I had a devastating loss this weekend

A part of me has left this Earth. I was on the verge of tears when it happened.

I have had these since ~2007. Sent into Costa 4 times for broken frames. Twice for cracked lenses.

The oldest picture on my phone is from 2012 and I have them on.

These glasses have seen some shid, and now they're gone.

I always said, once these break, I'm out on Costa. Their sell-out and now global owners suck a fat hairy sack.

I replaced them with a pair of Maui Jim Sports that I'll use for playing golf and working out. I replaced my every day with a pair of Bajios.

If y'all haven't given Bajio a look, you should. Their lenses are dope AF (got my wife 2 pairs for Christmas to try em out).

A fallen soldier, salute.

It’s shocking how far Costa fell, their current products are absolute trash. I left costa probably around 5 years ago and went through two pairs of Kaenon’s which I liked but lenses got cloudy over time, now in a pair of Maui Jim’s. Spendy, but worth the splurge IMO.

I have several pair, but haven't had any issues with any of them since Luxotica bought them out.

I have been thinking of picking up a pair of Smiths, Bajio, or even another pair of Maui Jim's however. Its been about 6 months since I bought another pair of Costa's, so I'm ready.

they're great for playing golf and what not. idk if I like em for every day wear b/c they seem pretty fragile (compared to what I'm used to).

stoked for these Bajios though.

What's Costa's repair policy, out of curiosity?

1

Reply

Had two pairs of aviators, MJ (Guardrails) and Costa, and both broke earlier this year. MJs got sat on in the passenger seat and destroyed the frame/stems; Costas just...fell apart while I was wearing them, and the hinge looks cheap af from the inside. I doubt I'll buy Costas again, but if they'll fix these for free, I'd probably send 'em off.

I know the MJs will cost $60ish, just haven't gotten around to it.

but the last time I broke these was ~2020, right before covid, right before acquisition / Luxottica policies implemented.

At the time, if you broke the frames on costas it was $9.95 + shipping. If you broke the lenses it was $75 + shipping (all from memory, feels pretty spot on)

Now, I think it's only for one year, and they give you a ~20-30% coupon for a next pair.

I learned this b/c I have another pair of MJ style costas that broke. When I did the warranty that's what I was told.

I told em to fugg right off w/ that and I'll never buy another pair of costas again.

I disagree with your assessment. Costa makes good sunglasses IMO and have a terrific warranty/repair sitch. In fact that's the main reason I buy them.

Yes, during covid they shut down the warranty program nearly completely. As of about March 2024 it is back and good as ever.

generous than what they actually advertise. They were quick to fully replace.

Covid came and it was all like no warranty, just return and we'll get you like a $60 coupon off of another pair. NOFANKS.

I had a pair needing to be returned and just threw em in a drawer and went and bought another pair. When thems finally broke, I revisited a return and found they were back open for warranty biz and got 2 new pair.

I have an older pair (Saltbreak) that all the rubber has or is coming off, and several friends/co-workers who have same issues with frames falling apart. I have rec'd Maui Jims to them and to anybody who is within earshot.

Had another pair about a year ago that I just lightly bumped against my car door (while wearing them) and arm snapped right off. This was one of their new "enviro-friendly" frames that they make out of old shrimp nets or something. Tensile strength is about same as a matchstick. I got these really cheap on some lowball clearance site, Tanga or something so they were cheap, so I am not that brokenhearted over them. Will one day try to find a used frame same model on ebay to replace for maybe $25 hopefully since lenses are still perfect.

Not buying Costas ever again. Quality has gone to pitiful. Lenses remain great, but frames don't hold up.

Polarization is near worthless, so paying extra for that is a waste and is quite honestly annoying as it can block the view of a digital clock and phone if everything is oriented correctly... or incorrectly i guess.
