Set off a covid firestorm this morning...
Aug 9, 2021, 10:44 AM
|
|
Email was sent requiring masks for the unvaxed and recommended for the vaxed. Reason being, we had a covid + from an unvaxed, which means we had to send home a close contact unvaxed.
The vaxed do not count as close contacts. And, apparently, if you are masked, dhec won't count that as a close contact. So, logically, the policy made sense in our heads.
I knew people were sensitive on the subject, but man I had no clue how sensitive. Tears were shed, scarlet letter, etc. We just said screw it...masks for everyone until things settle down. Can't have people missing work.

Get the vaccine. Went on to say we know the virus this time. We're not as bad as last time. Yada Yada.
Give him two more weeks and he won't have a press conference. Or if he does he will light into Biden.
We have 1124 people hospitalized in SC with 300 in ICU according to stats DHEC somehow won't know until tomorrow. A week like last week and we are at record hospitalizations. Another week and we're worse than last time like Florida is now. 300/1100 is a worse ICU ratio than last time as well. Expand that and I dunno.
Goes on about common sense. Common sense says don't believe him. There have been countries, and states, who are months ahead of us.
Then talks about personal responsibility. Lol. Jerry Springer isn't on the air anymore for a reason.

I can't wait to see the ######## here after some school districts try to go against Gov Leghorn and require masks. I think they should be able to, myself. They can regulate everything else the student wears through a dress code. I don't see it as any different than requiring a uniform or banning Big Johnson t-shirts (shout out to ryanadidas®).

I love all the people with young kids talking about how it has no impact on older kids' well being. That's pure bullllshit. I'll let the parents of the two kids at my kids' school who committed suicide since last May know that the bizarre, anxiety-inducing, impersonal conditions they have at school have nothing to do with their well-being.
High school sucks enough already in normal times, and it would be God-awful being a high schooler and going to school in the weird conditions that we seem to expect them to accept with a smile and a hop in their step. I admire thehell out of any kid who's of that age and hasn't let the past year impact them.

child's ability to learn. Does it inhibit social interaction, probably, but the ending of social events and asking people to keep apart were WAAAYYYY more impactful to the mental well-being of high school kids. I do not have a high school age kid, but WifeOf is a High School counselor so I hear about alot of it. I know exactly what you are talking about and, by no means, was what I was saying meaning that what you are talking about isn't going on.

are going through. This may not be a real health concern for you, but it is for others.
I could easily say about the kids whose parents say their kids have trouble breathing or have anxiety attacks when wearing a masks that it's just hysteria of the falsehood that people are breathing in CO2...or not wanting to be 'sheeple'...but I won't.
In either case, the parents' beliefs and push that is overwhelmingly affecting the kids.

Their feelings about their day to day experience at school stems from….wait for it….their day to day experience at school and how it makes them feel.
Yes, parents have impact on their kids—-it would be stupid to argue otherwise, but teen suicides weren’t up last year because mom and dad didn’t put a happy spin on their school experience. It’s not just the masks. The distancing was really weird too I am sure. At football games last year at our school the kids couldn’t sit in the bleachers and sat on a hill outside the stadium with a security guard yelling at them if they got within 6 feet of each other. Repeat that experience daily in class and feelings of isolation are bound to arise.

ITT we're discussing the real and observable impacts of sweeping policies and mandates that haven't really shown any discernible impact on the rate of COVID spread, which is what they're intended to impede. I fail to see how it's disregarding children's feelings when I point out the unintended consequences are very likely doing more harm than good.

anxiety and angst ridden children...The hysteria driven COVID restrictions/rules/whatever you want to call them are what's doing that. If a child is suffering from anxiety because people aren't wearing a mask, the adults in their life need to get help with their own mental well being, because they're doing far more damage to the kid than COVID would. Saving morbidly obese granny at the expense of my kids mental health and social development isn't really a trade I'm personally willing to make. I know everybody knows a 22 year old triathlete who got COVID and died, but the data indicates that's exceedingly rare. If children are becoming this neurotic over COVID given the risk it poses them, we all need to step back and re-evaluate our approach.
So who is really lacking empathy here? The people demanding we make all sorts of concessions and changes to society in an effort to help assuage their paranoia to the detriment of everyone's mental health, or the people like myself who don't think the panicky knee jerk reactions are really helping to solve anything?
When do we draw the line here? When is enough enough? You can't mask up and keep everything semi-locked down forever. Well, I guess you can, but the subsequent mental illness will be prolific. Cue Tiggity telling me nobody really locked down now....
Maybe those parents you reference are being hysterical too? That could certainly be true. There's a lot of it going around on all sides, which is we can't have a genuinely honest conversation about what to do.

