That’s why NFL is sponsoring flag football leagues and playing flag football at pro bowl They easing us in like the frog in hot water analogy. Through him in boiling water all of a sudden and he will jump out. Put him in and heat him up slowly and he will lay in there and get cooked

It’s football. People get hurt. How many players you think go to make a tackle and say Hey this situation calls for the old hip drop tackle. It’s just a natural football move

Even the NFL players association was against this rule but sure, let’s try to find a way to make this political. 🤡

And his perception of their political stances, so does this particular paper, it aint a coincidence that he linked a story from them.
The NFL players association should be for anything that helps keep its constituents safe I’d be curious to see how the opinions of players breaks defensive players vs offensive.

IF an offensive player is allowed to push on a defensive players facemask, then tackling by the hip should be allowed. There is already rules for going low and high on players.... now we are limiting tackling by the middle? Just kill the sport and go flag football. Heck, basketball will be more contact sport than football.

It’s a good rule. Enforcing it consistently will be a problem for the officials (and give whiney fans more to complain about).

It’s the ‘swivel’ portion that the nfl wants to eliminate (which causes the defender to land on the back legs).
No clue how they’re going to enforce this consistently unless it’s an obvious injury.

Not sure how this works... If broken down, the defender will inevitably be

to the side of the offensive player since the offensive guy is usually trying to go around the defender. As the offensive guy is passing the defender, the defender grabs on to anything he can and tries to go down as soon as possible with the ball carrier . In the nano second that the guy with the ball is wrapped and still moving forward, the defender ends up behind the ball carrier, with arms around waste with feet dragging.. Thus, a hip drop happens.
I obviously am not understanding something here...

May be eliminate all contact during football. Football has tackled this way for many years. Why decide to eliminate it now? Players get hurt in all sports and all the rules in the world will not eliminate that.

The illegal part is not the hip drop it's the pinning of the offensive players leg. Tackling is tackling and some DBs and LBs have developed a technique that has them basically landing all they're weight on the back of a players leg and pinning the leg from the knee down underneath them. This causes serious career ending knee and foot injuries.

After reading all of the comments I have come to the following conclusion. A lot of you have never played football. I can see this now. A 4.3 RB breaks the line of scrimmage and a 4.4 LB is approaching rapidly at a 45 degree angle, suddenly the LB pulls up and pulls a rule book out of his jock, turns to page 18, par A, sub par 2B and quickly looks for the proper position he must maintain during the tackle to prevent a hip drop tackle. In the meantime the RB just scored on a 55 yd. run.

I was taught to drive the player to the ground. Not piggy back rides where you put all your weight on the runners back legs.

other contact already. Stop pussyfooting around with these yearly "tweaks" to the football rules and just get on to your ultimate goal of turning the NFL into a no-pads flag-football league where the offenses score 100+ points.

I know FSU fans are looking at this because Jordan Travis was injured by a "hip drop tackle." But, I don't understand exactly what that is and how it can be prevented.
I thought I was confused on targeting. Now, I can really get confused on replays where officials are trying to decide if this tackle was a hip drop or not.
At least it appears that you can't target and hip drop at the same time.
