I don’t watch Foxnews so I didn’t know anything about him after a brief search: so he divorced his first wife in 2009, married his second wife in 2010 (seems kinda quick), while still marrried to the 2nd woman in 2017 fathered a child with a third woman who was a producer at Foxnews, divorced the 2nd woman, and is now married to the third. Remember when the Republican Party was about family values?

Nether of us are legal or military expert and whether or not his adultery is technically a military crime isn’t even the point. He’s clearly a sack o chit who was appointed by another sack o chit for a role that he’s unworthy of. There are standards of conduct in the military even if they aren’t law and Donny is appointing someone who can’t meet those standards to be over the entire military simply because he says nice things about him on TV.

Seems kind of an odd pick in some ways, but maybe he is a good one. He went to Harvard and Princeton. He fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was an officer. You never know. Might be a good one.

The risks of picking Peter Hegseth to head the Pentagon are too great.
I mean, we could end up with spy balloons flying over the country, disastrous pull-outs from warzones, Russia invading Europe, Iran expanding, and a recruitment crisis.
Best go with another DoD insider.

Maybe I'll pick up his book "The War on Warriors" to see what he is about. The Hegseth pick is decidedly NOT a typical SECDEF pick and not who I would expect. He was a field grade Infantry Officer with multiple combat tours which I count as a plus. I don't know of him having any ties or connections to the Military Industrial Complex, the Pentagon mafia, or The Club (community of active/retired senior flag officers) - all of which is another plus in my book.
He's Ivy League educated so he is probably not a dummy. Does he have the ability to lead a large, bureaucratic organization like the DoD?? Does he have the ability to stare down senior officers who are going to be less than pleased that a former Major and DoD outsider is now their boss?? Does he have a mind for actual strategic military policy and not just battlefield and operational level activities?? I don't know and it must be said that there is great risk with this pick.
IMO we need a SECDEF that will return our military to an absolute apolitical organization where everything, from equipping, training, and manning is solely focused on warfighting. We need a SECDEF that will ensure ALL Pentagon policy decisions are based on increasing the forces lethality. Furthermore, we need a SECDEF who has the will to gut those bureaucratic policies that do nothing but detract from warfighting and force lethality.
Most importantly, we need a SECDEF who will state that the military is NOT a social justice petri dish. The military must rip DEI and it's divisive roots from every nook and cranny from which it grows. The force must return to a state where equal opportunity is ruthlessly enforced so that only one's competence, leadership ability, and performance are the determining factors in military advancement and selection for command.
Can Hegseth do all this?? I don't know but one thing is for sure... Had Trump selected a former General Officer, DoD Senior Service civilian, or politico/MIC Corporate shill - the chances of the DoD remaining a politicized center for DEI studies with a warfighting function would probably be very great.
Maybe Hegseth will be the proverbial bull in the DoD china shop that is needed to get us back to a Pre-GW Bush/Rumsfeld military that doesn't do politics and whose sole focus is on warfighting. Hope springs eternal....

I’m just really hoping he doesn’t nominate Marco Rubio for Secretary of State. He is basically the Republican version of Hillary Clinton. War monger and pro Israel.
My main criticism of Trump has been his pro Israel stance. I’m hoping he just floated Rubio to find leaks in the team. Or to hire him and then fire him so Desantis gets to pick a new Florida senator.

It’s definitely an unusual choice. It could turn out to be a very bad choice or be the change that is needed.
This is a reason recess appointments aren’t wise.
Hegseth needs vetting.
Hopefully this young Pete will be more hands on than Mayor Pete and I suspect this Pete is more in tune with Defense than than Transportation Pete has been with Transportation.
This is indeed an unusual hire, sort of a Dabo hire.
May it turn out as well.

It's bothersome for a few reasons. I know the man is intelligent and I know he's a decorated veteran. Great.
But...
-He mainly got the job because he's been a Fox News loyalist to Trump. That's about it.
-He pushed Trump to release war criminals who have no business being released; that brings question into the kind of policies he'll permit in our military.
-He supports torture, which was a proven failure at Gitmo.
-He's much younger and more inexperienced than the generals and admirals in the Pentagon. That makes me wonder about the relationship he'll have with them.
But the biggest thing:
-The ultimate determination as to whether or not everyone worried about this admin is correct or just overreacting will be what happens to current Pentagon leadership. If it remains intact, we were probably overreacting. If Trump and Hegseth clean house, then this is the start of everything that all of us have been warning about.

not if they are acting positions, as in the case when someone resigns and the president puts in an acting director until the senate can get a confirmation. Scott will never call the hearings, and these will be acting government officials, but permenant.

I can't possibly disagree more. Continuing down the same Pentagon path we have been on will doom our military to mediocrity. The Pentagon and military leadership - including the CJCS - are in dire need of a thorough house cleaning and a refocusing on war fighting.
We have had 20+ years of military and Pentagon leadership whose focus on political and social agendas have run the military woefully off course. I know - I lived it when it crept into the military under the GW Bush and the Obama Administrations.
Whoever eventually becomes the SECDEF (I'm somewhat ambivalent towards Hegseth) must re-establish the primacy of war fighting over all other concerns while instilling a warrior ethos as the spirit and creed of the military. That will require quick sweeping changes to a LOT of the current senior DoD leaders (military and civilian) as they have spent years creating and thriving from this misguided focus towards the political and social agendas.
