Hope our Offensive co-coordinators

Sep 29, 2015, 7:25 AM

Have a great game plan for ND, if they don't, some seats are going to get real hot, real fast. We are missing Chad Morris' creative playbook and I just hope they can do the job. So far, I am underwhelmed by their play calling. They've got a lot of weapons, they just need to know how to use them.

that by this point in Coach Swinney's tenure at Clemson, every Tiger fan would realize that if you give him extra time to prepare for a big game (or bowl), his teams will be incredibly prepared and motivated

and I've grown quite confident in B. Venable's ability to have his defense ready to rock.

The OP is about the co-OCs

Sep 29, 2015, 7:58 AM

BV is incredible.

I dislike the idea of cutting our teeth on two Inexperienced OCs given the rarity of a guy like DW4 so part of me agrees with the OP. It's obvious our play calling has been simpler by design. We don't know though if it will be dynamic like before with Chad.

Expecting our OCs will easily out coach ND is too much koolaid for me as well. No doubt we have the players to put up points. I hope Clemson unloads!

I agree about the last part you said. Like them or not, ND has excellent coaches on both sides of the ball.

Seriously, someone take his "man" card away. I guess we should have opened up our play book against wofford and app state so we too can run up 62 points on a cupcake like umass. Idjit.

Chance to get game experience with Wofford and App State which is exactly what you do to prep the team for the journey. The only game where the O looked shaky was on the road, short week, night game, hostile territory, against top 10 D and first game without Williams (on a short week again).

Context is very important here.

Folks need to have a little faith. Geez... ??

UL isn't even top 50

Let's not inflate the talent of a 1-3 team. UL has great DTs but they aren't a top 10 defensive unit.

Re: Hope our Offensive co-coordinators

Sep 29, 2015, 7:54 AM

After this game we will truely know what we have in Scott and Elliot. They will have to use it all in order to win this game, IMO. Obviously against wofford and app st the playbook was closed. Against Louisville they took what the defense was giving them. Not overly creative or flashy, but just enough to win, which works with me. This is just my personal opinion, but I hope they use more misdirection and pre snap motion like chad morris did. It shows matchups and makes the defense have more to think about pre snap, which gives our offense more of an advantage. They didn't do this against Louisville, but that's not to say they won't do it against ND and other teams. Time will tell. But after this game, we will know exactly what we have with our new play callers.

No bubble screens! Use TEs instead... Get speed downfield

Sep 29, 2015, 8:03 AM

to keep the D honest and open it up for RBs and TEs and DW....

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Biggest complaint on bubble screen is

Sep 29, 2015, 8:05 AM

It allows the D's speedy DBs to stay up near the line and make a break on the receiver or ball before it gets to the receiver, thus lessening their ability to run after the catch. It assumes the receiver can catch it and make the DB miss the tackle, but he DB is in full on attack mode as the ball is going to the WR.

I don't like it at all.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yet teams have been playing 10 yards off the WR's ?

Sep 29, 2015, 8:53 AM

Seems you haven't got a clue as to what you're typing about, it shows.

Re: Hope our Offensive co-coordinators

Sep 29, 2015, 9:25 AM

From what I've seen so far, they haven't been out-coached so let's trust them until it happens. Petrino and Stoops are both known as pretty good coaches and have been around the block a couple of times. If not for a couple of drops, kickoff return for a TD, and our QB being a little off, we beat Louisville by three touchdowns.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What is underwhelming about it??

Sep 29, 2015, 9:26 AM

The other team plays their corners back and 2 deep safeties over the top to take away the deep play. This means you do what we did, run it, quick wr screen, or throw underneath (stick routes, rb, te outs where the outside wr runs clears the coverage out). This does 2 things, gets easy yards and makes the defense consider bringing their coverage up opening up the deep stuff.

What would you do, have our qb continuously throw deep balls into double coverage?

If not for a play here or there (incomplete pass to TE, Gallman drop, DW getting tripped up) and the kick return, we win that game by 2+ tds.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Several things...

Sep 29, 2015, 9:51 AM

- Tempo is slow (maybe by design)
- Play calling is predictable (granted we're undefeated currently)
- We are winning on talent vs scheme
- ND has equal talent to Clemson and so this game will come down to coaching and execution
- Like you mentioned, execution was a little sloppy against UL (a team not as talented as ND)
- Mike Williams is hurt (our best WR)
- While we whipped UL on the field, the game was close.
- We didn't win by 2+ tds, we won given they couldn't hit a field goal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

what

Sep 29, 2015, 10:55 AM

-tempo is slow- we snapped the ball until the end of the game with 25 + sec on the play clock
- play calling is going to be predictable when they are giving you certain plays (screen/underneath passes) or playing a pass defense dictating for you to run. You are going to do one or the other and we mixed it up with both. Which goes to your next point. You are right, our talent is dictating the defensive scheme to play on their heels to protect the deep play which is what gives us the running/underneath game and we executed it. Thats actually a compliment to our team that they were forcing us to do something and we still did it.
-true, we will have to execute better on the gimme stuff. Although with ND playing press, I think we'll see more downfield stuff.
- UL defense isnt their main problem, its the offense not scoring and continuously leaving their defense out there. I think UL is only an avg team, and may not end up with the best record, but will be in every game they play. They are not going to be blown out. A well coached team finds a way to make it close and I think you will see this from Petrino all season win or lose. Again we will need to execute a little better, but that has nothing to do with the play call, which is what the original post was about.
-again MW being hurt doesnt have anything to do with the original post on underwhelming playcalling
-you cant negate my point that we could have won by 2+ tds with saying we won cause they couldnt hit a fg. Would of, could of, should of has to go both ways. Cant count one for one team and not the other. If they could of hit the fg, well if we could have done any of the things I mentioned, that fg wouldnt have even mattered.

Again the post was about play calling, not execution. Yes, we will need to execute to win, but the play calls were there and for the most part were good
