34 - Clemson and Maryland Score 34 Points (17-17) without a Head Coach on the Fi

Clemson and Maryland played to a 17-17 tie in 1986. The game clinched the ACC Championship for the Good Guys. The game was most noteworthy, however for being the first (and I assume only) college football game played without a head coach on the field.
ClemsonTigers.com described the game as follows:
Nov. 15, 1986 Clemson tied Maryland 17-17 to win the ACC championship, as Treadwell kicked a 20-yard field goal with two seconds left. Both Clemson coach Danny Ford and Maryland coach Bobby Ross coached the game from the press box due to suspensions imposed by the ACC.
Clemson Head Coach Danny Ford: Suspended for this Game One Season Earlier:
During the 1985 Maryland at Clemson game, Dany Ford shared his perspectives with the officials on their calls. Key calls that affected the outcome of the game. Let’s just say that Coach Ford was less eloquent and more colorful in his approach to sharing his views with these officials.
Ford was put on probation and suspended for the 1986 Clemson at Maryland game.
And what call was Coach Danny Ford upset about? This “touchdown” call: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99SE038rmfk
Here is the video of Danny arguing. Note that does not physically touch or threaten an official: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFKXOwEORBo
Maryland Head Coach Bobby Ross: Suspended for this Game Two Weeks Earlier:
Whereas Coach Ford simply used his words, Coach Ross actually put his hands on a referee in a game against UNC. He was suspended for Maryland game upcoming game against Clemson – but he was not put on probation for a year.
As Sports Illustrated described it:
“The press box was the penalty box during Saturday's Bad Boy Bowl at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. For raging vigorously and vulgarly at officials during last year's game against Maryland, Clemson coach Danny Ford was spanked by the ACC: He received a year's probation and was told that he couldn't be on the field when the two teams met this season. And because he grabbed a referee after the 32-30 loss to North Carolina two weeks ago, Maryland coach Bobby Ross received a similar scolding: The ACC said he must not be on the sideline the next time the Terps played a league opponent. So, for the first time in college football history, both coaches were banished before the opening kickoff.”
https://vault.si.com/vault/1986/11/24/scorecard
So Ford yelled harshly at officials over a questionable (to put it nicely) late in a game while Ross physically grabbed an official. Yep – That seems similar enough to warrant the same punishment.
Player Perspective:
According to Sports Illustrated:
“Clemson wide receiver Ray Williams voiced the opinion of all the players when he said he would miss his coach "if I run the kickoff all the way back. But if I get a penalty or make a stupid mistake, then I'd rather have him up in the press box."
https://vault.si.com/vault/1986/11/24/scorecard
As for the Game:
Again, according to SI:
“The press boxes—Ford's on the 30-yard line and Ross's on the 50—took on the look of mission control, with wires and headsets everywhere. Seven lieutenants surrounded Ford, and five kept Ross company. But life in the bunker did not make General Ford bold. On the last play of the game, with the ball on the Maryland four, the Tigers opted to kick a field goal that gave them a 17-17 tie and sewed up the ACC title.”

Thanks tonjtiger1® for this clip of the two had coaches in the press box: https://media2.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExa3c3amQwcG80aHA4eXJ0ZjlyYTR3NTI0MWllM25iendnNHB0Y3B0ciZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw/8U6rs1855DmuVkRqT2/giphy.webp
Clemson clinched the Atlantic Coast Conference title outright by driving 88 yards and eating up the last 7:01 of the game, David Treadwell kicking a 21-yard field goal with two seconds left. The drive came after Maryland had gone ahead, 17-14, on Tommy Neal's one-yard scoring run with 9:05 to go.
The Tigers chose to go for the field goal instead of a victory on third down from the 4-yard line. It may not have been courageous, but it did give them a 7-2-1, 5-1-1 record and the conference title that Maryland had held for three straight years.

