28 - Gaines Adams Attained a Clemson Record 28 Sacks

Clemson DL Gaines Adams (2003-2006) is forever known for one stunning play. His overall career was also rather jaw-dropping.
Before Clemson:
Gaines Adams played 8-man football in high school. 8-man football seems incredibly different to me. It clearly worked for Gaines Adams. According to Wikipedia:
“Adams was born in Greenwood, South Carolina. He attended Fork Union Military Academy in 2001 and recorded 58 tackles, 22 sacks, and two interceptions in 10 games. He was a three-year starter at Cambridge Academy, a small private school which only had an 8-man football team, where he was a dominant wide receiver and defensive end. His coach during high school was former University of South Carolina quarterback, Steve Taneyhill. In 2000, his team won the state title. During that year, Cambridge shut out four teams, beating one team 80–0.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaines_Adams
While at Clemson:
According to ClemsonTigers.com:
“Adams lettered for the Tigers from 2003-06 and finished his career with 28 sacks, tied for first in school history with Michael Dean Perry. He was named first-team All-American by every service in 2006 when he was also named ACC Defensive Player of the Year. He was second in the overall ACC Player of the Year voting that year to Calvin Johnson of Georgia Tech.
He was also one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award and one of six finalists from the Ted Hendricks Award in 2006 when he had 63 total tackles and 12.5 sacks.”
https://clemsontigers.com/gaines-adams-passes/
Another ClemosnTigers.com article adds the following:
“Adams was only the second unanimous All-American in Clemson history and was voted a first team All-American by all five major news services. He was the ACC defensive player of the year for 2006. He had 12.5 sacks, tops in the ACC, third in the nation and tied for the second most in a single season in school history and set the Clemson record for sacks by a senior. Adams tied the Tigers’ career sack record with 28. He also had a school record streak of eight consecutive games with a sack. He had 63 tackles for the season, his career high and he is second in Clemson history among defensive linemen in pass breakups with 21. He finished his college career with two sacks against Kentucky in the Music City Bowl. He started in each of the last 25 games of his career.”
https://clemsontigers.com/gaines-adams-to-be-honored-by-sc-athletic-hall-of-fame/
For all of those great accolades, Gaines Adams will forever be remembered for an iconic play. In 2006, Wake Forest was leading Clemson 17-3 going into the 4th Quarter and was looking to expand its lead with a field goal. Gaines Adams was nothing short of spectacular in turning the game around with a 66-yard scoop and score:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T-K1Oyg8k4
After Adams cut Wake’s two touchdown lead to one touchdown, the game completely turned. Clemson went on to win 27-17.
His head coach, Tommy Bowden, remembers his big smile and positive attitude. According to the Augusta Chronicle:
“Bowden, who left the Tigers in 2008, said Adams always carried that positive demeanor, even during hot, summer workouts that left most Tigers griping.
"He smiled going down to practice, he smiled at practice, he smiled during stretches, he smiled after practice," Bowden said … "I thought something was wrong with him."”
After Clemson:
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Gaines Adams with he 4th Pick (1st Round) of the 2007 NFLDraft. According to Wikipedia:
“He signed a six-year deal with the Buccaneers on July 26, 2007, worth $46 million, with $18.6 million guaranteed.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaines_Adams
Adams was traded to the Chicago Bears in October 2009. Pro-Football-Reference.com provides Adams NFL statistics:
Gaines Adams (2007-2009: Buccaneers, Bears): - 93 Tackles (67 Solo, 26 Assisted) - 13 Tackles for Loss - 1 Fumble Recovery - 2 Interceptions Returned for 50 Yards (Average 25.0 Yards) - 1 Interception Return for a Touchdown
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/A/AdamGa99.htm
Tragically, Gaines Adams passed away in January 2010. He had an enlarged heart.
We miss you, Mr. Adams!!!

South Carolina Highway 28 is a 131.2-mile-long state highway that runs from the west end at SR 28 at the Georgia line near Mountain Rest to the east end at SR 28 at the Georgia line near Clark's Hill, going through Walhalla, Seneca, Clemson, Pendleton, Anderson, Antreville, Abbeville, McCormick, Plum Branch, Parksville, and Modoc. Christian/crossover rock band Needtobreathe is from Seneca.
SC 28 begins and ends on the South Carolina/Georgia border with the west end on the Chattooga River and the east end on the Savannah River. The 301-mile-long Savannah River is a major southeastern U.S. river forming much of the SC/GA border. The Savannah was formed by the confluence of the Tugaloo and Seneca rivers which is now part of Lake Hartwell. The Savannah flows out of Hartwell below Hartwell Damm. The river goes through Augusta and passes Savannah, Georgia, where it becomes an estuary before entering the Atlantic Ocean. Besides Hartwell, two other man-made lakes on the Savannah are Russell and Thurmond/Clarks Hill. The Savannah River watershed drains 10,577 square miles starting in the mountains of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia near Ellicott Rock where the three states meet.
