competition...47/8 is great but good lord #4 would have put up massive #'s in that league!! I wish him well but have a feeling when he gets into big boy territory again he will not be quite so efficient, actually nowhere near as efficient. If he can get his head on straight and stop being a distraction he could become a good QB obviously.

Personally, I wish Dabo had worked with him a bit more, suspended him, and required him to go to counseling. INHO, Dabo can be unreasonably stubborn. He at times seems quite rigid in his beliefs and attitudes. Just my opinion. I don't think they even have a team psychologist.

What are you saying? He's a rapist?? Give us a break. He was a highly talented, temperamental, somewhat immature player that, in my opinion Dabo could have handled in a less draconian fashion. IMHO, Dabo's rigidity is a major weakness of his. He is great recruiter, but not a great coach.

He was NEVER going to be content as anyone's back-up.

[ in reply to He should have been our backup quarterback this year and ] |

That's the crux of the whole issue.
Why does anyone think that he would have functioned well coming off the bench at Clemson while Watson was here.
Sure it's great to use 20/20 hindsight now that Watson is injured to say that the door would have opened for Kelly in Watson's absence.
But the fact is that Kelly was NEVER going to be satisfied not starting and as long as Watson has one good knee, Kelly was NEVER going to start.
We'll see if he can compete for the starting job at Ole Miss now after his stellar year facing JUCO competition. If not, look for trouble in Oxford before long ...

I think he would have been a great compliment to Watson. He was the Number #3 QB nationally coming out of high school. Unless Watson gets in the weight room and puts on some bulk he's never going to stay healthy. We could be in a load of hurt next year. Why the he##, don't they give Schleussler a shot.

Kelly and Complement should not be used in the same sentence
Dec 11, 2014, 10:59 PM
|

Chad kelly was not going to complement anything.
He's a chronic malcontent and he will continue to be one anywhere he lands where he isn't handed the starting job.
To this point, nothing that has happened to Watson has been strength or weight related.

I blame Dabo as much as him. Could have been handled in a way that punished him, but gave him an opportunity to learn and grow. Dabo doesn't have that capacity, perhaps because of his uncompromising religious views. I don't agree with them, but he has a right to them. I just don't they serve him well as a coach. Okay, I'm going to get flamed by all the Southern Baptists, so have at it.

Well, IMHO, we ran off a guy who is head and shoulders better than what we kept. Granted, he had an attitude, or that's what we've heard, but he certainly would have been a much better, on the field performer, than Stoudt. We have who we have, though, and I'm accepting of it, but I'd feel a lot more comfortable having him as the backup, rather than what we have. I hope Cole has a lights out performance against OU. It would be great for his legacy and for our team.

It's obvious to everyone except stubborn Dabo that Stoudt can't play QB at this level. Remember Stoudt didn't lose the job to Watson. Watson was just better. Imagine how frustrating it would have been for Kelly to hear how Stoudt had earned the right to be the starter just by being there all these years. Dabo is so stubborn that he will play Stoudt when he should be working on our backup. Stoudt won't even be here next year and he will surely lose the game against Oklahoma and that will leave things on a down note. We won't even be able to compete with Stoudt. It will be like the UGA game all over again because our defense will be tired and won't get any rest.
I WOULD LOVE TO BE WRONG BUT YOU CAN TAKE WHAT I JUST SAID TO THE BANK. BANK ON IT.

From his highlights, and from what he showed us the few times he got to play, he is pretty good. I can't imaging he "couldn't beat out Cole". I don't think his issues were lack of talent, at all. I think it was strictly attitude, and seeing someone who you know is not as good as you be constantly uplifted on the depth chart can bring on a bad attitude.

Indeed, it does. I don't know how poisonous his attitude may have been in the locker room or in practices, but on the field he looked pretty good to me, other than in the Spring game in which the format didn't favor his skills. The QB's were down with the touch that format didn't favor his style. He is most effective when he is running and throwing off the run, and sometimes that involves getting touched, even though he might escape. I never saw him practice nor did I see any interaction with other team mates off the field, and that is an intangible dynamic that sometimes surfaces when a HS star isn't "the guy" anymore. We have gone our separate ways, though, and I wish him well. I expect he shines at Ole Miss, though.

I don't believe that Chad couldn't beat out Cole Stoudt. That's absurd. This is all about a misplaced loyalty and egregious poor judgement on the part of the coaching staff. It surely cost us the Ga./ Tech game, and probably the Fla. State game. And yet, here we go again: Stoudt, Stoudt, Stoudt, ad nauseam. If they start him against Oklahoma, our D may be able to bail us out, but I doubt it. The team knows the truth, and play accordingly. Thank god, this is the last game he can ever play for Clemson.

If he was being disrespectful, selfish and thus a cancer in the locker room, then Dabo had to do what he did.
I do blame Dabo and Chad for placing so much faith in him in the first place given his attitude before he even stepped foot on campus. Should have seen that one coming from a mile away. They made some poor recruiting decisions IMO (Bellamy) along the way, but some good ones too (Watkins, Boyd, Watson, Bryant).
Alas, it is what it is.

You may have more information than I do, but I'm not sure that Chad was guilty of all the things you accuse him of. I can certainly understand his frustration seeing the love affair that the staff apparently had with a no-talent like Cole Stoudt. And they will apparently start Cole in the bowl game. Unbelievable!!

A great post that tells it like it is. Dabo is unreasonably stubborn, and Cole Stoudt is an inferior QB who shouldn't even be playing at a program like Clemson. He represents a terrible recruiting mistake on the staff's part. Now, they are saying that Nick Scheussler can't play. I've heard differently. So either there's politics involved here or they made another terrible recruiting mistake. You hit the nail on the head. Good job.

There's a reason for that, and the fact that it's never happened in the way it happened to him (i.e. kicked off the team on the spot, when that was not the original plan) speaks volumes IMO. He was poisonous to the team. Sometimes no matter how good someone's raw talent and dedication are, you have to cut them out before their poison spreads.

I don't disagree with that, but I had rather have his talent at QB for this game than what we have seen from Cole Stoudt this year (and I was one of the ones who thought Cole would be great. I was dead wrong). All I say is that Kelly is the best QB of the 2. He fits our offense much better than Cole. Still, we have who we have, and I hope he plays like an All-American in this game!
