I honestly can't remember them ranked in top 10. I recall them being 13-15th. I may remember them 9th under Purnell. I don't recall where we got with Ellis but the ACC was stout then and bunch of teams had shoe money in that era. I know we were ranked but not sure how high.

Found it.
"Rick Barnes was the first coach in Clemson history to take the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament three consecutive years. Barnes coached Clemson into post-season play every year of his tenure and to the NCAA in 1996, 1997, and 1998. The Tigers' top season was his third year, when he coached the Tigers to a 16–1 start and a #2 national ranking. In the season, he opened with a 79–71 overtime victory against defending National Champion Kentucky. The team ended the season 23–10 and ranked #8 in the final USA Today poll."

That was just a couple yrs after I graduated and I had a few yrs where I lost track of Clemson sports except for football.
Honestly, I was chasing my ex-bride. I would have been better off chasing Clemson sports.

That was when I was able to attend every home game. (It was back when a win was a win, not the idiocy that currently prevails in manipulating the rankings in college sports.)

As a point of reference, in 1990, Clemson was regular season "champs" in the ACC, but only ranked 17th in the AP.

In 97 under Rick Barnes Clemson played Wake both teams ranked 2 and 3.

A number of week's (like 12 times) in 97-98.
Started at 5 in 1998 then crapped the bed.
Purnell got us to 10 a few times in 2008-09.
and of course now.

That’s the era of ACC basketball domination everyone refers to. Dean Smith, Coach K, Dave Odom, Gary Williams, Bobby Cremins. We played 13 top 25 teams, and everybody in the ACC twice.

The only Clemson basketball game I've ever attended wasn't that long ago and I'm pretty sure we were in the top 5 as well as Wake Forest, pretty sure it was a top 5 match up

It was 96-97, I typo'd the above to trigger my favorite "fact checker", but they don't fact check 15+ years ago for reasons I cannot divulge (personal, alphabet people stuff). Its a Shame.

And they WERE #2 with possible chance to be #1 but lost.
Also as poster said above we were at #8 once..so this present team has a little ways to go since #13 now.
