The demise of DJU

When looking back at this situation, the question that keeps coming up is What happened to the DJU of his Fr. Year vs. the version we have seen since? IMHO it’s a perfect storm of several factors:
1. Focus: NIL came along and that offseason was spent pedaling his NIL brand and not working on his craft or conditioning. Showing up at 265 lbs. in the ridiculous pimp suit for the UGA game was a fire bearer of what was in store

2. Competition: Brice transferred and phommachanh couldny play dead in a cowboy movie. Although seldom discussed the Missed evaluation of talent with TP was really bad and had lasting damage

3. UGA: They were loaded and Kirby and this D had bad intentions. The psychological beatdown they put on DJ culminating with the pick 6 set the ball rolling for the hesitancy and ptsd we still see today

4. Big Dave: orchestrator of #1 above combined with his marital transgressions dealt the final psychological blow to a kid seeing his family ripped apart. This is when we saw so much of the bad body language and uninspired energy. Let me say that I think Dabo should be here as long as he wants but the failure to remove Dju from the Coot game his last year goes down as Dabos biggest coaching blunder

Honestly to me he doesn't look like a bad qb He will never be a 5 star guy but he can be a game manager and win games with the right cast around him. What sticks out to me is how every staff seems to be so conservative with dju throwing downfield. He must sill be weak there.

that point. Opponents feared the unknown. Now that DJ is known, nobody fears him.

He might make the NFL as a practice team QB. But he'll never live up the hype that surrounded him after high school.

Screw Calford.

He still only makes one read and that’s where the ball goes. I saw it yesterday, I saw it last year, I saw it 2 years ago and I saw it 3 years ago.

Yesterday’s commentators touched on it once during the game. He had very tight coverage outside to the right, where he threw an incompletion, but he had a wide open receiver 15yds straight down the middle.

Apparently, based on watching him for 4 years, on most plays, he only knows where one receiver is and that’s where he goes.

Every once in a while, 2 or 3 times in a game at most, you’ll see him look left, then center, then right…..but it is rare. He’s limited to running between 1/3 to 1/2 of the offense, by his limited ability to mentally process the plays that have been called.

If he makes an NFL squad in any form or fashion, then I’m going to try out. I watched DJ drop the ball backwards on 3rd down after digging us into a hole against a very inferior Syracuse team. He may be a nice guy, but he is the worst college QB I’ve ever seen.

He should have changed positions ala Patrick Sapp

…appearances than they should have.

I mean, he lost to Notre Dame. It was a loss. Trevor beat the crap out of them later in the postseason.

He even lost the O&W game before his Sophomore season and everybody just kept drinking the Koolaid.

He was never good in College.

Yes he lost the ND game but he also lit them up. I never saw that same guy again. Maybe it was the fact ND didn't know how to game plan him since he was an unknown. Who knows but he has settled into being an avg qb at best. That DJ yesterday was the same DJ of the last 3 years.

They figured him out in OT. Once they brought the house it was lights out for DJ.

Did DJU play defense vs ND? Some of you people have the strangest

Don’t forget the 3 years being coached by Streeter being a very plausible contributor to his demise.

Wrong!!! Streeter was not the Problem! How have Tony Elliott and Jeff Scott fared when they did not have a DW or TL at QB???

When DJU filled in for Trevor in 2020 and had the huge game in the OT loss to Notre Dame, it looked like we had our future QB and all would be well. DJU is not a great QB and never will be, but what all the DJU haters refuse to see is the skill players he had against Notre Dame, ETN, Amari Rodgers and Cornell Powell who had 352 of the 439 yards passing we had, were in the NFL when we only scored 3 points against Georgia the next season.

I agree DJU is just average but any QB is only as good as the people around him. One game does not make a career and that game and DJU need to be in the rear view mirror.

DJU's struggles seem to rise when expectations are at their highest,

and that's a real problem if you're the QB for a team with championship aspirations.

The Notre Dame game in 2020 was a no-lose scenario really. Nobody expected DJU to come in that game and perform out of his brain and lead us to victory. There was a chance we could win, but the pressure really wasn't there as we had T Law coming back the following week and a chance to avenge Notre Dame later in the ACCCG, which we did, convincingly. It was a freebie for DJU, and he performed admirably.

Come 2021 and expectations were off the chart. He laid egg after egg. It was brutal. Come mid-season and the shine was off - we ran the table with 6 straight. 2022 we were forecasted behind Wake, NC State, and FSU in pre-season picks, so what does DJU do? Rattles off YTD numbers similar to DW4 and TL16 in rolling over these upstarts on the way to an 8-0 record. Then on the map again - and into oblivion.

FSU and DJU certainly had all the hype and high expectations heading into this season and yesterday's game. While he didn't lose the game for them, he just doesn't seem to have it in him to win those for you either, and here we are.

I was listening on XM radio, and the announcer said DJ threw a beautiful spiral to an open receiver 5 yards out of bounds. The analyst said 100% of those are incomplete! 😀

dj was so bad that i often wondered if he was sandbagging to help family members win gambling on games (something I wouldn't have put past his dad). As it turns out, I was wrong; he was just that bad.

He lacks situational awareness. Several of my daughter's friends had experiences where he walked directly behind their cars when they were backing out of parking spaces. Perhaps he assumed everyone had cars with backup cameras so he didn't need to watch where he was going, but we weren't totally shocked that someone who didn't notice moving Toyotas also didn't notice defending Dawgs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Could have also been an inflated sense of self awareness in combo****

The demise was simple, he was never asked to make reads in HS. He had the bigger faster wrs and could just throw streaks to guys behind the dbs every play. Never had to throw with anticipation and timing. There's a reason he looked good his freshmen year too, Travis Etienne and screen plays against defenses that did not realize this kid can't throw people open. BC and ND played exclusively zone and guys were stationary standing wide open between zones.

Look, this is what he can do

Aug 26, 2024, 12:13 AM
Reply

1. Throw bubble screens
2. Throw slants where the ball travels no more than 10 yards in the air
3. Throw to an open receiver who has run a hook pattern and has been standing in the same spot for five seconds
4. Fall forward for a first down with a yard to go
5. Get happy feet on a third-down blitz and take a sack or overthrow the receiver
6. Hand off the ball to a linebacker for six the other way

What he cannot do:
1. Throw a go or corner route to a receiver without it being out of bounds or five yards too long
2. Get an all-you-can-eat NLI at Bojangles and come into the season at a healthy weight
