160 - Patrick Sapp Completed 160 Clemson Passes

Patrick Sapp came to Clemson as a highly-rated QB recruit – and he brought along a not so highly rated DB recruit with him. He left as an NFL draft pick LB – with an NFL draft pick DB friend with him.

Before Clemson:

Sapp apparently played a key role in helping his friend and future NFL Hall of Famer, Brian Dawkins, to come to Clemson. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“You could make the case that Dawkins would not have come to Clemson had it not been for Patrick Sapp. In fact, Dawkins made that statement during the announcement of the award.

Sapp was a highly recruited quarterback from Jacksonville, Fla. in the early 1990s. In the process of recruiting Sapp, Clemson coaches became impressed with Dawkins, Sapp’s close friend and teammate on the gridiron and the basketball court at William M. Raines High School.”

TigerNet offers additional detail into Sapp’s recruitment and Dawkins’ recruitment. Excerpts from the TigerNet article reveal how Dawkins describes his recruitment and his relationship with Sapp (Thank you, DavidHood® for this excellent article!):

“Sapp was the highly-rated athlete that everyone wanted.

‘Patrick Sapp is still a good friend of mine to this day. He was highly-recruited and he would be a 4-star or probably a 5-star in today’s ratings,’ Dawkins said on the ‘Glen and Ray Show’ in Philadelphia earlier this week. ‘That is how big he was in Jacksonville and the nation, really. If you went to Jacksonville, everybody knew who Patrick Sapp was. He was not only good at football, he was good at basketball as well. He was all-state and all of those things in those two sports.’”

“Meanwhile, there weren’t many schools taking an interest in Dawkins, the future Hall of Famer.”

“And so Pat called me that night and asked where I was thinking about going, and I told him I was thinking about going to South Carolina. But he said ‘Don’t go there, They don’t send anybody to the pros on defense from there.’ So then he told me he wanted to make a phone call, and ask me if was cool going to Clemson. And I told him I would love to go to Clemson.’”

“‘So he called Clemson and told them that if he went to Clemson, then Brian has to come, too.’”

“The rest is history. Dawkins went on to have a stellar collegiate career and then fashioned his Hall of career in the NFL, but none of that would have happened if not for a friend he met on a school bus. None of it would have happened without Patrick Sapp.

‘I go out on the speaking circuit sometimes and I tell this story,’ Sapp said with a laugh. ‘And I think to myself that Clemson might owe me a little something for doing that.,”

(Great article, David! I definitely recommend reading the entire article and not just the excerpts I quoted!)

At Clemson

Patrick Sapp played three years at QB for Clemson. Demonstrating great athleticism, he then played LB his fourth year. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“In 1992, they both entered Clemson, Sapp as a quarterback and Dawkins as a defensive back.

Sapp must be considered one of the finest all-around athletes at Clemson since college football adopted the two-platoon substitution system in 1965. In the last 50 years, Sapp is one of just six players to start over the course of a season on both sides of the ball. Sapp is the only Tiger on record to total 2,000+ passing yards on offense and 50+ tackles on defense in a career.

He also played on the Clemson basketball team for Head Coach Rick Barnes during the 1994-95 season.

A quarterback for the Tigers his first three years, Sapp led Clemson to a 33-point win over a top-20 North Carolina squad as a freshman in 1992, then threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Terry Smith to beat Kentucky by one point in the 1993 Peach Bowl.

In 1995, Sapp moved to linebacker, where he started 12 games for the Gator Bowl team. He finished that season fifth on the squad in tackles (53), including nine tackles for loss.”

After Clemson:

The San Diego Chargers selected Patrick Sapp with the 50th pick in the 1996 NFL Draft. In four NFL seasons with the San Diego Chargers and the Arizona Cardinals, Sapp registered the following stats according to Pro-Football-Reference.com:

- 100 Tackles (73 Solo and 27 Assisted)
- 2 Tackles for Loss

More recently, Patrick Sapp was selected to receive an award named after his childhood friend: The Brian Dawkins Lifetime Achievement Award. According to the CLemsonTigers.com article cited above:

“Since 2013, Head Coach Dabo Swinney has presented the Brian Dawkins Lifetime Achievement Award to a former Tiger who has consistently demonstrated the qualities of leadership, community service and other high qualities that are consistent with excellence since graduating from Clemson.

After graduation, Sapp returned to Clemson to work in university administration in 2006 as director of major gifts & alumni engagement. He served in that role for 14 years.

Today, he is vice president of development for Rosemont Holdings Skore Hotel. He is also CEO of Universal Therapeutic Services in Greenville, S.C., a company that partners with the community to provide human resource services, including mental health.

Additionally, Sapp has been involved in many community service projects. He served as chair of Leaders R Us in Greenville. He is the co-founder of the Greenville Red Raider Youth Organization and is a founder of the One Clemson Board. He also served as a board member of Greenville Technical College and serves as board chair for the Brian Dawkins Impact Foundation.”

Patrick Sapp’s son, Josh Sapp, is currently a tight end for Clemson. Father and son hold a cool distinction. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“[Josh] scored Clemson’s final points on a two-point conversion in the final minute of a bowl win against Kentucky 20 years after his father threw for Clemson's game-winning touchdown in the final minute of a bowl win against Kentucky.”

Clemson DB A.J. Terrell (2017-2019) will likely be remembered most for a certain Pick-6 against Tua that opened the scoring in a 44-16 onslaught. Terrell had a stellar career at Clemson, however, that went well beyond that one big play.

At Clemson:

His ClemsonTigers.com bio highlights his Clemson career as follows:

Concluded his three-year Clemson career credited with 107 career tackles (3.5 for loss), 20 pass breakups, six interceptions (returned for a total of 160 yards including a 44-yard touchdown) and two forced fumbles over 1,827 snaps in 44 games (30 starts) … started all 15 games in his first year as a starter in 2018, scoring the first points of the College Football Playoff National Championship on a pick-six … helped Clemson to a 29-1 record in two years as a starter.

https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/a-j-terrell/

Terrell’s stats demonstrate his stellar play at Clemson. According to Sports-Reference.com:

2017:
- 14 Tackles (10 Solo, 4 Assisted)
- 1 Interception (0 Return Yards)

2018:
- 53 Tackles (40 Solo, 13 Assisted)
- 3 Interceptions (95 Return Yards)
- 1 Interception Return for Touchdown

2019:
- 24 Tackles (10 Solo, 24 Assisted)
- 2 Interceptions (65 Return Yards)

Clemson Career (2017-2019):
- 166 Tackles (84 Solo, 82 Assisted)
- 1 (Big) Interception Return for Touchdown

After Clemson:

The Atlanta Falcons selected A.J. Terrell with the 16th overall pick of the 2020 FL Draft (1st Round). According to Pro-Football-Reference.com Terrell has registered the following statistics in his four NFL seasons (and counting):

AJ Terrell - Atlanta Falcons (2020-2023)
- 247 Tackles (183 Solo, 64 Assisted)
- 4 Interceptions
- 1 Fumble Recovery (21 Return Yards)

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/T/TerrAJ00.htm

It is worth noting that A.J. Terrell’s brother, DB Avieon Terrell, is already demonstrating signs of greatness for Clemson as well! Avieon Terrell was a freshman for Clemson in 2023.

I was so fired up about that pick six, that it took about a half hour for my blood pressure to return to normal. That was my favorite defensive play of the game.
