Hunter Renfrow - Market Value

Jan 10, 2022, 11:04 AM

There have been a lot of posts recently about 3rd & Renfrow and his current rookie contract. He's on a 4-year, $2.8M contract that fits for a 5th round pick in the 2019 NFL draft. Next season is his 'contract year' and he can expect his second contract to be sizable.

Here's his current contract details: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/las-vegas-raiders/hunter-renfrow-29197/

There is a lot to read up on regarding the 2011 NFL collective bargaining agreement, but the short take is this: Rookie contracts got screwed. They are very low and not a lot can be done about that. Rookie contracts cannot even be revisited until the conclusion of the 3rd year. For those that are paying attention, we are just about at the end of Renfrow's 3rd year. So, the Raiders *COULD* make a new deal with Renfrow in the off-season. But will they?

Spotrac does a good job of estimating a players actual value based on that player's performance. Where does Renfrow stand right now? Spotrac thinks his contract should be 5 years, $68M. Hunter Renfrow is worth about 15 times what he's getting paid. If Renfrow was an unrestricted Free Agent right now, his agent would be shopping those numbers around to teams in need of a productive slot receiver. He wouldn't have to look very hard to find a line of suitors.

Here's the Spotrac market value analysis: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/las-vegas-raiders/hunter-renfrow-29197/market-value/

The Raiders can elect to do nothing this off-season with Renfrow's contract. They can even take the 5th year option if they wanted, further pushing that 2nd contract down the road. Depending on a number of factors (like Pro Bowl selections for Renfrow), they may decide to do that.

If I had to guess, I'd say the Raiders get something done at the end of the 2022 season. If Renfrow has another 1,000 yard season, he will get a massive paycheck from somebody in 2023 and the Raiders know that. For now, I think the Raiders are patting themselves on the back for making such an outstanding 5th round pick in the 2019 draft.

just hope Carr doesn't go elsewhere or a new coach doesn't

ruin the chemistry. I could totally see a Harbaugh totally screwing up the Chemistry there.

I can't really argue against rookie contracts being low

Jan 10, 2022, 11:50 AM

compared to veterans. The old way, to me, was just insanity. Kids right out of college were breaking the bank, without ever having set FOOT on an NFL field.

Now, having said that, I also believe that rookie contracts could, and should be structured such that there are significant $$$ rewards for exceeding certain set levels of performance.

I agree with this structure of a Rookie contract more than anything out there. Bring them in on a budget deal, but as soon as they prove themselves as a legit NFL player, contacts should/must be renegotiated BC, 4 season is to long of a time for an NFL team to get the use out of a Rookie like the use that the Raiders are getting out of Renfrow, and nobody knows when that career ending injury will come that actually screws them out of their entire NFL career.

It is very hard to think about how the players union could have accepted any pisspoor agreement like what a Rookie player has to play under for 4 full years in a business that could retire them in their first NFL practice. Rookies should go on strike against their own players union, bc a rookie contract is total bulllshittt. Any Rookie that can make an NFL 2nd team, they should receive a 2nd teamer going salary for the position that they play, IMO, anything less is employer discrimination only bc the player just came out of college, and that is what it all boils down to. BC you are young, even though you can play down per down beside a veteran doesn't mean you are worth the same is total bulllshittt!!!

I agree with the lower annual money on rookie contracts as well.

You have to remember that the higher round picks also get a nice hefty signing bonus to add to their rookie contract.

The only part I disagree with is that a team can lock down the player at the low value for 5 years while the team also has the freedom to release or cut the player at any point in that 5 years without penalty.

If the contracts are going to be structured at 5 years, then there should be 3-4 years of guaranteed money for the players who are signing those long contracts.

OR

Teams should have to pick between a 2-3 year deal with no guaranteed money or a longer deal where the player is guaranteed almost all of the money owed. This would make teams have to rely on their scouting to determine how they think the player will progress in the first couple of years. Risk losing a great pick after a couple of years or risk the player not panning out and still owing money on the longer contract.

Football players have a small window to make their money and being stuck for 5 years with no bargaining power really decreases the likelihood of a second contract for most of the guys coming into the league.

I wouldn't count our guy out of being an All-Pro QB

Jan 10, 2022, 1:01 PM

if that is what he wanted to be . . . .

"Can't" isn't in his playbook.

Amazing.

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

Oh for sure there’s a chance he would’ve made it!***
