So let me get this straight

S.Carolina just fired one of, if not the best baseball coach in the country from far and away their best program and in the process hired a completely inexperienced AD, who will probably have to make at least two huge coaching hires during his tenure.
Sure... Sounds like a great plan. Good job chicks..

in waiting.
Football is another story.
The real question is his inexperience in other areas of program-wide administration.

Not trying to defend the chickens, but they were in a no-win scenario. If they did not promote Tanner, he would be coaching at Texas next year, and beating SUC (if they ever sniff at Omaha again). Glad that good thing has come to an end. May they never win another championship at anything.

You make some good points. I definitely don't want Jack L as our A.D. Bobby Cox was not a good GM for the Braves but he was a hell of a manager...

Question: Other than Tom Osbourne

Have there/are there any other prominent coaches that moved up to being an AD at the same school? If so, were they successful? The Huskers haven't won a BCS game since Osbourne left, I believe, and I can't think of any other big-time coaches of the big three sports that have done squat as an AD.

From what I've heard here in trashlumbia, the money is about the same. Take away the incentives, there will be a huge pay cut.

On the surface it looks like a risky move. But it is all about leadership. Holbrook is a bigger risk as hed bseball coach than Tanner at AD in my opinion. Tanner is a leader that has vision and can see that vision through. He also has a great relationship with President Pastides, which is the most important aspect of being an AD.
I wish Tanner wanted to caoch baseball for another 25 years. No one can replace him, but Holbrook was instrumental in UNC going to two National Champoinship games and was also very instrumental in our team going and winning. It has yet to be seen if that translates to him being an excellent head coach. Only time will tell.
It was the right move since Tanner wanted the job. He has earned that right at our University.

obviously, tanner will have to hire some business people to help him out. still, he was very involved in the whole process of getting the new baseball stadium. he also had a position as liason between coaches and administrators. pastides gave him that position just to get his hands in things and get him some experience since everyone knew he was going to be AD. I really like the hire. What we need now more than anything is someone who is intensely competitive and loves the school. the funds will be there. we need someone willing to make sure its funnelled into our programs. no doubt ray will do that. he will be an excellent fundraiser and of course the sec keeps us set pretty well financially anyways. he will hire finance people and he will be the ceo and face of the department. he has proven himself to be a great leader and has always made great hires. maybe there are some people who will make better ADs based on experience but i think ray is the perfect fit for us. most elitely successful people can be successful at multiple things. i think ray is one of those people who will be good at whatever he does. he just happened to be a baseball coach.

you just trimmed the list at "loves the school", may i suggest perry correctional, or any other penal facility in the state. seems most of that ilk is incarcerated, so those instituitions would be the logical place to start, heck, who knows, it is probably better than what you are used to,anyway. and what is this "liason" of which you speak, are you telling me he was just an ### kisser, that is what they are called, right? the way you are describing him, well, i have one question, can he walk on water, too?

You'd have to be an absolute FOOL to not think losing Eric Hyman is a big deal. He has done more for SC athletics than...well...anyone. Losing Ellis Johnson is big, too. Can you guys rebound/progress without them? Possibly. But this is a lot of upheaval at one time.
And please...don't give me this '3 in a row' crap. One of those years (2009) we were clearly and obviously the better team but you won, which was invalidated by losing to UConn, and then in 2010 we flat out sucked. Kudos for last year but don't get used to it. Enjoy this streak for what it is but don't expect it to be constant, because it won't be.
