Chad Kelly - First Hand Account
Sep 5, 2012, 5:27 PM
|
|
Just wanted to clear everything up about Chad. This is my dad's account but I'm using it for now. I'm a freshman at Clemson, and I'm taking the same course that Chad was in today when him and the professor got into an argument. Basically, the professor told Chad he was being childish and needed to grow up because Chad tried to start something with one of the baseball players last Friday. The argument last Friday happened as soon as class was over outside of the building, and the professor saw it. So today, he told the entire class that one student(Swag Kelly) acted childish and a bit immature and he will call the police next time something like this happens. He also said the baseball player, who I will not name, handled it very well by simply walking away. Chad then decided to mouth off at the professor. They had a few words back and forth, and Chad was mad at the professor for calling him out in front of the entire class. Also, the professor called him out for wearing his hood on in the building. After the argument, Chad put his head down and went to sleep. As for the cops, some idiotic student decided to call the cops during class. Other than that, we can all agree that Mr. Swag Kelly has some serious growing up to do.

Or PERHAPS CK brings this on himself!!! What a concept. He has a reputation for a reason. Going back to his first high school he wasn't thought of too fondly. He seems to have an attitude and carries a bad reputation wherever he goes. That's not just a coincidence.

I agree, i'd be pissed if i was an average student pumping 15k a year into a school only to be made to look like a d1ck in front of my peers for no reason. This should go double for football players, especially good ones, who generate considerably more $ for the university than any 1 professor.

First, two things 1. I have no idea if this is a true story And 2. I have no idea what the initial conflict started over
That said, the prof can run his class how he likes, and if he sees a football player (a student representing the school beyond the classroom) act a fool then it isn't BS to call him on it. I have no idea how it was handled (what was actually said) but if the story is true then I laugh at the folks who are painting the prof in a bad light. Don't want to get called out and embarrassed for acting foolishly? Don't act that way. And when an authority figure calls you on it don't be a punk about it.
Grow up indeed.

call out students and ridicule them in front of other students, esp for something that happened outside the classroom? Get your head out your rear. A high school teacher would be on the evening news and suspended for this.
Was Chad wrong? Yes! But so was the prof, who is the adult.
Regarding the altercation, unless punches are thrown, or it's a big group thing, you don't call the cops. This professor is a moron. People argue every day.

Clemson is first and foremost a university. You know, classes, books, etc. Ask Mike Bellamy how your warped sense of protocol and priority work out at one of those places that actually gives a darn about education.

He's a spoiled brat that doesn't understand that he's in an adult/grown up world now. He's still young and stupid and thinks he's in high school. I knew alot of 18 year olds that were still acting like this in their first year of college. They either straighten up or they usually are no enrolled the next year because they did something stupid.
Honestly I don't see this kid panning out because he's a Stephen Garcia in the making.

With all the special treatment our athletes already get, I don't want to hear it. Have you been to Vickery Hall? These kids have people dragging them to class, forcing them to do their homework, helping them study, and setting them up with the best possible schedule.
If you're a FB player at CU you get coddled enough. If you act like an ###, you deserve to get called out for it. The best way to deal with bravado is to publicly shame it.

with just about anything for the sake of winning football games; meanwhile professors are expecting the non-student athletes to perform as expected academically. I love Clemson sports but right is right, and if I see a student-athlete getting away with ######## I expect him to be called out on it. Maybe when some of you students on this board get out in the real world you'll see that some times you work with people who are lazy, selfish and only looking out for themselves. Those are the kinds of people who only respond to being called out openly before their peers before realizing they need a serious attitude check.

then you need to visit some class room management guide books. I am not trying to sound mean and I don't know your exact situation granted but still. I have taught high school, middle school, and elementary - rarely have had those kinds of problems.

Did the professor mention him specifically by name or did CK tell on himself when he spoke up? I've had professors use situations involving students and questionable behavior to help teach us all a life lesson and they never called the person out by name.
Now if the professor called him out, then that was just downright stupid.

still mouthing off in the classroom and you either deal with it then or have a situation build up until it blows up.
How anyone could take up for the idiot thats causing all the problems is a perfect picture of the change in our society. Coddle the trouble makers because it's not their fault. I'm 32 years old and would be in favor of the professor kicking him out of his class for acting like an idiot. You can't ignore idiots they just keep going if you do.

The teacher is completely wrong in this case (and believe me, I don't say that much). I am not saying that Chad handled this right either but the professor was out of line and any decent administrator at any school would agree. Teacher should be reprimanded.

Classic behavior of a student only trying to get class interrupted further. Seems to be a mighty unorganized class. You shouldn't have class room management problems like this in college, even in freshman classes.

Sep 5, 2012, 5:53 PM
|

First and foremost, I hate egotistical jerks. However, even IF this story is true, the professor is in the wrong. By this account, the initial conflict happened OUTSIDE the building, making it none of the prof's business. The prof has every right to control his/her classroom, and to some degree, the common areas of the building, but not outside. Indeed, the prof overstepped. That being said, I don't mind swagger on the field, but not off.

Professor never stated Chad's name. He just referred to him as one of his students. Chad was the one that said "Why do you have to call me out in front of the entire class?" Professor never directly stated his name.

Maybe false evidence, but it's not hearsay since the initial post claims to have actually witnessed the event.
Hearsay would be if the OP said he heard from someone else in the room about what happened.

