Politicians are working on a trophy for the Coots

Jul 2, 2014, 7:14 PM

When earlier this year the SEC elected to stick with permanent cross-divisional rivalry games and break up its longtime Arkansas-South Carolina pairing to create a more geographically sensible Arkansas-Missouri series, it created a new annual "rivalry" with scarcely any history at all: Texas A&M vs. the newly available Gamecocks.

But where there's a will to create extracurricular motivation for an annual college football game, there's a way. Columbia, S.C. newspaper The State reported this week that a South Carolina political official has worked with Texas governor Rick Perry and Palmetto State governor Nikki Haley to introduce a victory trophy for Gamecocks-Aggies, a bronze sculpture of South Carolina-educated Alamo hero James Butler Bonham.

According to former South Carolina Republican and Perry state capmaign chair Katon Dawson, Perry discussed the trophy with Haley, at Dawson's suggestion, when the two met in 2013. Dawson told the State the trophy would be unveiled at a party the night before the teams meet for their season openers in Columbia on Aug. 28.

Gag me.

Jul 2, 2014, 7:24 PM

Does it make anyone else sick that our Clemson alum governor gives so much attention to the coots?

She wouldn't survive in Columbia very long if she didn't. The legislature is crawling with coot alums/fans.

That's sure going to be more tax payers money wasted...it's the sec though, surprised both teams don't get a participation trophy

Guess the coots need some way to fill those empty cases***

The Hardee's Trophy has stayed in the same case for a while now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That makes 3 trophies

Jul 3, 2014, 9:20 AM

And one of them isn't even permanent

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

At least we established the rivalry before creating a trophy

Jul 3, 2014, 9:19 AM [ in reply to Only slightly dumber than ]

And for a while it actually was a pretty good rivalry. Trying to fabricate some sort of trophy for a game that hasn't even been played yet reeks of desperation.

A trophy for USuC that's based on a failure? Sounds right***

The logic just isn't there. How can you call a program that has beaten you five years in a row by double digits and one that everyone is pre season ranking much higher than your program a failure? Makes the loser look even worse.

But, but, but... won't the USUC players just steal the trophy if USUC ever wins it?

SCU has said they don't want his name...

Jul 3, 2014, 11:40 AM

On the trophy since he was a slave owner. SCU already has their own history of owning slaves.

Our country won't go on forever, if we stay soft as we are now. There won't be any America because some foreign soldiery will invade us and take our women and breed a hardier race.
