How mayny of you old codgers remember when you went back

12

Aug 6, 2023, 12:42 PM

to school in late August.....and the air conditioning was turned on when you OPENED THE WINDOWS and the teacher hit the switch on about a 24 to 30 inch fan FOR THE WHOLE room.....I am thinking I was in about the 5th or 6t grade before the school was air conditioned....

I remember it well.

I think I only went to one school, 9-11 grade, with air conditioning. (And, I went to school is south GA and Bama for all but 3 of the 12 years I was in school.)

We had no air-conditioning (except for the library) in elementary school. I was lucky enough to go to a brand new middle school, so we had AC there. When I got to high school we only had AC in the library and one new section of the school. It was miserable, but we didn't know any better.
The Temps were just as hot in the 60s and 70s as they are now.

Finished high school in N. Charleston and when the wind was wrong not only had heat, but the paper mill odor.

No problem now - all the schools have AC and the paper mill just closed for good after 86 years of operation.

I'm 68 years old and I don't ever remember having AC while in schooluntil I got to Clemson in '72. I remember holding my head where my sweat wouldn't hit the paper and smear it. I thought I dreamt this up.

How about Johnstone? Only had either heat or cool. If had cold snap they couldn't convert to heat from power plant for like 2days, once you had heat it would get hot outside again and it took 2 days to get cool register again. That was awesome, miss those days.

Is the power plant gone now? Seems like I recall it being decommissioned.

No a/c till 11 and 12 grade. We pulled tobacco till the day before we went back to school…after school…and everyday we were out of school. Labor Day was a two barn day trying to get ahead. No excuses for school or going to field.

When I turned 11 years old, my sister and i started delivering newspapers in our neighborhood. I had to get up 7 days a week at 4:30 in the morning. Started out delivering on my bike, rain or shine, until my sister turned 15. We then used my dad's VW bug until my sister went away to college. I bought my 1st car on my 15th birthday and got a 2nd paper route. I did that until I turned 18 and left for Clemson. I wouldn't trade it for anything. It taught me responsibility, how to conduct business, and deal with people.

We never had any AC at school when I attended. I think I remember some of my classes were not either. Now there’d be a mutiny.

No AC in grades 1-5, brand new middle school had AC

2

Aug 6, 2023, 1:36 PM

in grades 6-8, then I went to an old HS with no AC in 90% of the buildings. As best as I can remember, we typically had orientation just before Labor Day, then started full schedule after Labor Day, and it was hot as hades.

No a/c at all when I was in school. We started school the day after Labor Day. Library only in high school and went into military and no a/c in barracks either. Was in San Antonio in June through October and the only a/c was in the theaters and some class rooms when he had to spend an hour or so in class. When I finally got to permanent duty station then I had a/c.

No A/C for 5th-9th grade, but what we did have was……teachers and principals with sawed off boat oars, drilled for aerodynamics….and they were famous for using them.

1st-6th grades with no air condition. Junior high 7th and 8th grades with AC (school was only about 3 years old. High school was mixed, the “old building” was very hot in the afternoons. The newer sections had AC. But, I was use to it, didn’t have AC at home until I was a teenager and then only window units. My parents had an addition built in the attic. My younger sisters shared a bedroom down stairs and I had the “oven” upstairs. Still wouldn’t trade my upbringing for nothing!!

AC in Oconee in the 50s and 60s? Are you kidding?

Actually the new high school opened in fall of 69 with AC but a contractor issue put them behind and no AC for most of the first month. Kids today have absolutely no clue.

Never had A/C the whole time I was in school. The thing I remember was the heat was steam radiators. Never failed that someone would pee on it and make the rest of the bathroom unusable for about an hour. If you ever smelled it, you would never forget it.

Different subject, but when I tell people from work from other parts of the country about the community showers and toilet stalls with no doors in Johnstone, they look at me like I’m from Mars. The only good thing I remember about community showers in Johnstone was you would get the occasional hungover girl come in to take a shower.

I did have one coworker who went to college in New Hampshire tell me about how they used to straddle the top of the toilet stalls and let fly with poop bombs into the toilet below.

In Johnstone the year they installed the window clips. These limited the windows to about a six inch opening because someone had fallen off the ledges. But the downside for us was the AC wasn’t on yet and we were trying to sleep in 85 degree temperatures. Any one recall that?

Memories from that time are a little hazy but I think the new school we started attending in 7th grade had AC. My parents started putting window units in our house about the same time. The first units went in the den and in their bedroom. I got a window unit in my bedroom when I was in probably the 9th or 10th grade. This was on Johns Island. As someone said in another post, we didn’t know any better. Until I was in college I couldn’t fall asleep unless I was sweating.

No AC I think the library in middle school had window AC unit . Didn't have any at home . Center block house . I remember when we got our 1st ceiling fan . Screen doors front and back door . Collapsible screens in the windows. Thank God for the large Oak tree that provided shade over the house.

My HS in Florida late 80’s didn’t have central AC

Aug 7, 2023, 4:53 PM

The library, auditorium, basketball gym, and admin offices - yes.

Very open with lots of breezeways between classrooms. We were on the other side of A1A on the east coast so the ocean breezes sometimes helped. Our HS had outgrown the population so we had a bevy of “portables” on the edge of campus. In more moderate climates, I think the portable/temporary buildings would be looked down upon.

But those things had the coldest AC. When you scored a class in one of those …..
