How did Clemson rise to the top of college football?

The short answer- Dabo Swinney.
What was different about Dabo Swinney? His value system. He recruited people first and talent second. He didnt offer every 4 and 5 star guy in the country. He recruited players who he thought would fit our culture. He recruited players until they graduate. He is a man of his word.
Will Dabo Swinney change his values because of the transfer portal and NIL? No. His core values will never change. And thank God for that. He will adapt to the changed environment. His adaptation will be transparent and justifiable. Trust him to do the right thing.
I do.

No doubt. Dabo is the driver. However, a key part of that ascent was him going out and hiring the best coaches he could get at that time to fix stuff that was broken. Morris when our offense was anemic. Venables when our D was getting roasted by spread offenses. Hobby and Brooks for DL. Reed for DB's. These guys had pretty strong resumes before hitting Tigertown and contributed just a wee bit to our stratospheric success. The only 2 coaches left on that list are Venables and Reed. I would contend that they are our 2 best coaches on staff now based on recruiting, evaluation and player performance.

Exactly. And to follow up on your point, the recent hires

have been underwhelming in terms of their resumes.
Don't get me wrong, it's great to bring in good people who are former Clemson players, but in hindsight it seems that we could've brought in more qualified coaches in some instances.

core values.
People here have trusted Dabo completely during our playoff run. 99% of people here still trust him, but you can't blame people for asking questions and voicing concerns when the rails have completely fallen off this year compared to preseason expectations.
I personally don't see how using the transfer portal more and making some overdue staff changes would in any way compromise Dabo's values. This simply means bringing in transfer players who are hard workers, good students, and upstanding citizens. It also means treating coaches with respect while holding them accountable for results.
Don't forget that Dabo's values also include a commitment to Clemson University and the football program he coaches. When that program is underachieving, as it has this year, he has an obligation to fix it. I believe he will, even if he isn't exactly sure what that looks like at this point.
The true litmus test will be during the offseason. Will things basically stay the same, with a promise that "we're working hard" and "we will get better," or will there be significant changes?

Its about adopting to the change in landscape. ALL great leaders do it....and I have zero doubt, based on what I know, that Dabo will do it again like he had to earlier in his career....

Thank goodness you aren't the coach. People kneejerking and listening to media hype too much. Down year for sure and plenty has gone wrong. Thankfully we have the right leader in place to make decisions.

Who's asking him to change his core values?

about 1/3 of a recruiting class worth of his "people first" recruits have transferred out of Clemson each year for the last 3-4 years............and that's not a knock on Dabo, it's happening EVERYWHERE............he has to adapt though.
It's simple if he wants to sustain.....or get back to where we were in 2016-2018..........and it has nothing to do with changing his core values.

the majority of roster must be compromised of 4 & 5 *'s to have a shot at winning the CFP...

To win it, you'll likely need a 1 or more difference makers and they'll likely be 5*s but no less than a 4*-if you want to cite HR as a difference maker fine, but he is an anomaly and we'll never see another walk-on have his impact at any position for another 50 yrs minimum.

Yup. Renfro, Williams, Scott, and that quarterback before Watson.

He has always said he recruits great people who happen to be good football players. You got it backwards.

You have to be a great player, but if you have character issues, he won't take you and will back off. They start going after the great players though. The staff wouldn't even have their jobs without great talent. Believe me, he can find tons of players who are great people. He finds the great talent first and then they recruit for a long time and make sure the character is there. They have to fit into the culture of he program. He can't have any cancers on the team.
