If you are cooking bacon by any other method other than baking in the oven on a sheet pan, you are doing it wrong.

Who said no pan?
Aug 19, 2021, 11:15 AM

Winner is that using a sheet pan, I seem to get more of the grease to save for future frying of stuff, vs when frying on the stove, half of the grease ends up splattered everywhere.

Other trick is to put the bacon in with the oven cold and let them heat up to 400 together. Renders the fat MUCH better.

fire hazzard is more TRDJ's alley. Most of his wreck or mendations would cause bodily harm or destruction, not just poor outcomes for food.

FTR, there are only 3 ways to cook bacon.
Aug 19, 2021, 12:56 PM
|
|
In order from bestist to tolerable:
1. Blackstone 2. Oven. Sheet pan layered with parchment paper, bacon on top. Put in cold oven, turn on to 400, when it preheats you still have 5-10 minutes. 3. In the bottom of a pot on top of a stove. You'd BETTER be putting something else in there with it though, not just removing the bacon and eating it.

like it crispy. Getting it crispy without burning is easier in this pan.
Myself, I'll do bacon to the equivalent of "medium rare" to "medium" most of the time if it's just me. Also, parcooking it in this way makes it easier to wrap jalapenos, asparagus, hotdogs, etc without it ending up slimy.

and I'm not coordinated enough to load it without it taking forever but I will use it in the winter. Do you flip each slice 1/2 way through? that was a total mess.
I cook a whole pack to 2/3 done and freeze it so I can have a couple of pieces on a work morning after 15 seconds in the microwave.

If you fry chicken or fish and let it rest on paper towels the bottom gets all soggy, but if you use a cooling rack and it stays crispy all around.

Blackstone would be fine, other than you have to sit there and tend it while it cooks, flip it, put a press on it if you want it flat. Just more work to use a griddle. Therefore, you are wrong.

Try it. Parchment needs to be bigger than the pan. The corners will curl up. Bacon stays greasy becuase it's in grease.
The curled up corner makes for nice open faced funnel to pour the grease into the glass jar you save bacon grease in.
TRUST ME ON THIS PAPI.

Well, I know the foil will absorb zero grease and I know

I barely have to wipe the pan if I am careful and do not have a hole in the foil.
Next time I want to venture out, I will pull out the parchment.

Don't necessarily disagree, but here's the thing

Unless you plan to eat an entire pound of bacon in one sitting (I mean I could, but I don't), if you leave it just short of crispy, by the time you heat up the bacon in the microwave the next day, it is absolutely PERFECT.

I like your strategy

I have, admittedly, cooked an entire pack of bacon and lied to my wife, claiming I thought she wanted the whole pack cooked for a particular meal, just so I could eat the rest.
I can see how that leftover stuff, just short of crispy, would become perfect in an air fryer the next day.

In 36" gas oven on broil in rest-size dbl pan w/1.5-2 lbs.
Aug 19, 2021, 2:33 PM
|
|
Been doing it that way for 20 years... 8-10 min. first side, 6-8 min. other side and with my oven, generally move the outside pieces to the middle and the middle out during the flip... Saving grease is easier than any other way and cleanup after the pour-off is a wipe, a soak, and a st. steel w/Dawn quick scrub...
The biggest deal is consistency of the bacon brands.... or not.
