Dabo's "No one will have more money than Clemson" comment

To clarify what he said, he means due to the cap on rev share no one will have more to spend than Clemson. Not that Clemson will have more than everyone else.

With that said, I don't understand how this changes anything? NIL will still be a thing. It will have to go through a clearing house but it will still be a thing. How, then, does rev share put us on equal footing? Especially considering that we don't even push 110 Society outside of IPTAY circles.

The 110 Society facebook page has 46 likes for pete sake. And the website looks like it was designed by a 6th grade computer class. We still have to get serious about NIL, rev share or not.

I think it’s a hint that we will allocate near 100% or actually 100% to football. Which if we do give 100% to football there is going to be backlash from inside the athletic department

That's the way I took it as well.

And I agree with you that it may cause problems.

I just don't see this as some sort of solution when other elite programs will be paying 75-100% of revshare to football AND doling out NIL deals, albeit legit promotional deals. We will still have to play the NIL game to compete.

Even so, Clemson will have to be different to be elite, just like we were from 2015 to 2020. Dabo directed us on that different path then, I think he will find a similar path forward once the dust clears on this.

if everyone is given the "same handout" w/ the ~$21mil in rev share.......

then all that really does is inflates the NIL market even more than it already is and in the grand scheme of things creates no real advantage one way or another from school to school..............if I'm understanding that correctly.........?.........

That's the way I understand it too

But if there is truly going to be a clearing house that certifies NIL deals as truly promotional engagements then that will at least tamp it down some but not much. There's nothing stopping boosters who own businesses to throw money at players for promotional gigs regardless of a true ROI.

That clearing house will have a hard time surviving this.

Getting people to stroke big checks is not a matter of branding. It's more a matter of creating value around an idea.

I know because my family is wealthy and gives generously both to the foundation and athletics. And while we have given pretty generously to NIL up to this point both for football and basketball, none of us are willing to go in whole hog just yet. Because we're not sure how it'll be spent, because it's too opaque. It's the wild west.

Which is why we roll our eyes at people insisting Dabo Swinney should just go out and buy a bunch of three-star portal athletes hoping they'll play like five-stars, using our money. That's a lousy business model. Unsustainable.

Maybe. Dabo spoke on it extensively at his press conference. Being that he has a direct line to the Athletic Director, I’m willing to bet he knows much more about the subject than you or I.
He’s saying at a game changer and in other words, leveling the playing field. He said that NIL will have standards and regulations monitored by a 3rd party.
UCF just cancelled their NIL collective. I believe other schools will do the same once the legislation is passed. Boosters won’t be allowed to just pile money into a collective anymore from the sound of things. I don’t claim to understand it all.

UCF is conflating an in house NIL collective with the House settlement.

No other school has to do that.
The best funded ones won't.

There is no current legislation that will stop private business deals. Even an antitrust exemption can't do that. Both Congress and the federal courts are adamant about that. Its even less likely with an anti regulation White House and Congress coming up in January.

He basically quoted this page from Clemson athletics. Maybe it’s all speculation. I highly doubt the athletic department is lying to its fans and boosters.

It stems from the NCAA conflating school NIL

with the revenue sharing clause in the House case settlement.

I think they are doing that to intentionally confuse people and intimidate some schools away from private NIL collectives.

The settlement is not final.
Some athletes and NIL collectives are challenging the NIL oversight clause on antitrust and interstate commerce friends.

That clause also conflicts with the injunction in the Tennessee vs NCAA case, which prevents the NCAA from interfering in private NIL. The judge in that case has stated that Tennessee (the state) is likely to win on the merits of the case.

In that case, a decision in one federal case trumps a settlement in another federal case, if I'm not mistaken.

It's difficult to understand without doing a bunch of research and staying current.
It also helps to have friends and family who are attorneys.

Well I guess I’m getting excited over nothing. The current NIL situation is bs imo. So is unrestricted free agency. I guess the players would have to become employees of the schools to see real change. More of an NFL model I guess. Then recruiting would cease to exist and we’d have a highschool draft

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How, exactly, will that survive in court without

Even larger and wealthier programs will be impacted with the financial outlays that just that element will elicit - not as much extra to plop down in NIL after filling in these gaps. Add in a more structured oversight of NIL to better legitimize that throughout, and it will serve to better level the financial playing field at this level. There will still be gaps but they will be narrower and more in line with what was kind of in place prior to NIL - paper bags, parental job offers, etc.

Now that an Ole Miss is going to have to pony up an additional $15 Million annually, like everyone else at this level, for player compensation, will their boosters still have another $15 Million to pour on top to buy players to try and win a championship like they did this year? IMO that's the basic concept behind its benefits for a program not as well funded or budgeted as ours.

For example, a car dealer can give thousands to a player, and then the player shows up on a single Saturday to sign autographs as a sales 'promotion'. The 3rd party can't control a business having an event to generate more traffic, or to generate 'Good Will' for the company. There will always be work arounds. Who has more car dealers SC, OH, MI, FL, or CA ?

I just don't see how rev share solves our problem without changing philosophy and getting creative with NIL.

Will NIL becomes less of the wild west? Maybe. But it will still be a wild west nonetheless.
