Supposedly the movie blue chips staring nick Nolte was based on Locke at Clemson. everything he was doing in the '70's are completely legal now. seems like the players prior to being a head coach hated his guts.

before my time, but a skip wise, a tree Rollins, and an amazing group of supporting cast.could be superstars today.

if you can find it, "Caught in the net" is an amazing read. I feel like Locke would have ruled the college basketball had he been a coach in today's time.

we snuck into a practice once as students. To say he coached them hard was an understatement. He had worked with Bobby Knight before jpining CLemson so draw your own conclusions.

To clarify Bobby was an assistant coach for Tates at Army

There’s chapter in the book devoted to our efforts to recruit Moses Malone. It was a real bidding war. In the end nobody got him since he turned pro out of high school.

There are quite a few coaches that were investigated, fired, etc. for doing things that are legal now. Bruce Pearl is a perfect example.

His competitive advantage ($$$) would no longer be an advantage for him.

Unless you think he was a great recruiter and/or coach otherwise, I don't see how he would be expected to do better, or even as well, now that everyone is allowed to entice players with money.

Yeah but he had that hard-nosed, hard work disciplinarian style

that works for basketball coaches. He was Bobby Knight's mentor and Bobby Knight was Coach K's mentor. That style and not caring if players and people dislike you works for coaches like them and Bruce Pearl.

Works for football coaches too - Danny Ford played and was an assistant under Bear Bryant. Players hated Ford's practices at Clemson.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I think he would have done quite well. He made Clemson competitive in an era when ACC basketball was truly king. NC State stoppped UCLA's reign for example. I am not naive enough to think UNC, Duke, Maryland, and NC State were not also buying players back then. It's the old Lance Armstrong argument. "He's cheater and could not have done what he did without cheating." Turns out they were all cheating so doesn't that mean he is still great because he beat them on a level field?

Didn't we have Phil Ford Locked up (pun) until UNC stole him from us?

But there was probably nothing shady there on UNC's part (sarcasm) since they weren't cheating for decades since the NCAA dropped the case against them because the lawyers kept dragging it out.

UNCheat was cheating long before their more recent scandal...they were put on

probably similar to the SMU allegations prior to their death penalty. They were the scapegoat in a wild Wild West scenario where everyone cheated.

its a fascinating story, the Monte Carlos always made me laugh. and I think it was BC innabet (spelling) who basically funded the whole thing. It seems cheating was rampant, but we got busted.

The chapter on Moses Malone was epic

I will just refer to what Tates about playing Lefty and the Terps. "Get me to last 2 minutes even and I will outcoach that sob." Tates was a character and a heck of a coach and coaches can win in any situation.

He could teach the game, but

in this era of 3's and layups, would he even be interested in coaching?

He wasn't doing ANYTHING that wasn't going on at UNC, NCState, Carolina, you

name it. They all got scared when they saw what Skip Wise and Tree Rollins could do to their chances of being the only team from the ACC to go to the NCAA tournament.
What he did was wrong. But to sit by and watch other teams get away with the same crap is unconscionable.

In my humble opinion, Skip Wise was unquestionably the best Basketball player EVER to wear a Clemson uniform. The tobacco road teams as well as South Carolina, all were drooling over Wise