yes, they should be grateful for the opportunity to smell their own breath for 7-8 hours with a quick mask removal break to eat lunch. Being in your prime "interested in the opposite sex" years and having zero clue if a person is flirting with you is fantastic, I'm sure. PE Class in a mask? Pure awesomeness. My 6 year old has absolutely no problems wearing a mask.
But, he also touches his mask and his face non stop. You have to treat your mask like your hands have blood on them. You can't touch it all the time. Kids do not understand that. It's counter-productive to have young kids wear a mask.

respiratory particles through the airways moreso than contact with contaminated surfaces. COVID is not as stable on surfaces. So the primary mode of transmission is via breathing in viral particles. Moreover if everyone is everyone masks, that will eliminate the number of respiratory droplets that reach the surfaces. Hence the push for all to wear them as it helps to eliminate the possible number of viral particles in the air. And yes, I know that the viral particles are smaller than the masks...but they do not just travel all by themselves.
Now in the cases of noroviruses, that is mostly through contact with contaminated surfaces, drinking after someone, etc. So it is possible that that virus could spread more as a result of mask wearing vs not.

you actually meant it like that. It may not be a perfect solution, but it's better than nothing.
Would you advise or rally against a high schooler (if they are going to have sex) being told to wear a rubber because they aren't 100% effective since some kids maybe don't know how to use them properly, some are better quality than others, they break or they slip off?
No that's idiotic. you tell all those high schoolers that if you're going to do it, wear a rubber. Because it's the better than the alternative of not wearing one.

Do you have any clue how hard it is to work in an Amish joke around here?

it's just, the Amish connection is not great. I'm a conservative religious person for sure, but an aversion to technology, which is the calling card of the Amish, has never been displayed by me.

TANGENT ALERT

I was at a rum bar front beach yesterday and two dudes from Ohio (yes, they were from Ohio, not just me thinking it) were talking to a big girl next to them from Pennsylvania (I know that because she was from PA to anyone who would listen).
They two Ohioans kept saying "WE"RE IN SC AND WANT TO HEAR HOOTIE" so a dude who was a bad guitar player/singer played a "version" of "Let her cry", then Wagon Wheel". When guitar dude started with "Let her cry", I looked at the Ohio guy and said "Well..you wanted to hear Hootie".
I don't think he even knew what I was talking about.

In order of annoyingness, my fully liquid, ever changing rating system based on interactions from this weekend is:
1. New York--Old man and woman--he's wearing a Fedora that looks like he stole from Sammy Davis, making lots of "Why do I have to wait in a line at a convenience store? I'm rich from NY" faces in front of me while I'm buying beer. Old woman with him buys 3 packs of cigarettes..while wearing a corona mask. Maybe it's just me, but I get some humor from this. Which one will take you out sooner-Covid, or cancer from smoking Virgina Slimes for the last 50 years?
2. New Jersey-ite, mid 30's dude, NJ accent: "YO PARRTTTYYYYY!! WOOOOOO!!!...then, vomit" while walking down the middle of ocean blvd. Also, a Benz with NJ plates sets off their car alarm for about 10 minutes in front of the Dinge-ee, while a guitar dude was belting out some Luke Combs and playing guitar. He got disgusted with the horn going off and stopped. I would have too.
3. Ohio--- "Yeah, I'm from Ohio AND a redneck. Wanna make something of it?" Also heard two minutes previous saying how an old busted mid 80's Trans Am parked across the street was "probably one of the best cars ever".
4. Pennsylvania--Fat chick, drunk: "We never get to the beach (even though they have beaches on freshwater) But we're here to DRINK! WOOO! Hey, who is buying my $9 pina coladas? Thanks Ohio guy!"
5. North Carolina--man in what some may call a "muscle shirt" with armpits that are cut out to his waist, yelling at wife/gf/date/someone he met yesterday--"FSCK YOU! I'M SICK OF YOUR #####!!" (slams car door, burns rubber leaving parking spot front beach, almost runs over two kids OTW out). And like clockwork, an hour later the same car RIDES MYASS down my street in a 25 mph zone, which naturally meant I had to do 20, and made him wait for me as I backed into my driveway. He FLOORED it passing me first 1/2 second chance he got. I hope I made the rest of his day.

I liked the story, but jazz it up a little, like this

|

Something like you said "Well you wanted Hootie" and he said "Yeah, I did....you got a problem with it?"
Then you spit at his feet and said, "Feelin lucky, carpetbagger? Get some."
He threw a haymaker, which you ducked, gave him two quick rabbit punches to the adams apple, followed by a roundhouse kick to the face which sent him through the plate glass window into the street.
Then you looked around the room, said "This joint is locals only now....if you have a salt life sticker on your car, GTF Out, followed by other Ohio guy and fat PA girl scrambling out as fast as they could.
