also Ripken or Yount over Jeter at SS
Pete Rose needs to be in there too somewhere. Maybe he should be at 3B. Or maybe DH since he played almost every position.

Brett was clutch, esp. in postseason
Jul 10, 2014, 4:16 PM
|
|
dude was money in the playoffs.
Brett 21 yrs Schmidt 18 yrs games 2707 2404 AB 10349 8352 Runs 1583 1506 push Hits 3154 2234 Brett+++ 2B 665 408 Brett 3B 137 59 Brett HR 317 548 MJS++ RBI 1595 1595 push BB 1096 1507 MJS+ SO 908 1883 Brett+++ AVG .305 .267 Brett+++ Fld % @ 3B .951 .955 push SB 201 174 push
Brett played 300 more games and had almost 40 points higher on his career batting average, 900 more hits, and 900 less strikeouts.
The only thing Schmidt could do better than Brett was hit the long ball. He had 200 more HRs, but yet still finished his career with the EXACTLY the same number of RBIs (weird).

9 Bretts would beat 9 Schmidts every day of the week
Jul 10, 2014, 7:32 PM
[ in reply to I don't know about "mile," but Schmidt was better. ] |

Brett could do it all.
If he needed to hit a HR, he could hit a HR. You ever watch him in the playoffs? Of course not, he was before your time. I did. Both were fabulous players, saw both of them play in person many times.
Schmidt drew gasps in batting practice with his raw power. But Brett was the man you wanted in the batter's box with the game on the line.

In the other 99.5% of games, Schmidt was better.
Sure, if the game is on the line and you needed a single, I'd rather have Brett, too. That doesn't mean he was the better player.

Chipper Jones should be in that conversation

[ in reply to I'll take Brett over Schmidt at 3B ] |

Seriously. Obviously his fielding wasn't where Schmidt's was, but he might have been the best hitter ever at 3B.
If we're going on fielding ability alone, obviously Brookes Robinson was the best 3B ever.

Not just fielding.

But he's the only one who was a below average third baseman in the field. He's close with Brett and Mathews offensively. Schmidt is the best among the four on both sides of the ball.
