Carrying a pack of about 35 pounds up and down hills was unlike anything I've ever done before. It kicked my butt.
I'm definitely going to go again....but it will be with some changes. There are a lot of things in that pack I could have done without, that I was ready to throw off the mountain.

I've got a 45L, and don't have the luxury of bringing "unnecessary items"...then again, I've only recently done colder weather camping, so I've got more/bigger clothes (I sound fat) and a 20 deg bag...
those things KINDA take up some room

I bought a big (I mean BIG) pack off of craigslist. It is a 90+15 (105 liter) pack.
The lady who fit me for it at REI said she had never seen one that big in a VERY long time.
I bought big, thinking that if I went with my son, I'd be carrying more of the stuff, and I'd need the extra space.
I had it down to only 32 pounds (before water) but it was still very heavy.
I didn't take my phone (camera).

that's for....what, smuggling messicans??? I mean, I doubt i'd go more than 2 fairly minimalist nights w/ mine, realistically just one night (which is all I've done, w/ a bunch strapped to the outside...
I think a 65L (maybe even 55+10) is in my nearish future...I couldn't imagine needing more
...and 32lbs is heavy?? that there, is a serious Q...

35 pounds was comfortable walking a straight line. Ascending mountains was tough. I guess just not used to it.

A lot of hikers myself included are going with low top hiking shoes.
Unless I'm heading to the Grand Canyon for a week, I'd probably look at low tops or hybrids. Lighter, supportive ( thought not like trad boot) and many will dry out over tonight.
Check the trail guide re; creek crossings too. One could be pretty comfortable with low tops and slap on a pair of gaiters on wet days or traverses.

Gore tex is a pretty old product... The outdoor industry is always looking for better technology. Products that weigh less, wick and breath better, and water proof better.
Here are products that have achieved that:
The latest and greatest NEOSHELL, developed by Polar tec about 3-4 years ago. Neoshell breaths much better which reduces that clamy feel from gore tex. It is water proof and has feels more like soft shell than a nylon, so it is more comfortable as well.
eVent is another very good product. eVent is water proof and for a while breathed better than anything, until Neoshell was introduced.
GM bought the company and eventually dropped financing and many companies pulled away. Proprietary rules have changed and now Mountain Hardware and others use eVent, but have renamed it for their own products.
At one time the US Army conducted its own studies to determine which product water proofs and breaths the best. Their studies indicated that eVent kicked that others to the curb. So they wanted their jackets to use eVent. ( At the time that study was conducted, about 5 years ago, Neoshell was still in the lab and not on the market. So it wan't tested. Imo, Neoshell breaths better than eVent and they both water proof better than Gore Tex.
Long story short, some boot companies are using other products not only in jackets but footwear. Outdry, eVent are showing up in more footwear. Plus it isn't a bootie like goretex so it should weigh less.
It usually cost more, but a nice steak cost more than a hamburger at the burger chain.