34 - Wayne Gallman Scored 34 Clemson Touchdowns

Even though Clemson RB Wayne Gallman Jr. (2013-2016) is apparently even-keeled off the field. But on the field, he was a violent RB. A slasher with power. As Sports Illustrated put it during the 2015 playoffs:
“Gallman's quiet nature contrasts with his demeanor on the field. Several Clemson teammates describe the back as an "angry" runner, more apt to deliver a blow than to take a hit. ”
https://www.si.com/college/2016/01/06/clemson-rb-wayne-gallman-has-earned-his-moment-spotlight
Before Clemson:
Gallman was talented on both sides of the ball. The same Sports Illustrated article describes his recruitment:
“During his recruitment several schools considered him to be a primarily defensive prospect—former Georgia coach Mark Richt even wanted him to consider playing both ways—but the veracious Gallman always saw himself as an offensive threat. That came from years as a self-described "wild child"; if he wanted to get from point A to point B, he was going to run.”
https://www.si.com/college/2016/01/06/clemson-rb-wayne-gallman-has-earned-his-moment-spotlight
While at Clemson:
Gallman was simply outstanding at Clemson. Before the 2017 NFL Draft, ClemsonTigers.com wrote the following regarding his Clemson career:
“Though Gallman suited up for only three seasons as a Tiger, he set the school record for 100-yard rushing performances at 17 and, with 34 career touchdowns on the ground, departed with the third-most rushing touchdowns in program history. He was also an All-ACC selection each of the past two seasons, setting the single-season rushing mark at Clemson in 2015 and tying the single-season rushing touchdown standard in 2016.”
https://clemsontigers.com/draft-watch-wayne-gallman/
Gallman’s bio on ClemsonTigers.com states:
“Left Clemson after three seasons as one of the school’s most decorated and productive running backs in history … produced 3,429 rushing yards on 676 carries, with 34 touchdowns over 42 games (37 starts) … added 65 career receptions for 473 yards and two touchdowns … broke Raymond Priester’s single-season school record for rushing yards in 2015, and Priester’s career record for 100-yard rushing games in 2016 … achieved 100 or more yards in 17 games … Clemson was 17-0 in those contests … finished his career third in Clemson history in rushing touchdowns and fifth in rushing yards.”
https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/wayne-gallman/
After Clemson:
The NY Giants selected Wayne Gallman with the 140th Pick (4th Round) of the 2017 NFL Draft. He played for the Giants from 2017 through 2020. In 2021, Gallman played for the Atlanta Falcons and the Minnesota Vikings. Gallman was on the KC Chiefs practice squad and the Seattle Seahawks practice squad in 2022.
According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, Gallman registered the following NFL statistics:
Wayne Gallman (2017-2021, Giants, Falcons, Vikings): - 366 Carries for 1,548 Yards (4.2 Average) - 9 Rushing Touchdowns - 81 Receptions for 519 Yards - 2 Receiving Touchdowns
In February 2024, Gallman signed with the St. Louis Battlehawks of the United Football League. Go Battlehawks!!

In the absence of BigAl31 's intentional omission of Sunday

highway of the day, I will at least report that SC Highway 34 starts in Greenwood - home of the Festival of Flowers, Festival of Discovery, Blues Cruise (BBQ and Blues), and Lander University . It runs through the town of Ninety Six (which has more than one story about how it was named) - the home of the Ninety Six Historical Site. It runs east past the Buzzards Roost damm which impounds Lake Greenwood on Saluda River and through Chappells and Silverstreet to Newberry. You will pass through Salem Crossroads and Lebanon, SC (without the signs, you wouldn't know they were there) to Winnsboro and Ridgeway..... beyond that , I don't know where it goes because that is far as I have driven and unlike Big Al am not diligent enough to do such thorough research. Nor do I have have the great pics that he includes. But another odd fact that I have discovered - Highway 34 crosses 2 streams named Little River - one in Newberry County and another in Fairfield County (neither should be confused with the one in Abbeville and McCormick counties nor the one near Myrtle Beach which may or may not be an actual river and are not on Highway 34.
(Included as My address is currently Ninety Six and wanted to have it included for those fighting boredom enough to read through this.)
