Dynasties in college football?

2

Oct 25, 2023, 6:43 PM

For me, I'm CU class of '86, it would be a team that is relevant... a contender for a Natty, for several years or more.

I would say currently Alabama is still in the midst and has been since maybe Saban's 2nd year. Before that, FSU, who finished top 5 for I believe - 14 years straight.

Behind them, Clemson had their run of about 7 years, and hopefully we can kickstart it back soon. Florida and SoCal had theirs, not for that long though. UGA may be at the apex of one, and prior to them, Nebraska. Maybe Ohio State fits in there... who am I missing and what do you guys think?

Alabama Bear Bryant and Nick Saban

Florida State 99-11-1

USC Overall, the eight-year stretch featured an 81-13-3 record and three national championships.

Nebraska. Nebraska sent legendary coach Tom Osborne out with a shared championship in 1997 (Michigan). He retired with a 255-49-3 record, so his entire tenure was basically a dynasty.

Notre Dame compiled a 36-0-2 record from 1946 to 1949, winning three national championships and finishing No. 2 in 1948. The program also celebrated two Heisman Trophy winners

Miami 'Canes amassed a 96-13 record from 1983 to 1991 and even had a shot at a national title in 1992 but lost to Alabama.

Oklahoma The 11-season span included an outrageous 107-8-2 record, 11 league championships and three national titles.

Leads me into I think a separate post sometime, who was the best college football team of all time. I'd have to say 1995 Nebraska or LSU in 2019. Just based on teams I watched on TV, "eyeball test" and stats, and who they beat... Can we put Tigers 2018 in the top 5? I think we can.

1995 Nebraska

The way they eviscerated Florida shouldn’t be legal.

Oklahoma in the 50s

Bud Wilkenson
Bama in the 60's (Bear Bryant)
...Bama had 3 straight down years (68-70)
Bama in the 70's
FSU in 90's (actually started in the 80s)
Clemson and Bama in the teens.

Not sure who I would say in the 80's or 2000's.

And, I'm not old enough to remember if Army had a dynasty in the 40s.

1971 Oklahoma Nebraska "Game of the Century". Best game with two of the best teams in the country! No 1 vs No 2 and both undefeated!

2001 Miami Hurricanes were one of the greatest teams ever. They had an insane number of players get draft, something like 20 +. There was a really interesting 30 for 30 show on ESPN about them.

Of course the 2018 Tigers rank up there too!
