I have a problem with Mickey's blog today

"Lost hope." Lost hope? Are you kiddin me? That sounds like the typical pessimistic Clemson fan that I am so tired of hearing from. This title makes it sound like we go the death penalty or something.
I take pride in Clemson as a school as much as a football program. I am proud of my degree (That I will be getting in two weeks) and the prestigious conference that I am a part of.
Stop acting like this is the end of the world. So we added Pitt and Syracuse. So what? For every BC, Syracuse, and Duke there is a FSU, GT, Miami, VT, and several others with a solid football tradition. The strength of conferences comes in shifts. I don't really see how the Big 12 or the Big 1o is really that far ahead of the ACC from a football standpoint. This is still one of the major BCS conferences with several teams capable of being top 25 staples
I like being able to play geographically logical rivals. Who wants to travel to Iowa State or Texas Tech for away games? How many Maryland fans do you think will make it out to Minnesota or Wisconsin?
Staying in the ACC was the best move for Clemson. Deny it all you want, but it's true

(And not fundamentally change all of our rivals, our travel, and the makeup of our athletics) was to go the SEC. And that wasn't happening.
So, you look around, you make the best with what you have, and you lock the other likeminded ACC football squads in. If the VT's, and FSU's, and Miami's of the ACC (along with Clemson) get back to where they should be, then the reest will take care of itself.

To agree that staying in the ACC was the best of the available options.
I don't think it would've been a good move to head to uncharted (and distant) waters with either of the bigs. And the SEC was simply not an option.

We don';t have enough fans.
THE SEC is finally leveraging their assets(fans) and getting from TV what they are worth. THe ACC isn't worth as much, even if we have better teams on the field.

impromptu judgement of a perfectly reasonable post.
I agree with everything you said. I'm sick of all that crap too. The way to rectify the situation is to simply start winning games...and that goes for the whole conference. We nearly have everything in place to be perennial power and if we can maintain that, we will eventually make a pass at a national title.

I'm so sick of the woe is me attitude that many Clemson fans have with respect to the ACC. I think it is a good thing to be in a conference with the quality of schools the ACC has. I think it is a good thing that most of Clemson's competition is located in the Southeast in areas I can get to if I want to go to an away game. I think it is a good thing that the ACC has tradition.

We were stuck in the ACC in the 1980s when we won it all....when we get to the point when we can compete for the NCAA championship and I hope it is this year then lets complain then...the down side we are stuck in the ACC and we cannot generate the revenue SEC schools do...the up side is we are stuck in the ACC and the road to the football championship looks a little easier to me....I am not happy about being in the conference either but this is where we are.

Mickey prefers the Big 12 over a SOLID ACC (in all areas)?
Apr 24, 2013, 12:24 PM
|
|
Mickey sometimes lacks common sense, and he gets carried away with his emotions. Unfortunately he has a means to broadcast those emotions and lack of common sense.
The new ACC with it's GOR is far better than the Big 12 option. FAR, FAR BETTER.
"Lost hope"? Really, Mickey? Give me a break. That's completely overboard and ridiculous.
Step away from the ledge. Clemson and the ACC will be just fine. We have survived and thrived (when WE take care of business) just fine in far worse conditions. You should should try to take time to think things through before letting irrational feelings speak for you.

I have gone back and forth in the conference debate. I mainly just want to see the final $ per team/per year numbers to see where we are. If the SEC's newest contract give each team +5 million more every year, then yes we will be on an uphill climb trying to keep up with SCar. We got lucky with Dabo but when Spurrier retires, they will have tons of money to go hire another big name coach... can we? The only reason we were able to get Chad and Brent was because Dabo is a quality guy who gives up part of his own salary.
But with SCar its like always beating up on your little brother (the first 100 years) then one summer he grows 3" and its a lot more equal... only in this scenario little brother will out grow us 3" every summer with no end in sight just because of a TV contract.
Maybe the contracts arent that far apart but if they have a 50-100 million dollar advantage over the next 10 years, well what do you all think is going to happen?

Disagree that staying in the ACC is best for Clemson

I have for years detested being a part of this North Carolina run conference. Seems that every decision that comes down the pike favors Tobacco Road,... and we're forced to tag along. Not saying the Big 12 is the way to go (definitely not!), the SEC is much more attractive and perhaps something that might work out someday,... with the recent ACC agreement, however, everything's been taken off the table for the foreseeable future. Sure do hate the idea of Clemson not being allowed any future choices,... but wait,... that's to Tobacco Road's benefit also,...!!!! Some things never change, and Clemson continues to be North Carolina's lap dog.

