Macon, Ga is nowhere near as slummy as Columbia, SC. However, the UGA faithful in mid-state Georgia are some serious whacko's....

I have rarely pulled off the Interstate in Macon over the last 40 years or so......spent a decade there one summer and I'll NEVER live in Bibb County again. The Ocmulgee runs through the middle of town, its the home of Sydney Lanier--and these are supposedly the GOOD things about the place. If Phil Walden hadn't put that studio in the rundown industrial warehouse section of downtown Macon, I'd have never stayed--as it was, you could walk into the Scarlet Garter any night of the week and run into some remarkable musicians in town recording.

I sincerely hope Macon's been cleaned up and pleasantly gentrified--but I'll never find out.....and believe me, there are only a few places Columbia ranks higher in the "Livability Poll" than
