it looks like a bomb went off. Trees down everywhere, power poles snapped in half, power lines are a complete mess.... Been without power since Friday morning but have portable generators and plenty of gasoline for now so it's like camping inside our house. The way things look - we will probably be without power for a week or so. Luckily Shelby has no issues with the water/sewage systems and since we have a natural gas water heater we are able to have hot water. Cell phone coverage has gotten much better today - was out most of Friday/Saturday.
Picture of a house in a nearby neighborhood where a tree essentially cut it in half....
All in all we are counting our blessings because west of us towards Asheville is an absolutely disaster zone. The reports we are getting from almost everything west of us is horrendous. I don't think our national leadership or most people in the USA truly realize the scope of the disaster that is unfolding in Western NC. I'm afraid the death toll in Western NC is going to quickly rise as Asheville and the other mountain communities are almost completely cut off from everything except helicopters.
The powers that be better get the military energized (way more than I'm hearing about right now) and start some full court press disaster relief ops in Western NC or there is going to be a very bad outcome for many people...

But it almost seems like uptown was the dividing line between good and bad. You're not that far away, and things seem exponentially worse than what we got in SE Charlotte; a few down trees, but I never lost power save for a few flickers.

Gastonia seems to be the dividing line - most everything East of it was sporadic

stuff (localized flooding, power outages etc...). I drove through Kings Mountain last night - place was a complete blackout. Until today 90% of Shelby was in blackout. Until earlier today 3 of the 4 main power transmission lines that feed the Shelby substations were out. We now have 2 lines operable but are still have 80% of Cleveland county without power because of all the damage to the lines and transformers.
Talking with folks that have relatives further West - it's bad.... real bad. Some haven't heard from relatives since Thursday night and the reports we are getting from some of the responders is that it is apocalyptic in the Western NC hills...

Nobody in the mountains was expecting the need to evacuate for a hurricane, and those flash floods can happen in an instant. This was a tweet from a guy I know:
"B just got off the phone with a coworker doing a construction loan for a couple in the Mountains. His coworker was able to get in touch with the husband...who said 'the house is gone, it lifted off its foundation...and my wife was in it...we cannot find her'."

So sad.... between the flooding, winds/tree damage and mud/rock slides

the amount of damage and loss of life due to Helene is going to be horrendous. Don't know if you have seen pictures of I40 around the NC/Tennessee border but I40 is essentially gone - nothing left but a tremendous missing chunk of earth.... Getting things from Eastern Tennessee over the Western NC mountain range is no longer an option. Most everything will have to be routed South through Atlanta or North through Virginia adding a LOT of time.

This pic is the lake Adger daaammm, the lake I grew up on. Below that was Highway number 9 bridge which is now gone. These mountain areas are only connected by a few roads and once they are washed out there is no way to get to them besides air.
I also grew up on Lure as several friends had lake houses there. That lake was built privately and was not made for a 100 year flood. The houses are all right next to the lake and or boat houses on the lake.

check on my father’s family. It was an odd oasis. No lights anywhere leading to it - then suddenly power in Shelby. Then after driving thru, there was no power again a couple of miles out of town

To help State Emergency Management and FEMA. First to assist in search and rescue / life safety and second to get a complete damage assessment. Then they should be requesting additional Federal assistance above existing levels.
The anecdotal accounts seem too numerous and legitimate to ignore the need to ratchet up the response. Local county Emergency Management should also be raising all types of calls for additional assistance.

and praying he can find gas around Spartanburg - if not I will be headed up that way.
As I posted yesterday, the devastation is not known and the people there feel like they are being left to their own devices to figure it all out.
They need help bad.

trip home from Clemson many years ago when I was still a student. I had an old 1964 Pontiac Safari station wagon at the time, affectionately known as "The Tank". Enough sheet metal in that thing to make three or more Honda Accords. It was one of those huge boats that had THREE full rows of seats, with the back one facing the tailgate. It had a 389 V-8 that was in bad shape, and was prone to carbon fouling spark plugs. I left Clemson with a FULL tank of gas, but literally as I hit the outskirts of town, my trusty steed jumped down on seven, then SIX cylinders due to said carbon fouled spark plugs.
I was going to stop by USuK and pick up a friend of mine there who needed a ride home. It started to rain, and by the time I hit the Huger street area, I ran out of gas in the middle of the four lane. In the rain, I WALKED all the rest of the way to get to a phone at a gas station in town. (No such thing as cell phones in 1974.) I had very little money, either, like your typical college kid of the time, so my mom wound up bringing several five gallon gas cans with her from home to get me going again, when she came to our aid.
"The Tank" had burned through 20 gallons of gas between Clemson and Columbia! I bit the bullet, pulled the heads off the engine, and did a thorough overhaul of them not long after that fiasco. Mileage went UP to about 11 mpg after that. It was a GREAT hunting car, though. The old "Jetaway" automatic transmission would not spin the wheels, which made it great for going through sometimes muddy fields or low areas. It would probably be a great aid delivery wagon in this current crisis.

They can open work out of big box stores that have non perishable food and water; and coordinate giving it to the people in need. Target and Walmarts, ingles, log in the donations and receive tax breaks and community karma.
It’s amazing that it’s not being talked about on the national news when this is a huge crisis.

If I had no food or water and a huge store was sitting there full of it at a certain point it’s time to take action and ask for forgiveness later. My family is worth more than the consequences of a charge.
