Here's a "is it just me" question?

11

Aug 3, 2023, 5:17 PM

And I'll apologize in advance, because given the subject matter's popularity, I'm likely to hit a couple of you with friendly fire, but I can't help it. I'll just say I could be wrong, and welcome the opportunity for you to educate me to the error of my ways.

I'm a dog lover.....big and medium dogs mainly, tiny dogs less so, but even then I get the appeal....I mean they're still dogs. I like dogs...purebred, rescue mutts, you name it.

Doodles though....anything that's a something-doodle. Goldendoodle, Aussiedoodle, Bernedoodle.........I see one these days and I'm just judging the owners instantly, right or wrong. I haven't met one yet that is just a totally amazing dog....they're all hyper, spastic, and a little slow mentally. It's like the poster dog for basic white girls who do whatever the latest fad is, and when I see a straight man or couple with one, I instantly know who wears the pants in the family. It just seems like a stupid designer dog fad that ultimately results in worse dogs to satisfy a trend, and I don't get it.

Is it just me or not?

No, it's not just you.

My parents have one and my sister has one. I truly hate both of those dogs. They are dumb as bricks and jump on anyone and everyone constantly. Of course, they weren't exactly trained by Cesar Milan but still.

I said same briefly in the thread below.

not an -oodle fan. Even poodles. But esp not golden- or labra-. Just stupid expensive bastardized versions of dogs that were fine how they were before. Even the guy that came up with the idea regrets it.

Got a link to said regret?

I'd actually like to read it. (I can obviously google if you don't know right where it is)

Mini, not standard. One ended up dying in the yard at the house of flow0440 when she was a couple years old. Not sure what happened to her, if she ate some poison or something. Got buried in the back yard and we had a new poodle puppy later that evening. She lived a long life and was a great dog. She ended up being my grandmothers dog (grandma lived with us) because my grandmother would boil chicken thighs and feed her that every day. That dog followed my grandmother step for step around the house. They were good dogs, smart, good disposition.

They’re down there in the Pitbull tier of my dog caste system. Often they’re worse behaved, but I’ve never known one to eat the face off a human.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The face eating only comes after centuries of being bred as

Your friendly fire has hit me. But it’s okay…

Aug 3, 2023, 5:37 PM

We have a labradoodle because 2 families we are friends with, had already purchased 2 out of the litter and they started throwing hints to my wifey about how great of a deal it was and how they are hypoallergenic. (I’m not buying that, but she did.) I didn’t want any pets. But the wife and kids wanted a doggie real, real bad. The timing was just right for me, to not be able to say no. Now we have a very well behaved and semi intelligent dog. I like her even though I thought I wouldn’t.

As far as the pants wearing is concerned. I do the laundry and most of the cooking… because I want to. But I also get to drink all of the beer and bourbon, eat all of the pickled sausages and eggs, and fix everything that breaks around here. I guess I wear the pants in the family sort of. But only because she won’t let me go out in public in my underwear.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thank you for your input.

3

Aug 3, 2023, 6:11 PM

I shall not judge you, as it seems you bought a dog with the mindset of complete and total apathy, which is a state of mind I could understand buying such a dog in.

Doodles are a nuh-uh for me. Two reasons, one, first dog

4

Aug 3, 2023, 5:47 PM

the family had when I was a wee lad was a poodle…mean AF. Amazing I even like dogs after that initial impression. Two, we looked at a year old labradoodle before we adopted our most recent pups. Other fam wanted to re-home the guy because they just couldn’t handle him. Well, I’ve trained labs for duck hunting so we went to check him out. Found out real quick, this pup got all poodle brain…basic commands plum evaded him, not reward motivated, and had an insane prey drive. And these poor, read rich folks’, house looked like a buzz saw had gone off in there. Almost every piece of furniture was teeth marked or chewed up completely. Not really the dogs fault, it was easy to tell they’d just left him at home all day while they worked and he got bored. Both families sad faces, but no way was I letting that terror in my house.

Never really thought about what one might infer about doodle owners, but I can see the stereotype earned, now that you mentioned it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is interesting. The breeder was trying to explain to me the breeding back for certain traits.

