I feel like Clemson’s evolving…not necessarily for the best

Sep 25, 2021, 9:06 PM

I love Dabo and definitely don’t want to see him go, but I think he’s going to have to make some tough decisions like he did early on in his career. I feel like our coaching staff is not to the standard it needs to be to consistently play for titles like Alabama. Instead of hiring the absolute best and brightest, we’re turning the reigns over for loyalty sake and hiring former players as assistants and promoting from within.

When Dabo’s defense came under heavy fire after Steele, he made one of the best decisions as a program when hiring Venables. From failure, we emerged stronger and for the better. What we didn’t do is promote from within or try and experiment with co-defensive coordinators. Someone like Saban has no problem hiring someone like Kiffin if it means success. He hires who he thinks will win. Caldwell appears to have clocked out. Our run game is abysmal and much of that falls on his shoulders.

To go along with our promote-from-within mentality, we’ve shunned the transfer portal as a useful tool to fill in weak spots. The football landscape is evolving because of this, but we’re going down a different path that doesn’t have to be as hard as we make it. We’re trying to develop lesser talent and their loyalty, is rewarded with playing time, but we are limited by the extent our coaching staff can actually develop those players.

I know all good things come to an end, but it’s frustrating when you feel it’s self inflicted and doesn’t have to be this way. I like the talent we have on our team. There are teams out there with lesser talent that appear to be doing more. I normally don’t make these posts and refrained from saying anything after GT…but this is getting obvious and most everyone can see it now. We should’ve lost this game much worse with the missed field goals and uncontested drops by NC State’s WRs.

Make some changes Dabo…even if they’re small. You get paid the big bucks to make the the tough calls.
