How to handle conference championship games and the CFP??

Nov 30, 2016, 3:51 PM

I'm no guru or anything, but it seems that some conferences having championship games and others not isn't a very equitable way to do things as far as the CFP goes. Would it make sense to use the rankings for entry into the playoff at the end of the REGULAR SEASON and just have the conference championship games for posterity's sake? Your thoughts?

No. Just give automatic to conferences that have

a championship game. All others would have to be voted into the 8-team playoff. No more than 2 teams from any conference. This rewards teams that actually earn the championship on the field, and allows voters to reward teams they think are better than those who earned it.

The reason I bring up using the regular season as the indicator is because just as not having to play an extra game is unfair if you're already in, teams on the bubble without a league championship game could say it was unfair for others to get an automatic bid if they win their championship, because they didn't have that opportunity.

The only way to make it totally fair would be to cut it off at the end of the regular season when everyone has played the same number of games.

We will never have a fair system as long as they money is a factor. Strangely like politics. I guess it IS politics. BS You would think that some of these career football people would value the thrill of sport and fairness above all instead of selling out. Bunch of #### hacks.

Good luck getting a straight answer out of the CFP committee

I believe the head of the committee said that conference championships are not weighted more heavily than record or strength of schedule. So it basically can only serve to hurt you. If OSU were in the Big 10 championship and lost would it boot them out of the top 4? Who knows, but the fact that they don't have to play another game BECAUSE they lost a game and still have the opportunity to take a spot from a team that has seems completely illogical. It's just like last year when Stanford got snubbed in favor of Oklahoma (who didn't have to play a championship game). Conference title game champion Stanford (small fanbase) or Oklahoma (large fanbase). I think the committee looks at the top 6 or so and says, "Which fanbases are going to bring in the most money?" They'll pick their top 4 based on fanbases and regional locations of the games and then say something like, "The space between teams 3 and 6 is only separated by thin margins, but we feel like team [blah, blah, blah] deserves it." Translation: they will make us more money in the playoffs.
