121 - RB Jacky Jackson Registered 121 Receiving Yards for Clemson

Interestingly, Clemon RB Jacky Jackson shared a name with not one, but two other teammates in 1967. Nonetheless, he often found the spotlight!

According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“THE JACKSON THREE

The 1967 team, who like the 1986 team, won the ACC championship. It had three players with virtually the same name, Jack Jackson. There was Jack Jackson, Jackie Lee Jackson and Jacky Jackson. Jackie Lee and Jacky actually went by Jacky Jackson, but Sports Information Director Bob Bradley convinced Jackie Lee to use his middle name to distinguish between at least two of them.”

https://clemsontigers.com/the-last-word-the-name-game/

While at Clemson, Jackson and his teammates were apparently a close-knit group. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“While a student at Clemson, Jacky Jackson would often bring his buddies home with him on weekends to Edgefield, SC. They were a close-knit group on Clemson’s football team in the mid-1960s.

Two of Jackson’s best friends were quarterback Jimmy Addison and wide receiver Phil Rogers. A trip to Edgefield usually meant a side visit to the Anderson family household.”

https://clemsontigers.com/phil-rogers-memory-will-live-on/

In two seasons, Jacky Jackson (not to be confused with his teammates with the same name) registered some strong statistics. According to Sports-Reference.com:

Jacky Jackson (1966-1967):
- 207 Carries for 872 Yards (4.2 Average)
- 11 Rushing Touchdowns
- 4 Receptions for 121 Yards (30.3 Average)
- 1 Receiving Touchdown
- 3 Pass Completions for 69 Yards (23.0 Average)

Also, according to Sports-Reference.com, Jacky Jackson’s 48 points led Clemson in scoring in 1966.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/clemson/1966.html

And Jacky Jackson’s 24 points placed second in scoring for Clemson in 1967.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/clemson/1967.html

Thanks to the Greenville News for the picture below:

“Clemson's Jacky Jackson (15) scores against Wake Forest Saturday, September 23, 1967 at Memorial Stadium in Clemson. The Tigers won the game 23-6.”

Jacky Jackson also played a huge role in the debut game for Howard’s Rock. According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“HOWARD’S ROCK DEBUT

On Sept. 24, 1966, Howard’s Rock was firmly in place for the first time as the Tigers ran down the Hill. But the team did not rub the Rock before making the run prior to the Virginia game.

Clemson was defending co-champion of the ACC, and the outlook for 1966 was bright. The Tigers had never lost to Virginia on the gridiron, so the Clemson fans and players were excited about the start of the season.

But the start of that game was not very good for the home team. Clemson lost five fumbles and gave up 429 yards of total offense to the Cavaliers, who were coming off a 4-6 season. Clemson had some early success behind quarterback Jimmy Addison, the rushing of Buddy Gore and a 68-yard punt return by Frank Liberatore, but Virginia held a 35-18 lead with 3:06 remaining in the third quarter.

Faced with a third down and short yardage on its own 25, Addison made the play of the day.

“We called a pass play that had resulted in several completions to our split end, Wayne Bell, in an earlier game,” explained Addison.

“Wayne found an open spot between the linebackers, and the Virginia cornerback came from his deep position to cover him. Jacky Jackson, who had run from his tailback position down the left sideline, was open and made a beautiful catch behind that cornerback and outran the safety to the endzone.”

That 75-yard scoring play gave the Tigers a 40-35 lead with 3:49 left, and it proved to be the winning touchdown.

“I thought I had overthrown Jackson, but he put it in second gear and ran underneath the pass,” added Addison.

https://clemsontigers.com/rock-solid-tradition/#:~:text=Jacky%20Jackson%2C%20who%20had%20run,to%20be%20the%20winning%20touchdown.

That go-ahead touchdown gave Clemson the lead for good. Another ClemsonTigers.com page adds the following about Jackson’s touchdown:

“That gave the Tigers a 40-35 lead with 3:49 left, and it proved to be the game-winning touchdown.”

After Clemson:

I am not sure when this was written, but ClemsonTigers.com reveals Jackson as having retired from a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry:

“Jacky Jackson retired recently from the pharmaceutical business. He had been President of the North American division of the Pharmacia and Upjohn corporation.

“Flying to Europe 20 times a year became overwhelming,” Jackson said.

After “living just about everywhere in the U.S.”, the Jacksons now reside in Edisto, SC, where he “dabbles” in the land business.

They are building a home on Lake Hartwell.”

https://clemsontigers.com/phil-rogers-memory-will-live-on/

The same article described the Jacksons’ generosity in donating to an endowment for teammate and friend Phil Rogers after Rogers’ passing:

Jacky Jackson and his wife, Billie, have ensured that Rogers’ memory will live on as they have contributed to an endowment to IPTAY in honor of Phil Rogers. The Jacksons also have created an endowment with Clemson’s Foundation.

“It was a family decision,” said Jackson. “It was important for us to thank Clemson through the Foundation for all it had done for me. We also wanted to thank IPTAY by honoring Phil for what it had done for all of us.”

https://clemsontigers.com/phil-rogers-memory-will-live-on/

Special thanks to Scott Rhymer and the Tiger Pregame Show for this picture of Jack Jackson and the info on his nickname:
Before the 1967 season began the media had dubbed Gore Mr. Zip because he had great speed as he “zipped past 'em”.

The below photo is of Jacky Jackson, dubbed Mr. Zap, because he go the tough yards inside the tackles and “zapped ‘em”.

South Carolina Highway 121 is a 134.2 mile major state highway that runs from the south end at the Georgia state line near North Augusta to the north end at US 21 in Rock Hill, going through Saluda, Newberry, Whitmire, Chester, and some small towns and running concurrently with several highways along the way. Billy O’Dell was born in Whitmire. Trevor Booker was born in Newberry.

Two military commanders patrolling South Carolina during the Revolutionary War were Thomas Sumter and Francis Marion. The Battle of Fishdam Ford took place late in the war where present day SC 121 crosses the Broad River between Carlisle and Chester. It was an attempted surprise attack by British Major James Wemyss on General Sumter in the early hours of November 9, 1780. But Sumter's men were wary of surprise attacks as a common British tactic. Wemyss was wounded and captured and the patriots won and moved on to the Blackstock Plantation in Union where another battle took place. Sumter, known as the Fighting Gamecock, was the inspiration for the nickname for UofSC athletics, while General Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, has an 8th great-grandson using his name to make bizarre posts on TigerNet.

Mel Gibson's character in "The Patriot" was based loosely on Francis Marion.