I too had a small sliver of hope that one day we'd join the SEC. Not because I believe they're the greatest thing since sliced bread. Just that the money is funneling into there now and it would be good exposure for Clemson. However, I had very little doubt that they'd pick us because it doesn't expand their TV footprint at all.
A few of the ACC schools just need to compete and win the OOC games and bowl games. SEC has Alabama, UF, LSU, and I guess add UGA. Auburn was a fluke and they're back to mediocrity again. That's 4 teams. ACC could have us, FSU, UM, and VT.
The one thing that the SEC has going as well is media hype and the fact that no one notices that their OOC schedules are a joke. Their pre-season rankings get all inflated, so if they lose it's to a "quality" opponent and don't drop much *cough*Florida the last two years*cough*. Then if they win it's because they beat a "quality" opponent and jump way up *cough*Florida again*cough*.
I'll admit that Alabama is good. #### good. LSU is very good too. Those two are the only teams I'd be very worried about playing and we beat one of them last year.
The ACC just needs to get the other football schools to step up, schedule our games like they do in the SEC (weak opponent or bye before a strong opponent), and sign better freaking TV deals and bowl tie-ins.

I'll give you some facts for my geography argument
The closest Big 12 school to Clemson is WVU at 502 miles. The next closest is Baylor at 941 miles.
There are 8 schools in the ACC that are closer then WVU. 6 of those schools are within 300 Miles of Clemson
The average ACC school is 410 miles from Clemson. Take out the furthest away (BC, at 960 miles) and the average distance drops to 355 miles.
The average Big 12 school is 970 miles from Clemson. Take out the furthest away (TX Tech, 1,251 miles) and the average drops to 935 miles.
Those are some facts. Now for some logic and reasoning.
I emphasize the distance from Clemson out of consideration for the players, not the fans. Can you imagine, as a student athlete, playing at Texas one Saturday (1,041 miles away), traveling back to Clemson, enduring a week of class, practice, and schoolwork, then traveling to Kansas St (1,036 miles) the next weekend? That kind of travel would get exhausting for the team, especially as the year goes on.
Do you need some more facts? Any at all?

Thought it was a bit pessimistic myself. As far as iptay and tickets there is only so much advantage you can have. Alabama may make more than either of us but that difference is negligible compared to tv money. Thats the key. Pretty soon the SEC will pull ahead. The main advantage there is facilities and recruiting budgets. That doesnt always win the recruits though. Clemson will have the money to build state of the art stuff. So will fsu and vt. What this does is solidify who the football schools are in the ACC. I would say this deal puts yall in a place where in down years you are still one of the top teams in a BCS conference. If thats the case you just need a couple of more schools to step up. The potential is there. UM, GT, UNC, NCSU, and Louisville have shown they can be top 25 type programs. Win some big OOC games and BCS bowls and the prestige can grow quickly. The SEC wasnt happening for clemson but this was the next best thing. Plus holds SEC at 14 unless big 12 is poached which is even better for ACC. The only reason to be really desperate to get out is the fear of other football schools leaving. Now you know you are keeping at least 6 or 7 teams with the potential to put good products on the field.
Also the SEC being kept away from unc and ncst is good for both of us in recruiting. Now we would have to take ECU to get that state. Dont see that happening even though it isnt impossible. So both of us should continue getting quality players from NC. I wanted to stay at 12 but at least this should stop the shakeup for a while.

Apr 24, 2013, 11:29 PM
|

A lot of the doomsday crowd seem to believe that the SEC's stint of success is now solidified forever in football and that simply isn't the case. There is an ebb and flow to the football powers...there are so many variables that can happen between now and five years from now. All it takes is one scandal, one coach leaving, a couple of teams from other conferences abasing the SEC perceived power and then everything starts to change. What would happen to the SEC landscape if Saban left for the NFL? What if he left for the NFL five years ago? Do any of you think the SEC would be where they are at now? What would happen if an FSU, Clemson, Ohio State, or other non SEC program perennially started knocking off the SEC schools especially with the playoff system. ESecPN can't sell something that isn't there. If the SEC ever starts to lose steam, there will be plenty of other sharks in the water waiting for their turn to take a bite out of the lime light...

As long as the ACC have a BCS Bowl Tie in and an undefeated ACC team will get into the NC game. How can we lose??? It's kinda an advantage that the we only really have to play FSU VT(sometimes)...and the rest are not that good. As long as Clemson, FSU, VT are in the ACC(and the new grants just really wrote it in stone) the ACC will always he in the major conferences! Clemson is one of the kings or big dogs in this conference! The moment when we should worry is when FSU-VT scrambles...then its time to pace the floor. Clemson-FSU-VT are the big dog program that keeps this conference running in football! GUESS WHAT none of those 3 are gone they all are still HERE!

Come on guys, right now it looks like the coots and the sec is ahead buy Leaps and bounds. There's one way to change it. WIN! Beat these sec schools, make their ratings drop, then see where the $ falls. A lot can happen in 13 years. Just look how far we have came since then, and u could say the same for the coots. I can defenly see Clemson, Miami, Fsu, and VT, being top ten. Maryland, Unc, UVA, and even Wake being top 25. NC State and BC, Pitt, Syracuse, all have been ranked in the last five years. I don't know why everyone wants to be in the sec. I don't want anything associated with a coot. The ACC can be the best football conference in the country. Yes, That's a fact. And Yes, It starts with the game on 8/31/2013. If we smack these sec schools around no one will give a rats ### about how much $ the coots have.
