Most of college football is not a fan of the those two conferences and will only watch their own teams in the other conferences. I predict a slow revenue decline and possible bankrupt espn. Then what ? The canibals will start eating each other.

Don't underestimate the midwest and southeast when it comes to football viewership.

Well Argo, maybe you should have looked at TV ratings for last season. Of the 25 top rated games, 17 involved either 1 or both teams from the SEC or Big10. You have no idea the national following that teams like Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, Georgia and others have, so a decline in viewership will not be a problem. It is very probable that with the new members coming to the BIG10 and SEC, the new rivalries will bring even higher ratings.

Two things, both options lead to the slow decline of what we know as cfb:

1. People don’t want to watch minor league football masquerading as “student-athletes” representing a university. They could just watch the nfl.

2. The execs attempt to make super conferences is a last ditch effort to pull out all the stops and create some hype before the gig is up, they will extract as much money as possible until there’s 1-2 main conferences and no more loyalty or attachment for the fans after the “shiny new thing” effect wears off.

Disclaimer: I don't like the direction college football is going. But, apparently, I'm in the minority.

College hoops have been minor league basketball for several years. Virtually every first round NBA pick is either from Europe or is a freshman in college. When was the last time a junior, or much less a senior, in college was a first round pick?

March Madness is bigger than ever. Fans didn't quit watching hoops when Calipari, Coach K, and all the other blue bloods started filling their rosters with 1-and-doners.

Me, I'm an old geezer. I gave up on college hoops 15 or so years ago. 40 years ago I loved it as much as I loved college football.

At least college kids have to stay in school 3 years. But, if they don't get a handle on the portal, I can see myself giving up on college football too. It won't be because of two conferences dominating. It will be because of it becoming the minor league for the NFL and academics and the schools the kids play for becoming meaningless.

Couldn’t agree more. Trying to watch the tournament as much as possible this year but just can’t get into it except the Clemson games. 30-40 years ago I would have given my last dollar to be able to see as many games as we can see now.

It’s already become less meaningful. The value of a college education isn’t what it used to be.

Nobody watches minor league baseball or the d league for NBA. They will use their narratives to try to cover for whatever this new football will be for as long as they can, to extract as many dollars as possible before the fans bail.

Wish it wasn’t so and hope I’ll be wrong but I just don’t see how they can put the toothpaste back in the tube on this one without the courts changing their stance…

I've seen at least one media representative estimate the SEC's and Big's revenue would TRIPLE if they broke off and did their own thing.

I would say go for it!! I hope they do. Raising prices on everything including internet and tv services to watch said games seems to be what they believe is guaranteed money. Will this eventually price folks out? Not all at once, but fans when they start dropping off find out that there is life outside of sports and it is no longer considered a priority.

I have learned that death is the only thing guaranteed in this lifetime.

Here's an interesting angle on the direction of college football.... We trash the NIL and say college football is gone as we know it. Great point on college basketball to with Coach K and others transitioning to a roster of one and dones. It was interesting what Pitino said about UK after their loss to Richmond that he will seriously consider not having all one and dones and get some more transfers and 5th year players to add some experience and maturity to his roster.

Why do we not rip the high school baseball player that signs with Clemson only to get drafted high and go to the MLB or minor leagues? Why do we not say he needs to get an education b/c the chances of him making it is the show is so small? Why do we not rip the 12 year old that goes pro in tennis down to one of the tennis factories in FL? Why do we not rip the 8 year old that goes into the gymnastic pipeline if they want to have a chance to make the Olympic team?

We knock the football player and cry out for college football as we know it. I love Clemson and college football as much as anybody, but I think we are letting our personal bias get in the way of what we think is best for the student athlete/whatever we call them now in football. I think our bias for Clemson is getting in the way a bit.

I do think Dabo is 100% correct about what is going wrong in college football with the transfer portal, and this post is not to knock his beliefs about how he values education first and how he uses football as a tool to give young men the tools for life, but I do think if a kid has a chance to make life-changing money that can change the situation for himself and his family, maybe we shouldn't be so hard on the young man. Money drives everything and it is driving what is going on in college football right now.... but the train has left the station.

Yep I watch more NFL than college now. Used to be the opposite. Not many big games that I feel I already know the outcome.

They do have occasional what I call 50/50 games but in the ACC/B1G and SEC we already know who will be there in the end. Why watch Tenn and Ole Miss? You know they want be there in the end. Vandy vs anybody? Kentucky, South Carolina?? I could go on in those 3 conferences with meaningless games. Same thing every year.
Alabama will be a ? mark this season for obvious reasons but in the end as in every year you will have Michigan and OSU, Ga and Bama or LSU, Fla St and Clemson. Man isn’t that exciting seems we have seen this before.

I bet a lot of people not fans of Ohio State-Michigan, Oklahoma-Texas, Georgia-Florida, Bama-Auburn watch those games. You think it's only ACC fans who watch Clemson-FSU?

When was the last time you watched Illinois and Nebraska, UofSC and Vandy (unless you are a Clemson fan and think Vandy will win) or UCLA and Northwestern.

Sort of depends. I've watched both. What time is the game? Who else is playing at the same time? Those might be competitive games. I'm not going to center my day around games like that but if I'm home I probaby watch those at noon when the other options are LSU vs. Mercer or Clemson vs. UT Chattanooga - blowouts.
