Job question
Jul 26, 2013, 2:47 PM
|
|
My real life dilemma - I currently work in the financial world and make "x" in annual salary. I currently have 2 job opportunities in front of me...
(1) Stay at my current employer (10 years service) and accept what has been my dream job for 5 years, with a salary of "x" + 5K a year.
(2) Join a new employer for a job similar to what I've been doing for years, with a salary of "x" + 14K a year. Lose roughly 6 days a year of vacation compared to what I earn now.
It really comes down to this - money or happiness? Struggling, and have to make a decision by Monday. Any thoughts or insights are appreciated!

Thankfully, both in Fortune 500. However, that hampers my ability to negotiate salary & vacation since both adhere to corporate standards.

Have you tried negotiating comparable vacation? Usually companies have flexibility on some of those things

Jump. If you are sure the work won't totally suck, jump.

If the work isn't awesome, there is a chance you can come back to current job in a few months and get far more raise than you'll ever get by staying put. There is nearly no reason to be loyal to a company these days. They find the loyal people and #### them every chance they get.

A whole lot of it depends on what "x" is.
Jul 26, 2013, 2:51 PM

If x is $5K and Job 2 is quadrupling your salary, that's a good bit different than if x is $175K, and Job 2 only increases your salary by ~10%.

Dream job would get me out of high pressure sales environment on a daily basis, with the opportunity to teach up & coming financial professionals.

stress, as it turns out was not even close to worth it for me in most cases. I could always use more money, but now when I walk out the door at the end of the work day and head for home, I leave my work behind for the most part, and when I put my head on the pillow every night, I sleep soundly without waking up in the middle of the night thinking about work. I can't put a price on that.
Don't do it just for the money.

definitely not keeping current job, so with 5K increase at my current company vs. 14K increase at the new company, I would be looking at a 9K difference.
With current company, the new job is exactly what I've wanted to do in my field for years. With the new company, it would be more of the same of what I do now.
As for "x", it's not 5K, but unfortunately not 100K either!
