While I'm not thrilled about this hire and Allen's track record

I have to admit, the guy says all the right things and makes you want to run through a brick wall. His chemistry with Dabo also seems to be huge. That does at least give me a bit of optimism.
One thing I am concerned about though is hearing that Allen won't be out recruiting and Garrett likely won't be anymore either. Dabo also mentioned that the coordinators will become more NFL like with running their side of the ball and it sounds like Boulware and Boyd will be LB and QB coach respectively. This is risky.

Especially Ben. I’d like to see him develop a few more seasons before taking over LB’s, personally. He’s the best field general I can recall, but it’s also one of the most complicated roles on the defense.

Could be one of those deals where it's a complete homerun or a complete failure. Similar to the Wes promotion.

I don't remember Wes having a year as DC where his team was top 5 in red zone. Its not the same definite improvement. Its only one year with such dominant figures, but then again it was his most recent year

Yep. It will be a full time commitment, especially going on the road, and he’s got a young family and runs a business in different areas. And no coaching experience. And no, coaching up and encouraging housewives doing cardio and weightlifting doesn’t count.

full responsibility over either room, just that they know would be on the road recruiting in place of the coordinators. He clearly said Allen would begin his work positionally with LB's. Planning from that standpoint, but that this type move would free him up to work closer with all rooms. Boyd has worked closely with Garrett for 2 years now. He may get the title QB coach. Ben may get the title LB coach. But neither will be doing anything that either Garrett or Allen says to do, and both will be hands on at those positions. We're not switching Cade complely away from Garret in his senior year.

If I remember his exact words paraphrasing it was that they were working on the details of Ben and Thomas to be elevated at LB.

senior Tom will be directly involved in that room in a hands on way. Same as Riley would if Boyd is given a title with QB's. This is primarily about recruiting right now, and staff development

Out of curiosity, would you feel the same if it was Brent enables coming back and doing the same thing so he could be home with his wife more? Meaning if venables was watching over boulwares coaching. It’s the same here. It’s not as if you don’t have a person on staff that knows a thing or two about coaching LB backing him up.

"He’s the best field general I can recall" - From my seat, I'd rank Skalski over Boulware in that regard. Just a difference of opinion.

I'm more optimistic about the coordinator/assistant role adjustment.
To me it gives the coordinators more room to act as managers and help everywhere as needed versus spending a majority of their time developing one position.
Boulware and Boyd may not quite be ready to lead those positions, but with a coordinator not coaching a specific position, I think it gives them a better chance to mentor the position coaches all around.
Time will tell. Could be wrong and it's a big bust.

As Dabo mentioned...he's coached where he really didn't have the "weapons" he had in 2024 and will in 2025.
Seems he made the most of the opportunity when given it.

Cignetti took the best players from a top 20 scoring defense and added them to what IU had. The point is it wasn't the same team or schedule Alen had every year being in 0310 state, UM, and PSU's division.

I believe you could also include when he became the DC at Indiana as a good year.
Notably, Indiana was the 120th ranked defense in terms of total yards per game giving up near 500 yards per game in the 2015-16 season. When he became the Indiana DC in 2016-17, they became the 39th ranked defense in the same statistic giving up 380 yards per game. That’s a pretty substantial improvement.

“I became a head coach and I tried to call the defense for a few years, and that was good, but it just was too much after a while…” -Tom Allen at the introductory press conference.
Was there another time he mentioned coaching defense? Maybe there was, and I missed it.

Why do so many ignore those defenses from his HC years when he was calling it?

I just reread the quote, and he said he tried calling it a few years, your statement did not make that distinction, and implied he was “running the defense” his entire stint at Indiana.
Do you not agree with this?
You also indicated he had 10 years of crap defenses, and it appears he was not calling the defense during at least a portion of the time you referenced.
https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-forum/message/already-36271428
Would you agree he was not calling the defense during part of the 10 year period you referenced?

That’s inaccurate. His first year as Indiana DC he had one of the biggest defensive turnarounds statistically in history. I’ve already posted the stats in one of your previous whining threads.

The rest of his years at Indiana? He was the head coach the rest of those years. In his presser he said he tried doing both head coach and defensive coordinator but became too much so he just stuck to head coaching. When he was strictly defensive coordinator they did well. His first year as head coach I believe they had the 27th ranked defense. Compared to like 120 2 years early. Thats amazing. Not sure when he handed off the defensive reigns to someone else. The defense certainly fell off after that year.

You are not a fan if you either watched the announcement live or recorded and do not think Coach Allen is the right guy. As far as Tahj Boyd, he is already on staff but not an assistant coach so nothing new there. I don't get the Boulware deal because he is not listed on the staff.

Dabo didn’t say Boulware was the linebacker coach. Part of the reason Allen was hired is because he is also a linebacker coach. Boulware’s role is to motivate them to hit and tackle hard and to sell Clemson and that attitude to recruits

I personally thought Allen did a good job at Indiana and also helped to improve the level of talent on that team. He also helped show YOU CAN win at Indiana. I recall a few years ago they gave the Vols all they wanted in a Bowl game.

He wasn’t on the road while being at Penn St. Teams are all going to something similar. I don’t think it’s a big deal. You have to get the recruits on campus for their official visit anyway. Believe the coordinators will be plenty involved in their recruiting while on campus. They also can stay in touch through phone calls & social media with any recruits. So not a big deal.

You should start journaling. It's very cathartic.

I like the Allen hire. I question the decision to not use coordinators for recruiting.
Ben Boulware going on the road solo to recruit, I have reservations about. I definitely see Boulware connecting with the players and most fathers but I'm wondering how the junkyard dog will do in front of mama. I don't doubt for a second Boulware will be an intense teacher of the game actually not worried about him developing as a coach, recruiting is my concern.
I'm the opposite with Tajh. I can see him having a charming charisma to recruits and their families. Wonder if he's the guy to coach QBs, he wasn't exactly known for his mechanics or footwork. Might be a better coordinator down the road bc he gets the game and had a feel for when to take his shots but it's the small intricate details about qb play I'm curious about.

When I hear every team is doing this I’m totally ok with this. Also our biggest strength in recruiting is on campus visits. Dabo also never said he wouldn’t go on the road. When it comes to big name recruits I bet he’ll be paying them a visit.

I just don't know who we realistically could've gotten that's remarkably better. We needed someone with experience and we got that. It's a homerun hire as far as I'm concerned.

I'm certainly more optimistic about it than I was a few days ago.

He certainly has a ton of experience but there were other's that have fielded top 10 defenses multiple years and that's something he doesn't have on his resume. My only concern. It may certainly work out and I hope it does.

Honestly, I don't know who everyone thinks we were going to get.

BV isn't coming back (unless he gets canned at Oklahoma and doesn't want to be a head coach anymore...in which case, come on down!). We got a high-energy, culture-fitting defensive coordinator who just left a Big Ten, top 10 defense that made it to the semifinals in the playoffs. That's a get. We'll see if it works out.
I can't speak for recruiting...but that's not really a DC hire issue...I don't know if Dabo is right that this is the way its trending for college football but again...we'll see how it goes. These recruiting visits are more like business transactions these days anyway.

This is the new model teams have been using for about four years now. It gives the coordinators more time to focus on install and coaching. One more instance where we had fallen behind. This is an overdue change and we should see dividends immediately.
