South Carolina Highway 46 is a 17.33-mile-long state highway in Jasper and Beaufort counties in the southeastern corner of the state that runs from the west end at US 321 in Hardeeville to the east end at US 278 in Bluffton.

Bluffton, nicknamed Old Town, is a rapidly growing town of 34,000 in Beaufort County, South Carolina, the 17th largest in the state. The town is on the May River just off of US 278 between Hilton Head Island and I-95. In the 1840s, wealthy merchants and plantation owners made Bluffton a prime political spot when the Bluffton Movement of 1844 protested an increased tariff and pushed for state's rights which fueled the secession sentiment in the state. The area also had a relationship with the Yamassee people that influenced growth of cotton, corn, and indigo. For the average Blufftonite or visitor, Brighton Beach on the May River is basically a beach, boat access, and parking lot. For the richer, Hilton Head 7 miles away is a resort island with beaches and golf courses that attract millions of visitors and dollars.

46 - Eric Mac Lain played in 46 Clemson Victories

While at Clemson:

“Eric Mac Lain

A Hope Mill, N.C., native, Mac Lain played at Clemson 2011-15, where the Tigers captured two conference championships and made a national championship appearance. He obtained the most wins (46) by a single player in Clemson history, while earning Strength and Conditioning All America honors. As a student, Mac Lain was an All-ACC Academic Football Team selection and was graduated with a bachelor’s in health science (2015) and a master’s in athletic leadership and administration (2017).”

https://theacc.com/news/2019/4/6/former-clemson-star-eric-mac-lain-joins-acc-network-as-football-studio-analyst.aspx

According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“Mac Lain is known for his work ethic, has sacrificed immensely for his team and cares deeply about Clemson and the surrounding community.

He is known as “Mr. Clemson,” and for reasons that are far bigger than football.

Mac Lain stepped on campus in the summer of 2011 as one of the nation’s most heavily recruited tight ends. However, he did not play right away as some had expected. After redshirting as a freshman, Mac Lain saw a need for more bodies on the offensive line and asked head coach Dabo Swinney if he could transition to the offensive line. The transition was anything but easy.

“Making that transition was extremely difficult,” admitted Mac Lain. “It was a two or three-year process, and now I’m finally seeing the fruits of my labor.”

https://clemsontigers.com/service-sacrifice-hard-work/

While he was a student athlete at Clemson, ClemsonTigers.com reported on his desire to give back

“Mac Lain has made community service a priority during his career at Clemson. He has spoken at numerous local schools, participated in Habitat for Humanity, visited children in hospitals, volunteered with local Boy Scouts and participated in South Carolina’s “Welcome Home Troops” program. He compiled more community service hours than any other Clemson football player during the 2014-15 academic year.

He earned a Top Six Award from the ACC for community service as well as a Jerry Richardson Community MVP Award. Mac Lain’s efforts in the community have also been recognized nationally, as he was nominated to the AFCA All-Good Works Team in the preseason.

Along with Allen, Mac Lain’s parents and family also encouraged him from a young age to give back to his community.

“Giving back is something that’s been instilled in me by my parents since I was young. They always reminded me to try to leave a place better than I found it. Otherwise, I didn’t do my job.”

As a player whose career has been defined by service, sacrifice and hard work, Mac Lain hopes to give back to a university and football program that has given him so much.

“I want to be remembered as a passionate guy who loves Clemson with all his heart. This school has given me so many opportunities and so much joy and happiness, and I hope when people see me play, I show that.”

https://clemsontigers.com/service-sacrifice-hard-work/

After Clemson:

Eric Mac Clain has served as an ACC media personality with ESPN and the ACC Network. TheACC.com reported his hiring in April 2019:

CLEMSON, S.C. - Clemson Tigers fans will see former offensive guard, team captain and first-team All-ACC selection Eric Mac Lain on ACC Network (ACCN) Fridays and Saturdays in the fall. He will contribute to studio coverage with analysis of the conference’s season-long football action. ACCN is the new, 24/7 national platform that will launch on August 22, 2019. One week later, Clemson will kick off ACCN’s football slate on August 29 when it hosts Georgia Tech in the season-opening game for both teams.