4

Aug 3, 2023, 6:00 PM

I looked it up and I think our labradoodle is f1b. They bred labradoodle back to labrador. It made no sense to me at the time and I was just like yes, here’s the money, thank you, let’s get the dog and go home. But our labradoodle is pretty intelligent and very well behaved. She does get a little hyper when she meets a new person. But it’s normally all tail wagging and sniffing. And if we tell her to lay down or go outside she does it without pause. We trained her, but if I’m being honest, we aren’t the type of family to put a ton of work into a pet. We pet her, feed her, keep her up to date on her shots, and just enjoy the love and antics she likes to provide. I’d say minimal training and she just got it. Maybe we just got lucky or something.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Woof

Aug 4, 2023, 12:34 AM

Regardless of breed, all dogs are pack oriented. You accepted your pup into your pack and she knows her place in the world…which is verrrry comforting to dogs. The pup I looked at had no such identity…not his fault. He didn’t know why he was where he was or who he should look to for direction…just wasn’t integrated to the family or “pack”., so he instinctively claimed his territory and made it his own.m, which means he effed up chit the way he wanted when he was alone. The amount of time and effort to undo that instinct wasn’t worth it to me…at a year old it would have been a Herculean task. I noped.

Labs, on the whole, and many labradoodles I’d imagine have a strong instinct to bond to humans. It’s why they make good hunting dogs and shih tzus don’t. Labs want to please their pack leader bar none, combine that with their intellect and it makes them very trainable.

Sounds like you have a great pup and I don’t think you are a basic white girl at all.

We have a Bernedoodle

8

Aug 3, 2023, 6:11 PM

She is extremely smart and never ever never barks. She is loving to strangers, especially kids. Her bond with my daughter is unparalleled.

We don’t even have to have a fence or an electronic collar. She sticks by us 100% of the time. She runs with me on the trails without a leash. It’s amazing.

She leans heavy Berne so she is lazy as ####. One good run and she is toast for the whole day. 2 walks and she is toast. It’s amazing.

So go ahead and tell me I am basic. But I don’t give a ####. She is awesome.

Pluses - no fur all over furniture and clothes. That alone is worth it.

Mine is pretty smart and very gentle and doesn't bark. All pluses.

Minus - just doesn't a personality like a lab. With a lab, you can see different expressions. Doodle, nope.

Also our is kind of stand offish. Loving but will only sit with you for a few mins.

Also, the grooming bills are high

I see one and compare her to my wife and seldom do I see one that meets my approval. However, I think the relationships between men and their wives and men and their dogs are similar in one way. Do you get along, do you love each other and will you grieve when they die?

Then I remember, it's nothing to me if they marry some skinny woman who looks like a 10 yr old boy from behind and the front too from the neck down. I just turn away.

Aug 3, 2023, 9:31 PM

further. I like dogs. But I don't consider myself a "dog person." We had to put our little guy down a little while back after 12-ish years. He was a good boy, and all things considered, a pretty easy dog to care for. Didn't require much exercise or play. Very independent for a pup. And really not that barky. This is on top of being hypoallergenic so never any hair-coated furniture, or the smell of dog permanently entrenched in the rug. Kind of the ideal scenario, but I don't know if I'd ever want to own another one again.

Mainly because it's like having another kid. You have to make sure your schedule works around letting them out to pee, and if you go on vacation of any length where they can't come too, it's at least $100+ added on to the cost for boarding.

Aug 4, 2023, 8:37 AM

first....I agree with you on a lot of doodles

However, our dog Hank is a double-doodle...meaning both parents were golder-doodles. And, yes, double-doodle is gheyest name ever.

He has more personality than any dog I've ever had/been around. I'm not sure what happened with his genes. Previous dog, Rici, was a golden and quite possibly the sweetest/best-behaved dog ever. When she passed, I wanted to get another golden BUT wife-of didn't like the shedding/fur so she wanted a doodle 'cause they aren't supposed to shed and not supposed to bark much. Well...Hank barks a lot (has to wear a bark collar) and sheds twice as much as Rici did. But I digress....
