Whiskey question

I don’t know difference between whiskeys scotch bourbon etc. but bro in law was talking about a whiskey that started with a D. I think he said was roughly around $250 a bottle and I thought he implied the bottom of the bottle looked like a ball or a bowl? Any ideas on the name of such a whiskey?

The only thing that comes to mind is Pinch Scotch. The bottle had an almost round bottom and the bottle “rocked” when placed on a table. Is not expensive.

because my dad always told me he drank pappy van winkle. It took me way too long to figure out he was just drinking cheap whiskey from his own decanter.

As for Blanton's, as others have said, it can be hard to find depending on location. Sometimes it's just a matter of timing.
One of the state-run liquor store locations here in Virginia has gotten Blanton's in twice in the last month. Also, Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, and others that are harder to find.

18 Yr Old Dalmore is about $250 a bottle, go older and it gets more expensive. It is Scotch Whisky and can be referred to as Scotch or Whisky or Scotch Whisky (the Scots don’t put an “I” or an “E” after the K.
Bourbon is an American Spirit, example: Makers Mark. Bourbon has die hard fans, especially in the US and double especially in Kentucky.
Canadians make Canadian Whiskey (notice the “e” after the K), example: Crowne Royal.
Irish make Irish Whiskey (also an “e” after the K) example: Jameson. I like Irish Whiskey the best, it’s smoother, but to each his own.
Scots will tell you that ONLY Scots make Whisky. They will also tell you, that if it’s not made in Scotland then it’s not Whisky. Scotch Whisky has a rampant following, much like college football and with just as many favorites.
The Japanese also make something they call Whisky (The Scots adamantly deny that it is Whisky) example: HIBIKI
In my experience, the longer any of it is aged in its cask, the smoother it gets. But storing it for 15, 18 or 25 years costs money, therefore the old stuff is expensive. I can tolerate 15 yr old Scotch Whisky. 8 yr old Scotch is about as smooth as a rusted hacksaw.

Good explanation. My sipping Scotch is Balvenie Doublewood. My house scotch is Grants. For the life of me I can’t develop a taste for bourbon. I do occasionally sip Bushmill’s original. Toured their brewery a couple of years back.
