Our baseball program is middle of the road in ACC. Never thought I'd say that.

Our team this year is middle of the road in the ACC. Our program is much more than a couple of down years (and btw, our down years are still years than many ACC schools would call huge successes).

Currently is what I'm talking about. This year, we're sixth, and the past few years we've been middle of the pack in the conference. Obviously, tradition-wise we're better than that. But not right now.

I don't think any competent ACC baseball school would call our recent down years success. What a defeatist attitude.

I'd like to. I really would. But I have seen the steady decline in this program for the past five or so years. I just don't trust it. Wish I could.

Here is the rest of the ACC season in a nutshell
1 out of 3 vs UNC 3 out of 3 vs BC 2 out of 3 vs WF 1 out of 3 vs UM 1 out of 3 vs GT 2 out of 3 vs UMD 1 out of 3 vs FSU
Good against bad teams. Get ripped by good teams. Make the tourney, get ousted early by some school in the northeast......rinse and repeat.

Do you even watch the games palmettoson? We clearly dominated the first two games of the series and had we not played a DH I would fully expect us to play a much more solid game 3. Your negative attitude is annoying. Last week you posted about how UVA has dominated us in recent memory and how they have passed us in the ACC. Now you give your prediction on the rest of the season. How about you look at our 3 games series with FSU GT and UMD over the past years. We tend to play much better at the end of the season.
Our young bats have really impressed me this year, and we have a ton of speed on the base paths. We have the kind of team that keeps the pressure on the opposition and forces them to make plays. McGibbon is going to start hitting the deep ball, and Firth and Meyer will find their grove on the mound. Im pretty excited about the second half of the season, it will be a fun ride. If your not thats fine, but dont rain on the parade of true fans.

Poorest fundamental offensive team.......
Mar 24, 2013, 1:48 AM
|
|
.....I've seen at Clemson in 40 years. Most of our guys (or coaches as the case might be) don't have a clue about fundamental offense. Down 3-0 in the bottom of the 2nd inning, first batter (Kennedy) walks and tries to steal on a 1-1 count and gets thrown out. McGibbon then singles to right. Next batter walks and the 4th batter of the inning singles to right. McGibbon gets thrown out at the plate. Next batter flies out to center and we get nothing. With reasonable fundamental baseball skills/stategy, we should have had 2 runs in and runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Possibilities for tying the score, or taking the lead and control of the game are statistically overwhelming, but we get nothing out of 4 consecutive batters reaching base on either a walk or a hit. Should have scored 4 or more runs with execution of basic fundamental elements of the game. Take the momentum back from Duke and sweep the series. Instead we get pounded 13-1 by an inferior team. Sad!

I respectfully disagree with you on the poor fundamental offense. Look at the situation.. We had scored 18 runs in 2 games, and in those 2 games Duke had committed 7 errors. 7 errors!! You have your senior ace on the mound. Jacks plan was to stay aggressive, and force them to make plays early. Your only in the second inning, and at the time you have to think Firth will settle down and your looking at a 4 or 5 run game. The steal was not poor fundamental/strategy or anything. It was attempting to throw an early knockout punch. It didn't work, it happens. But you cant fault Jack for putting pressure on them early. Now in hindsight, nothing went right yesterday. It happens in baseball. We take the series and get ready for 2 tough opponents next week.

Respectfully agree

with a lot of your comments. Baseball is a mental game of various strategies and percentages. That's what makes it great! Sometimes things work, sometimes not. However, there is no justification for Kennedy's attempt to steal 2nd with NO OUTS, trailing 3-0, regardless of the inning. That's bad baseball strategy. (By the way, Kennedy tried to go from 1st to 3rd Friday on a McGibbon shot to right field. He had barely rounded 2nd when the right fielder came up throwing and got thrown out by at least 10 feet) Check the stats and you'll find that our base-stealing success (6 of 10) against Duke was less than stellar for the entire series. 33 steals in 51 attempts for the year is a fair percentage, but certainly not great. This team has been thrown out consistently trying to take extra bases during the first 23 games. There's a time to take legitimate chances on the base paths and a time to remain patient. Hustle, supreme effort and applying offensive pressure are one thing......poor judgement in key situations is another. I've seen every game this year, and we've had runners thrown out trying to stretch plays at 2nd, 3rd and home in far too many of them in my opinion.
By the way, I didn't fault Jack in my original post. I don't play the blame game. Kids make poor decisions just as coaches do sometimes. I just don't recognize the same game that I've known and loved for over 40 years in some of the things that we do on the field. Just sayin'.
I'll be in Athens Tuesday and at DKS Wednesday to witness what those outings hold in store. Go Tigers!!

Well I still think with the production from our bats in the first 2 games, the steal is ok. It does look really bad with the hits coming behind it because we know the run would have scored. I have to think Jack planned pre-game that he was going to try to steal early especially with no outs to spark the offense again. But I think everyone can agree game 3 yesterday was a lost cause from the very beginning. I get a little sensitive to some of the negative talk about our teams. I pay too much money to go to Clemson and enjoy our teams too much to read some of the nonsense people on here say. But I can agree with a lot of your statements, I do feel we sometimes run ourselves into trouble, but Jack said pre season we would be aggressive and that we are. Have fun in Georgia, and hope we can take it to Georgia and UNC this week.

Again.........tenacious, aggressive baseball is my choice as well. That, however, does not excuse bad judgement, whether by coaches or players. I understand your sensitivy to mindless negative comments and I agree that many who post on this board have little knowledge of which they speak. Please distinguish between that sort of chatter and constructive realism.
Thanks for the intelligent debate. Go Tigers!!!!!!!!!!!