First of all, I can't imagine a professor would have used any specific student's name anecdotally trying to make a point about his opinion of acceptable behavior. CK may have actually volunteered his identity rather being singled out, I don't know. Secondly, if the prof DID ID CK specifically, that was wrong to do no matter what the kid's status was and should have been dealt with one on one and not in a public forum like that. Lack of maturity notwithstanding there's no need to humiliate anybody that way.

Maybe Chad Kelly missed an opportunity to be a leader
Sep 5, 2012, 6:10 PM
|
|
regardless of the initial circumstances.
Could have taken the lead to show respect to a fellow Clemson athlete, fellow students and a Professor.
Whether right or wrong to start, making it right at the end would show leadership and character. Arguing and pouting seem to be indicators of being self centered.
But who knows for sure what transpired?

a professor in front of a class full of other students. The professor is in the wrong here as he instigated this. Chad certainly could have handled it better, but most 18 year olds would respond that way. Some would have whooped that professor's ###! If I were Chad I would have said "FU" and walked out of class and gone straight to the dean's office or Barker and demanded a public apology.

Sounds like the prof and CK both have some growing up to do. For the prof there is a time and place for everything and the middle (or beginning) of class isn't likely it. For CK, he needs to avoid taking everything so personally and ignore some things - that comes with maturity.
I guess I expect college students to over-react sometimes but expect more from the prof.

getting involved and certainly had no business trying to make Kelly look foolish in front of the class. If the prof wanted to approach Kelly in private after class so be it, but what he did was more childish than Kelly's argument. He intentionally wanted to belittle Kelly publicly. If I were Kelly I'd demand a public apology. Professors are suppose to be mature adults, role models, not petty instigators.

Then he didn't call out Kelly directly. Not sure it's the right move on the part of the prof, but it clearly, to me, was the wrong move for Kelly to react as he did.
Again this is entirely based on the OP's account. I have zero idea if that is accurate.

I had heard Swag had a pizza delivered to class and the professor made an example out of him; by taking it away and letting everyone except for Swag have some.
By the way, which professor was it? tia

1. Chad needs to grow up. 2. The prof needs to grow up too. He handled it about as poorly as possible.

While Chad is immature and needs to grow up, sounds like the professor needs to as well. Or at the very least be enrolled in a class on how to handle situations with students. Infront of the entire class is not needed.

fodder on what happened in a college class room on an internet message board under an anonymous name. Secondly, if that is a true story, then the Professor acted just as childish as Chad Kelly and made the situation worse than it already was.

Professors have no right to treat adults like children. I wonder if the old fart wasn't jealous of the fact that five years from now Chad probably will have earned more than a professor does in a lifetime.

I don't know if it's an income thing. . .but I could definitely understand the professor's frustration with "teaching" a "class" that's really a facade, a place to put athletes while they pretend to go to college. No, most kids at college don't act like Chad Kelly. In fact, most kids outgrow that crap by middle school. I agree that there was no need for the prof to bring it up, but he's probably had enough of hoodie wearing swag already.
We should offer a team sports vocational major and quit forcing some kids with sub-par academic skills to pretend to be college students.

The question really comes down to whether the professor said Chad Kelly's name or not in front of the class. Clearly whatever took place outside of class was bad enough that the professor remembered it and wanted to bring it up in class that that behavior is not acceptable at Clemson. I've had professors talk about what they've seen outside of class, learning isn't just confined to what is inside your textbook. However, if he did single out Chad by name, then the professor was unprofessional in doing so and should have talked to him before or after class (but from the OP's account it doesn't sound like Chad was singled out - who knows....)

How could anyone fault the professor for calling this idiot

out. I'm sure it was hey if you wanna keep running your mouth you can leave or be escorted out of my classroom. If you think for a second he wasn't still running his mouth you're crazy. He probably got his feelings hurt and couldn't handle it...just like my 3 year old does.
This is college..not high school. If you start running your mouth trying to start a fight in a public place anywhere you will have security or an authority figure deal with you. The kid needs to understand he's not getting sent to the principals office anymore he's getting charged with something..
He's just an idiot 18 year old that needs a dose of reality and he'll either straighten up or won't be enrolled much longer.

one of my Profs freshman year at the Citadel telling a mom on parents day that her son had no chance of passing his class.
Her reply was "But he made straight A's in High School." His retorted, "Madame, your son is not in High School anymore, and he has no chance of passing my class. Good day...."

Kudos to the BASEBALL player for being the one unquestionably bright and mature person in this situation. Each year Jack has a marathon meeting with all of the players when they get back to school. In that meeting they are told in no uncertain terms how they are supposed to deal with professors, teammates, female students, etc. They are also told that they will not embarrass their school, their coaches, or their parents. Do they always live up to this? Of course not. But Jack does his best to leave nothing to chance.
Well done Clemson baseball.

Many of you are bashing the professor here, and claiming him to be a "liberal, hippie, athlete-hater." I don't think that's fair at all.
While I wasn't there, and don't know exactly what happened, the OP did clarify that the professor never singled CK out in class; Kelly himself volunteered his own identity in regard to what the professor was talking about. Many of you say that the professor has no right to bring up something that happened outside of class, in class -- and there's some truth to that. But, it's certainly possible that the altercation started in class (through class discussion or something) and then continued, and escalated after class. In that case, the professor does have a right to address it.
These assertions that the professor should be fired or have to meet with the dean are ridiculous. Contrary to what a lot of you seem to think, I think we should give the professor the benefit of the doubt, rather than an 18-year old kid (who happens to be a known instigator). If we learn more that casts the professor in an unfavorable light, then we'll go from there.
