But otherwise, the article was very complimentary.

It says a generation ago. I'm sure he's talking 80s, and he's right.

Its meant to imply that this current run is all good, no controversy. Great article.

Recruiting violations in the 1980s led to penalties.

Since then Clemson's main consideration in hiring a head coach has been integrity. It appeared we didn't care about winning. Some of the old guys, your's truly, saw it happen. One after one they came and left but all were men who were honest and faithful to NCAA rules. For nearly three decades we suffered integrity and settled for cleanliness over victory.
Finally, God put Clemson and Dabo in the same place and worked all things to our good. Perhaps some would call it Karma, some just blind luck and some faith. Whatever you call it we landed a coach who cares more about God, his family which includes our players and treats them like they are his own sons. He cares about that which is important more than winning and somebody, maybe the universe rewarded him for his work.

Then you must be young and don't remember how we spent the 80's winning games and seemed like constantly under investigation. In retrospect it was probably a good thing Florida took Charley Pell from us or we might have wound up like SMU. UF hired Charley Pell and told him to build them an winning program any way he could. He did just what they asked and the next thing you knew they were on probation and Charley was out the door.
What was it, three years with no bowl or TV for Clemson. NCAA said two but the ACC said three. But we did get to watch every game on ESPN at midnight during those years. Just couldn't be live TV.

I know all about the penalty in the early 80's from Pell, but that was over 30 years ago. How does one penalty for three years equate to "constant NCAA jail"?

Not sure what you were reading, but this opening paragraph is some of the best crow-eating I've seen from ESPN (or any other SEC-related machine): "Wow, talk about your typos. We're a little sheepish here at College Football Experts, Inc. It turns out that our season-long discussion about whether the best team this season belonged among the best teams in history focused on the wrong team. Editors: Please replace three months' worth of "Alabama" with "Clemson."

I hear you; after reading it again, I was probably reading too much into that NCAA jail comment.

very good article, correctly said ncaa jail " a generation ago".
"The Tigers excelled in all three phases of the game. They would have excelled in a fourth phase, if one existed"
" Imitation is the sincerest form of beating your alma mater by four touchdowns."
"delivered the ultimate insult of a 10-minute, non-scoring drive to end the game. Good manners stopped the Tigers when the Tide couldn't."

What a huge quote!! Love it!
And, writer says "generation ago" not "decade ago." Big diff.
