Watching Purnell & Co. Get hammered...

Feb 12, 2014, 9:38 PM

Makes me wonder how he turned our program into something very respectable, but can't do nearly the same at DePaul. I know he's having a tough time getting Chicago kids to stay home, but he had a hard time landing big-time talent at Clemson, too. I guess our talent is just better? He hasn't gotten close to the NCAAs with DePaul.

Yeah I've posted before about there are numerous articles of how he isnt getting anywhere recruiting in the city. Maybe the style of play or something. And maybe kids today dont recall Depoaul; was once a consistent power in hoopsI

Maybe

Purnell's track record of jumping ship to another program with no notice is influencing the decision of some local talented players.....certainly a bunch of talent comes out of the Chicago area regularly

Those kids have AAU coaches that have to be taken care of.

I don't think Purnell caters to their needs. Just my opinion.

He beat up on a lot weak OOC teams before conference

play started. I remember a couple years they would start out 14-0, 17-0, and then be lucky to finish .500 in ACC play. We were better athletically than a lot of teams we played but not better basketball wise. It was fun to watch but our offense was dependent on turnovers, and against teams with smart ball handlers, they ate our press alive. It's a shame we couldn't do more with some of the talent we had on those teams, Rivers, Stitt, Booker, etc.

He also took us to ACC finals for 2nd time in history

Don't run down what he did here.

No doubt, I wasn't trying to knock what he did here. I hated

to see him go. I just think he hit a wall with what his style of play could accomplish in league play. We missed on some pretty big time recruits towards the end of his time here. We always had really good athletes but not good basketball players. I think that was evident by his lack of success in the big dance.

From what I've heard it's and impossible situation

Highly political ABA issues

I don't follow Depaul, but I remember reading a few articles when he was hired about how the local coaches were mad about the situation. Apparently they thought Depaul should have consulted them first, so it sounded like they were going to try to give Purnell a hard time up there with recruits. Getting guys in might be a problem for him.

Purnell did a lot of good stuff here. Obviously, I don't like the way he left, but I'm not going to run down what he did here.

Two issues

Feb 12, 2014, 11:30 PM

as noted by everyone else, he doesn't play Chicago style games in recruiting, so the Chicago coaches/handlers don't help.

2. His best recruit, Shane Larkin, made it to campus, but withdrew to go to Miami for medical reasons. Larkin is a player he was going to build around and very well could be successful with right now.
