Americans and Clemson fans first (or we're supposed to be)...and if you're a hater first above all else, then you're neither and there's really no communicating with you anyhow. (And you really don't need to be here).
The Barley Lamp's about to light in a little more than an hour, folks. I would humbly suggest we all collectively take a breath...and remember there's things more important than petty politics, and especially more important than virulent personal hatreds some of us seem to be looking to direct anywhere we think we can get away with putting it. And hate speech does not belong on public forums...and especially not in Clemson forums.
It's time to park it. We have a game tomorrow, people.

I asked ChatGPT to summarize the OP for you:
"The post calls for civility on a public forum, addressing rising hate speech, especially in political discussions. The author defines hate speech as language that incites violence or demeans others based on identity, and warns some users are crossing the line. They mention political disagreements are normal, but some users are spreading hatred for its own sake. While moderators allow heated discussions, the author warns that continued abusive behavior could lead to bans. The post urges users to prioritize civility, reminding them that hate speech has no place in the Clemson community or public forums."

Boo, hiss.
And I'll be up here in Detroit. Watching traffic, I guess.
I think I may have done a foolish thing. It definitely feels that way on gamedays.

I had been back in Cali for about two weeks after invading Iraq then flew to SC for some leave. I stayed the weekend in the high rises with a hs girlfriend, went to her brother's frat party Friday night and got drunk on grain alcohol, was up at 8 tailgating, it was a noon game and the student section was directly in the 100° sun. Three hours of beatdown later and somehow that experience cemented my decision to go to Clemson.

debating issues, and we should never encourage or even hint at violence against people who wish us no harm, just because we don't like them or disagree with them.
Having said that, designating things as "hate speech" is too often a way of silencing an opinion (thus free speech) and controlling people with whom we disagree. I don't approve of being mean or hateful, but it must be allowed somewhere in the public realm as long as it can be challenged and rebuffed. The distinction must be clear between that and calls for violence, and that distinction must be respected.
There's plenty of snide, nasty, hateful stuff in here from all sides, who think their intellect is so clearly superior and their opinions so obviously correct.
Having said all of that, I'm not opposed to the old Barley Lamp in here!

I’d like to know what he’s talking about that’s so bad. I know the NC_Tiger comment was bad, but you hear stuff like that and much, much worse everyday in life and throughout social media platforms.
But whatever, I guess we will get banned if we engage now…