Mac Lain said, “It was a privilege to play at Clemson and compete in the ACC, and I’m blessed to now have this opportunity to cover football as part of ACCN. I look forward to being a part of the ACCN family while helping to bring an unprecedented amount of content and events to our fans.”

https://theacc.com/news/2019/4/6/former-clemson-star-eric-mac-lain-joins-acc-network-as-football-studio-analyst.aspx

ClemsonTigers.com also described Mac Clain’s strong faith in Christ:

Mac Lain also is a man of deep faith and knows that his purpose in life is much greater than winning football games on Saturdays.

“Ultimately, I want people to see the Lord’s light shining through me. Scripture tells us to be a beacon of light in such a dark place, and hopefully when people see me play, they can see that light shining.”

46 - Cincinnati Bengals Pick Jackson Carman with Pick 46 of 2021 NFL Draft

Clemson OL Jackson Carman (2018-2020) was a very highly rated 2018 recruit out of Fairfield, Ohio (just outside of Cincinnati). Ohio St pushed hard for Carman right up until he signed with Clemson.

While at Clemson:

How sweet it must have been for Carman when he and Clemson played against Ohio St in the Fiesta in the CFP playoff. As shown in his bio (below): Carman “earned an AP All-Bowl selection for his role in limiting Ohio State’s Chase Young in that game.”

Some key select excerpts from Carman’s bio on ClemsonTigers.com provides the following:

Declared for the NFL Draft after playing 1,934 snaps over 40 career games (27 starts) from 2018-20 … started each of the last 27 games of his career … helped lead Clemson to ACC titles and College Football Playoff berths in all three seasons.

2020: Started all 12 games at left tackle, playing 793 snaps as Clemson led the ACC as the only team to allow fewer than two sacks per game … second-team All-American according to CBS Sports … second-team All-ACC honoree who was also named second-team all-conference by the AP

2019: Third-team All-ACC selection … played 798 snaps over 15 games (all starts) helping Clemson finish fourth in the nation in points per game (43.9) and fifth in total offense (school-record 528.7 yards per game) … made first career start and played 44 snaps vs. Georgia Tech in helping Clemson to its most rushing yards (411) in a season opener since 1957

played 46 snaps as Clemson rolled up 600 yards of offense vs. No. 22 Virginia en route to a fifth straight ACC Championship … played 68 snaps as Clemson produced the fifth-largest comeback in school history, overcoming a 16-0 deficit in a Fiesta Bowl win vs. No. 2 Ohio State … earned an AP All-Bowl selection for his role in limiting Ohio State’s Chase Young in that game … played 71 snaps vs. No. 1 LSU … ACC Honor Roll selection.

2018: Played 209 snaps over 13 games … played 18 snaps in collegiate debut vs. Furman

played eight snaps against Pitt and 10 snaps against No. 3 Notre Dame … played four snaps in National Championship Game vs. No. 1 Alabama.

After Clemson:

Jackson Carman returned to his former stomping grounds for his NFL career. The Cincinnati Bengals selected Jackson Carman with the 46th Pick (2nd Round) of the 2021 NFL Draft. According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, Carman has played in 22 games in his three NFL seasons with the Bengals.

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/C/CarmJa00.htm

In 2022, he played in the Super Bowl with the Bengals. As reported by Sports Illustrated in February 2022:

This time last year, draft experts wondered if Jackson Carman will be a tackle or guard in the NFL. Flash forward to a year later, and the former Clemson offensive lineman will be playing for his childhood team in the Super Bowl.

Carman played a big role in Sunday’s AFC Championship win over the Kansas City Chiefs, sending the Cincinnati Bengals to Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles. It was Carman’s block that sparked the Bengals’ comeback from 18 points down for a 27-24 overtime victory.

“Words can’t describe it. This is a chance of a lifetime,” Carman said to reporters after the game.
