Here's what I noticed about the pass protection

Jan 2, 2013, 10:38 AM

We had two major flaws against LSU's defense: (of course, this was probably the best front 4 we've faced all year)

1) Blown assignments on twists.

We actually blocked pretty well, all things considered, except when the Tackle and End would run a twist. This is when the DT and the DE criss-cross each other in the pass rush. The idea is to get the guard flowing to the outside and then bring the DE inside with nobody left to block him.

We didn't pick up the twists very well and I chalk that up to injuries on the OL. We were playing musical chairs on the OL all night and that makes it really tough to pick up twists and stunts. The guys are playing out of their normal position or just aren't used to playing period, and it's just hard to overcome that.

2) Little help from the backs

I don't know how they would grade out, but I noticed that neither Ellington or McDowell were very consistent in their pass blocking. I would say they were about 50/50, and sometimes they did a complete "ole´ block". If the DL runs a twist and that DE comes free, the Back has to chop him down, and unfortunately that didn't happen much. I do think they picked up the blitz several times, and that was good.

Just my $0.02

We missed our 2 point conversion because our running back got blown up on the block. Whoever it was went in too high and too loose. If he gives Tajh another /2 second to set his feet, we score.

Wow, thats funny cause I just read that

our backs did a great job of blocking against LSU.

I guess negative people are always going to look for something negative.

This is just my opinion after watching the game a couple

of times thanks to my DVR. I don't usually read the coverage of the game by sportswriters. If you disagree, that's fine.

Strongly Disagree with you on #2

Hot Rod was cut blocking very well. I'd say this was the best cut blocking we'd done all year and why Hot Rod was in the game so much. He really slowed down the pass rush.

That may be. I didn't pay much attention to which

back was doing what.

so you make a criticism of them specifically but then you admit you didn't really pay attention. Are you just looking to ##### about something?

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

Lots of folks are criticizing the blocking. I was just

talking about the specific flaws with the blocking, not the specific players responsible. The backs, as a group, didn't help much when a defender came free. I didn't take notes as to which exact back it was on every play.

I did notice a few times where McDowell specifically threw a cut block, but either did so prematurely OR when he threw it he was a little low and the DL was able to get over him to continue the pressure.

I do think they did a good job overall, just a few moments they can learn and build from. Like you said they did a great job picking up the blitz on most occassions just a few execution flaws.
