Last night wasn't the portal that beat us

As many have clearly pointed out it was the play calling, so predictable. I realize many of are skill players are green, but we need to mix things up, especially a change of pace running back. Mafa is amazing but we need a speedster to stretch the defense too. Run Cade on something beyond 3rd and shot. Some passes over the middle? O-Line looked ahead of last year, no play calling to go along.
Serious question, who is really calling the plays here? It feels like Dabo. I read a very interesting post last night that suggested none of the coaches challenge Dabo since Venables has left - it really feels that Garrett is being handcuffed based on his prior success. What do y'all think? Let's hang in there, we played a tough Georgia team, there is time to turn this thing around! Go Tigers!

Do you feel like that's why the playbook is so limited? Still feel like there has to be more than one carry outside of Mafa right?

have than Cade. I think that was a mistake. I'm not against using the portal altogether, but I am opposed to relying on the portal vs. building with recruiting and development, and to that extent I agree with Dabo completely. Does that mean we should not use the portal at all? No, I don't think so.
I'm sure Cade will have some good games this year against inferior teams, but after yesterday, in my eyes he's clearly a bust, and it's time to start developing somebody else, now, today, or find somebody that can make a difference right away (next year/portal).

not come close to guaranteeing a win nor does it mean you can't win without it. Is Dabo stubborn, and does that hurt us sometimes? Probably so. Could we have upgraded in a few spots with the portal? Probably. Would that have brought us a win yesterday? I don't think so. I think our problems run deeper.

Add FSU to that list, and aTm, and Florida, and SC who eeked out a win against ODU, and West Virginia. The problem ain't the portal. what key player should Dabo have gone for? I guess he could've retrieved DJ again? Bring in any player. Are they gonna succeed under this current scheme? This is a coaching issue.

Not to disagree with a 100%er, but everyone, but us and the service academies, uses the portal and 1/2 of them had to lose. So it would be mathematically impossible for all of them to win.

Cade is not a great quarterback, but this loss wasn’t just on him. Play calling was atrocious. We have no identity on offense. We never threw to the middle of the field except for one to our tight end. We do nothing to keep the defense off balance. There were no screens, reverses, counters, options, etc. Also why did we try to run Mafah wide. He had some success up the gut. I thought Reilly would give us a fresh approach offensively, but it hasn’t happened..Some say that Dabo is running the offense. I’m not sure what the truth is, but we have problems. One thing is for sure: we have more talent than what was shown on the field yesterday. I agree with another poster; the portal did not beat us. It was scheme and play calling.

It IS all about the portal. It’s the reason we don’t have the talent advantage we once had. Not just at QB, but a lot of positions. We have a coach who long ago spoke out against players getting paid. And though he has backed off from that verbally, we still aren’t bringing in portal players. Seems to me more and more kids are not down with a coach making almost 12M a year who isn’t into them getting paid and being allowed to go where ever the opportunity is better for them.

OH PLEASE JUST #### ALREADY ... you people are morons. If we had 2 or 3 portal players what would have changed yesterday, who exactly played so bad that a portal player would have made the difference?
You can have the portal culture or the one we have, I will take the grad rates and quality human beings we have at Clemson.
It takes 2 to execute a portal move... somebody has to want to come to Clemson and Clemson has to have a need...

If Cade is limiting us, why? This is his third year in the program. If he isn’t developing as hoped, that’s on the coaches. And if that’s the case, why don’t we have anyone better to provide another option or at least some legitimate QB competition?
And certainly, if they recognized Cade’s limitations, why wouldn’t they go get someone better from the portal?

From the “Clemson Offense”. Dabo said before the Duke game last year that this will be “Clemson’s Offense” and he wasn’t lying.

that we used to have like Deshaun, Trevor, Mike Williams, Travis Etienne, etc., but we still have plenty of talent at these positions - guys who were high 4-stars and 5-stars who were highly coveted. We should be much better on offense than we have been recently, and that comes down to coaching, development, play calling, etc.
It’s atrocious how much talent we are wasting.

Partially correct. We have talent, maybe not the right talent. Our recruiting has gone down. Hate to say it, we've recruited nice guys and not as many mean guys. One problem is overall team speed on both sides of the ball.
Yes, we have talent, just not anything close to what we used to. Sorry. Facts hurt sometimes and Dabo's stubborn gonna wreck our program.
We'll continue to be a good acc team. One reason why I said in spring, it'd be good to move up to b12.

I know everyone is talking about the offensive woes, but it's coaching all the way around. Offensive and Defensive. Now I'll get slammed on the D, but my nephew just re-watched the game and I (don't completely understand what he's saying) but he told me the first half didn't surprise him. He said he was shocked that Clemson played softer zone on defense and said we never do that... but how did we not seemingly know that uga would figure it out at half... so why didn't we? He thinks the only explanation is we really don't have a seasoned coaching staff, and that's a lot of the difference with a team like uga who has like NFL caliber staff... but while we have talent in some positions, we lack talent and experience in enough areas that we don't have depth. He told me that depth could have been addressed in the portal. That way, we don't have to play games and try to hide our identity, hoping the other teams can't adjust.
The question is why? When we have the money to pay coaching??

UGA saw a weakness at WR in the offseason. The two WR’s who caught TD’s against us yesterday were transfers from Miami (Young) and Vanderbilt (Humphreys), respectively. One of their other leading WR’s in the game (Lovett) was a transfer from Missouri.
The point is, every other program evaluates their roster in the offseason and attempts to acquire talent via the portal to fill talent voids. HS recruiting is and should remain the lifeblood of a program, but refusing to use the portal to address recruiting misses and/or weaknesses is self-induced probation.

If Dabo is limiting him/ calling the plays then NO ….WR sweeps/fake sweeps (what Georgia did) is what we should have done/used to do. Mahfa is great up the middle but .. sweeps to the outside, no … better get it changed up/fixed quick … or it will be more of the same ..
